Book Critter Capers

Download or read book Critter Capers written by Lee Wittek and published by Bbm Press. This book was released on 2002-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tales from the Dog-catcher who captures your heart. A "must read" for anyone with an interest in animals of any kind. Critter Capers offers a collection of short stories and gentle humour easily shared and enjoyed by a broad range of age groups, from early teens to adult. Over his 2+ decades as an Animal Control Officer Wittek's "career leap" was anything but dull, with duties ranging from the simple collection and adoption of stray and abandoned pets, to the rescue of animals whose curiosity and lapse in judgement trapped or otherwise jeopardised their safety. In Western Nevada, due to its often rural nature, animal control also includes dealing with a variety of wildlife -- the occasional bear, cougar, or deer--that try to choose city life over their native mountains and foothills. With the humour and compassion that made Wittek an outstanding animal advocate, Critter Capers shares with readers many of the adventures and misadventures that he encountered on a day-to-day basis.

Book The Myth of Colorblindness

Download or read book The Myth of Colorblindness written by Sarah E. Turner and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-28 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores representations of race and ethnicity in contemporary cinema and the ways in which these depictions all too often promulgate an important racial ideology: the myth of colorblindness. Colorblindness is a discursive framework employed by mainstream, neoliberal media to celebrate a multicultural society while simultaneously disregarding its systemic and institutionalized racism. This collection is unique in its examination of such films as Ex Machina, The Lone Ranger, The Blind Side, Zootopia, The Fast and the Furious franchise, and Dope, which celebrate the myth of colorblindness, yet perpetuate and entrench the racism and racial inequities that persist in contemporary society. While the #OscarsSoWhite movement has been essential to bringing about structural changes to media industries and offers the opportunity for a wide diversity of voices to alter and transform the dominant, colorblind narratives continue to proliferate. As this book demonstrates, Hollywood still has a long way to go.

Download or read book Hollywood or History written by Sarah J. Kaka and published by IAP. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rationale for the present text, Hollywood or History? An Inquiry-Based Strategy for Using Film to Teach About Inequality and Inequity Throughout History stems from two main things. First and foremost is the fact that the reviews of the first two volumes in the Hollywood or History? series have been overwhelmingly positive, especially as it pertains to the application of the strategy for practitioners. Classroom utility and teacher practice have continued to be the primary objectives in developing the Hollywood or History? strategy. The second thing is that this most recent volume in the series takes it in a new direction--rather than focusing on eras in history, it focuses on the themes of inequity and inequality throughout history, and how teachers can utilize the Hollywood or History? strategy to tackle some of the more complicated content throughout history that many teachers tend to shy away from. There is a firm belief that students’ connection to film, along with teachers’ ability to use film in an effective manner, will help alleviate some of the challenges of teaching challenging topics such as inequity and inequality in terms of gender, race, socioeconomic status, and so much more. The book provides 30 secondary lesson plans (grades 6-12) that address nine different topics centered around inequity and inequality throughout history, many of which connect students to the world we are living in today. The intended audience for the book are teachers who teach social studies at the 6th-12th grade level both in the United States and other countries. An additional audience will be college and university social studies/history methods professors in the United States and worldwide.
