Présentés pour la première fois en français dans une traduction intégrale, ces textes n'ont rien perdu de leur acuité ni de leur à propos. Vers 1910, Max Weber rédige dix textes qui font voler en éclats la conception alors dominante de la communauté, aujourd'hui encore ardemment controversée. Un siècle plus tard, la présente traduction de ces écrits (pour partie inédits en français) s'appuie sur le volume des Communautés de l'édition critique allemande, qui, depuis 1984, réorganise et éclaire l'ensemble de l'œuvre protéiforme de Weber. Loin de toute essentialisation de la communauté, de tout déterminisme mécanique, les analyses qui se déploient ici s'appuient sur la démarche sociologique que Weber est en train de fonder, pour interroger ce qui est en jeu dans les processus de " communautisation ". C'est la complexité des synergies communautaires, la pluralité et l'intrication de facteurs économiques, historiques, religieux, militaires, juridiques ou culturels qui apparaissent ici en pleine lumière. Une objectivité scientifique, un savoir historique et ethnologique d'une ampleur exceptionnelle viennent ainsi s'opposer à des " visions du monde " souvent irrationnelles, portant, entre autres, sur l'origine de la famille, les peuples " primitifs ", les races, les castes, les clans, les classes, la nation ou l'État. La publication de ces textes sous forme d'un volume distinct permet de les inscrire dans une histoire des notions de communauté, d'identité et de commun, et ainsi d'éclairer certains enjeux fondamentaux du vocabulaire politique de notre époque.
