Book Knowledge and Commitment

Download or read book Knowledge and Commitment written by Douwe W. Fokkema and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2000-04-15 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors present a new perspective on a wide range of issues in the study of literature and culture. Some of the topics discussed, such as interpretation, canon formation, and literary historiography, belong to the traditional domain of literary studies. Others — cultural identity, convention, systems theory, and empirical methods — originate in the social sciences and are now being integrated into the humanities. By referring to the work of authors as widely apart as Hayden White, Edward Said, Fredric Jameson, Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Reinhart Koselleck, Pierre Bourdieu, Niklas Luhmann, Siegfried Schmidt, Norbert Groeben, and many others, the full complexity of the field of literary studies becomes apparent. The authors argue for a distinction between analysis of literary systems on the one hand and critical intervention on the other. By distinguishing between research and criticism, between knowledge and commitment, they offer new ways for literary studies as well as for cultural critique.

Book Critical Care Nurses Perceived Leadership Practices Organizational Commitment and Job Satisfaction

Download or read book Critical Care Nurses Perceived Leadership Practices Organizational Commitment and Job Satisfaction written by Ngozi I. Moneke and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-12-28 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My writing of this book has evolved over the past thirty-six years of professional nursing practice. These were my first efforts as an author, which were published in 2013: Promoting a Culture of Safety: Preventing Central Line Infections in Weill Cornell Medical Center, which used a performance improvement process to lower the rate at which critically ill patients in cardiac care developed central line infections, and Factors Influencing Critical Nurses' Perception of their Overall Job Satisfaction: An Empirical Study, which used a correctional approach and was statistically analyzed to determine the perception of critical-care nurses of their manager's leadership style and its effect on their job satisfaction. Having been on the receiving end of leadership behaviors gave me a firsthand opportunity to observe these diverse nurse leaders at both extremes of the spectrumfrom laissez-faire leadership style to dictatorial leadership style and everything in between. Each encounter has enriched my life immeasurably. My personal and professional experiences, as well as the knowledge I gained from completing my dissertation, all compelled me to write this bookto share with novice managers and those aspiring for a leadership role an awareness and provide them with some valuable information needed as they forge their career paths into a leadership role, knowing that one of the keys to effective leadership is the ability to stay intellectually curious and committed to learning with the understanding that new knowledge can come from variety of sources and to make it a point of duty to be always on a lookout for new knowledge.

Book Teaching Controversial Issues

Download or read book Teaching Controversial Issues written by Nel Noddings and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, eminent educational philosopher Nel Noddings and daughter Laurie Brooks explain how teachers can foster critical thinking through the exploration of controversial issues. The emphasis is on the use of critical thinking to understand and collaborate, not simply to win arguments. The authors describe how critical thinking that encourages dialogue across the school disciplines and across social/economic classes prepares students for participation in democracy. They offer specific, concrete strategies for addressing a variety of issues related to authority, religion, gender, race, media, sports, entertainment, class and poverty, capitalism and socialism, and equality and justice. The goal is to develop individuals who can examine their own beliefs, those of their own and other groups, and those of their nation, and can do so with respect and understanding for others values. Book Features: Underscores the necessity of moral commitment in the use of critical thinking. Offers assistance for handling controversial issues that many teachers find unsettling. Proposes a way for students and teachers to work together across the disciplines. “Brooks and Noddings offer a timely and inspirational guide for teaching critical thinking in American schools. With deep roots in American philosophy and traditions, this book inspires us to teach students to question authority while fostering meaningful conversations about the difficult issues confronting our nation. This book offers a recipe for nurturing the next generation of caring and critical democratic citizens.” —Andrew Fiala, professor, California State University, Fresno “Chock-full of contemporary and historical examples, this book offers educators myriad examples of how to help students learn to talk with and listen to others and to understand the fullness of our collective humanity.” —Suzanne M. Wilson, University of Connecticut

Book excerpt: The long-awaited follow-up to the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Sympathizer, which has sold more than one million copies worldwide, The Committed follows the man of two minds as he arrives in Paris in the early 1980s with his blood brother Bon. The pair try to overcome their pasts and ensure their futures by engaging in capitalism in one of its purest forms: drug dealing. Traumatized by his reeducation at the hands of his former best friend, Man, and struggling to assimilate into French culture, the Sympathizer finds Paris both seductive and disturbing. As he falls in with a group of left-wing intellectuals whom he meets at dinner parties given by his French Vietnamese “aunt,” he finds stimulation for his mind but also customers for his narcotic merchandise. But the new life he is making has perils he has not foreseen, whether the self-torture of addiction, the authoritarianism of a state locked in a colonial mindset, or the seeming paradox of how to reunite his two closest friends whose worldviews put them in absolute opposition. The Sympathizer will need all his wits, resourcefulness, and moral flexibility if he is to prevail. Both highly suspenseful and existential, The Committed is a blistering portrayal of commitment and betrayal that will cement Viet Thanh Nguyen’s position in the firmament of American letters.
