It raises critical questions about logic by examining various ways in which logic may be entangled with mathematics and metaphysics. Is logic topic-neutral and general? Can we take the application of logic for granted? This book suggests that we should not be dogmatic about logic but ask similar critical questions about logic as those Kant raised about metaphysics and mathematics. It challenges the Fregean logic-first view according to which logic is fundamental and hence independent of any extra-logical considerations. Whereas Quine assimilated logic and mathematics to the theoretical parts of empirical science, the present volume explores views that stop short of his thoroughgoing holism but instead take logic to be answerable to or entangled with some particular disciplines. The contributions provide views that assign primacy to mathematical reasons, Kantian metaphysical grounds, Husserlian transcendental phenomenological reflection, or normative considerations about how terms ought to be defined in various fields of empirical science or mathematics. Space is thereby carved out between a Fregean position on the one hand and Quinean holism on the other. Critical Views of Logic will be a key resource for academics, researchers, and advanced students of philosophy, linguistics, mathematics, and computer science, as well as those engaged in various fields of empirical science. The chapters in this book, except for chapter 4, were originally published in the journal Inquiry.

Strangely enough, in view of all that he has said, his critique of logic has not been singled out as the subject of any of the longer, more detailed studies on the various aspects of his thought.

In the winter term of 1925/26, Martin Heidegger gave a four-hour lecture on logic in Marburg a. L., in which he deviated from his original plan as the work progressed. Heidegger analysed the contemporary state of logic, focusing in particular on Husserl's "Logical Investigations" and Husserl's opposition to psychologism. The second part discussed the question of truth in the context of the analysis of Being, with an emphasis on the theme of time, including an interpretation of Kant's "Critique of Pure Reason". This work formed the core of his later work "Kant and the Problem of Metaphysics", with more detailed individual analyses. Addressing the concept of truth within the framework of phenomenological and existential philosophy, Heidegger presents a sophisticated investigation into the nature and essence of truth. The focus of the paper is not merely to answer what truth is in the conventional sense, but to probe deeper into the existential and phenomenological aspects of truth, questioning its very foundation and nature in human understanding and experience. Kant sparked a metaphysical revolution which he understands as akin to the Copernican revolution. The question of how the iterations of the transcendent 'I' through time and space can 'know' anything (make synthetic a priori judgments) with any level of certainty takes the proscenium in the Critique. David Hume's fundamental error in Kant's view is that he assumes a Rationality which is Techne without Telos, a description only of what is, not what should be. To this end, he uses a Greek conception of Rationality as logos within a Platonic Ontology, splitting reality into two subdivisions between form and sense- perception, between Numinal and a phenomenological world. As physics is pure science, metaphysics is pure philosophy; "Pure knowledge of reason from mere concepts is called pure philosophy, or metaphysics... Metaphysics, then, both of nature and of morals, and especially the critique of reason venturing out on its own wings, which precedes it in a propaedeutic way, are actually the only things that we can call philosophy in the true sense of the word".
