Book Good Reasons for Better Arguments

Download or read book Good Reasons for Better Arguments written by Jerome E. Bickenbach and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 1996-09-19 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text introduces university students to the philosophical ethos of critical thinking, as well as to the essential skills required to practice it. The authors believe that Critical Thinking should engage students with issues of broader philosophical interest while they develop their skills in reasoning and argumentation. The text is informed throughout by philosophical theory concerning argument and communication—from Aristotle’s recognition of the importance of evaluating argument in terms of its purpose to Habermas’s developing of the concept of communicative rationality. The authors’ treatment of the topic is also sensitive to the importance of language and of situation in shaping arguments, and to the necessity in argument of some interplay between reason and emotion. Unlike many other texts in this area, then, Good Reasons for Better Arguments helps to explain both why argument is important and how the social role of argument plays an important part in determining what counts as a good argument. If this text is distinctive in the extent to which it deals with the theory and the values of critical thinking, it is also noteworthy for the thorough grounding it provides in the skills of deductive and inductive reasoning; the authors present the reader with useful tools for the interpretation, evaluation and construction of arguments. A particular feature is the inclusion of a wide range of exercises, rich with examples that illuminate the practice of argument for the student. Many of the exercises are self testing, with answers provided at the back of the text; others are appropriate for in-class discussion and assignments. Challenging yet accessible, Good Reasons for Better Arguments brings a fresh perspective to an essential subject.

Book Recovering Argument

Download or read book Recovering Argument written by Richard E. Mezo and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 1999-08 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recovering Argument is a textbook or handbook that sounds a revolutionary call to teachers and students of rhetoric, asking, as it implicitly does, for a return to reason as the basis of all argument. The implied purpose of the book is to recover argument from its current status among teachers, who often view composition as a merely personal exercise, with an emphasis upon "invention" (now the most important part of so-called "process" writing). It attempts to provide a framework for understanding discourse and its position and function in a democratic society. In addition to calling for a return to reason, Recovering Argument suggests new models and approaches to the teaching of writing. A model of communication (a "humanistic" model) is offered as a replacement for the widely-accepted analogy that would turn writer and audience into radio transmitters and receivers. A new treatment of "audience" clearly and succinctly demonstrates that the writer does not need to be a slave to demographics, but rather that the writer of any argument must search for truth, however unpalatable that truth may be to the audience. A much-needed review of the differences between spoken and written language is provided herein, and the reader is shown the placement of argument within the Western rhetorical tradition and the importance of the continuing dialogue that began with Plato and Aristotle. This brief text could be used in a college or upper-level high school course in rhetoric or writing as a supplementary text or as the core text in addition to supplementary readings. The freshness of the material is sure to stimulate thought and discussion. The examples of argument in the appendix provide a foundation for individual response and for further study.

Download or read book Critical Thinking written by Timo Ter Berg and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-08-08 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is part of an effective, evidence based method to teach critical thinking and essay writing skills: Critical Thinking with Rationale. This distinctive method was developed at the University of Melbourne in the beginning of this century through 5 years of research and is used now by thousands of students worldwide. This method emphasises deliberate practice of reasoning skills by argument mapping, a technique to visualise the underlying logical structure of argumentation. Empirical evidence suggests that practice with argument mapping results in improved critical thinking skills. Rationale - available in English, Spanish, Dutch, German - is an online program at ReasoningLab.com that enables students to structure their thinking and writing by organizing information and making argument maps (individually or simultaneously together) and export them as text. As such, Rationale is especially developed for implementing critical thinking training in classroom environments. Rationale is used all over the world in different levels of education. Individual users can develop their critical thinking skills by using the Self Study Guide out of the book in combination with Rationale. This book focuses on the basic concepts of critical thinking, as they are used in this method.
