This book was released on 2017 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forgotten Places: Critical Studies in Rural Education critically investigates and informs the construction of the rural, rural identity and the understanding of the rural internationally. This book promotes and expands the notion of critical understandings of rural education, particularly in the areas of race, class, gender, and LGBTQ, with conceptualizations of social justice. While there have been many volumes written on critical issues in urban education, only a small number have been produced on rural education, and the majority of those are not critical. By contrast, Forgotten Places not only discusses "schools in the country," but also expands conceptualizations of the rural beyond schools and place as well as beyond the borders of the United States. It also tackles the artificial duality between conceptualizations of urban and rural. Forgotten Places includes scholarly investigations into the connections among the symbolic order, various forms of cultural artifacts and multiple readings of these artifacts within the context of critical/transformational pedagogy. This book fills a significant gap in the scholarly work on the ramifications of the rural.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Writers, Vol. 2: Biographical and Critical Studies The death of Prof. Baskervill, September 6, 1899, cut short a career that had already accomplished much and promised more. His technical scholarship was recognized by his colleagues in English throughout the United States; his teaching quality attested by students who had been resorting to him in increasing numbers for more than twenty years; his power to please as well as instruct the general public evidenced by numerous calls to lecture at Chautauqua, in Colorado, at Monteagle, and elsewhere; and he was just finding his widest audience through his literary sketches and studies, and awakening in good judges the conviction that he was to be the historian of the intellectual movement called Southern Literature. William Malone Baskervill, son of Rev. John Baskervill and his wife, Elizabeth Malone, was born in Fayette County, Tenn., April 1, 1850. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Writers: Biographical and Critical Studies; Charles Egbert Craddock Murfreesboro, was in its day the most magnificent in that region. In this home was born, about 1850, a little girl to Whom her parents gave the name Mary N oailles, but whom most people will prefer to remember as Charles Egbert Craddock. In childhood a paralysis, which caused lameness for life, deprived her of all participation in the sports of children and set her bright and active mind to work to devise its own amusement and entertainment. Early sickness has more than once proved a blessing in disguise to the future writer of fiction by teaching him to train the observation, to live in good books, and to company with his fancies. It sent Scott to the country and to the fountains of leg end and story, strongly inclined Dickens to reading, and laid Haw thorne upon the carpet to study the long day through. In the same way the Tennessee girl early developed a marked fondness for works of ficchatles Egbert Graooock.
