Book Critical Stress of Thin walled Cylinders in Torsion

Download or read book Critical Stress of Thin walled Cylinders in Torsion written by S. B. Batdorf and published by . This book was released on 1947 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical solution is given of the critical stress of thin-walled cylinders loaded in torsion. The results are presented in terms of a few simple formulas and curves which are applicable to a wide range of cylinder dimensions from very short cylinders of large radius to long cylinders of small radius. Theoretical results are found to be in somewhat better agreement with experimental results than previous theoretical work for the same range of cylinder dimensions.

Book Critical Stress of Ring stiffened Cylinders in Torsion

Download or read book Critical Stress of Ring stiffened Cylinders in Torsion written by Manuel Stein and published by . This book was released on 1949 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nondimensional chart is presented for the theoretical critical stress in torsion of simply supported cylinders stiffened by identical, equally spaced, torsionally weak rings. The results are obtained by solving the equation of equilibrium by means of the Galerkin method. Comparison of the theoretical results wit hthe experimental results indicates that ring-stiffened cylinders buckle on the average, at a buckling stress about 15 percent below the theoretical buckling stress presented.

Book Critical Combinations of Torsion and Direct Axial Stress for Thin walled Cylinders

Download or read book Critical Combinations of Torsion and Direct Axial Stress for Thin walled Cylinders written by S. B. Batdorf and published by . This book was released on 1947 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical solution is presented for the determination of the combinations of direct axial stress and torsion which cause thin-walled cylinders with either simply supported or clamped edges to buckle. This theoretical solution is used in conjunction with available test data to develop empirical curves and formulas for use in design. Comparisons are made with theoretical and empirical solutions obtained in other investigations.

Book Critical stress of Thin walled Cylinders

Download or read book Critical stress of Thin walled Cylinders written by S. B. Batdorf and published by . This book was released on 1947 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empirical design curves are presented for the critical stress of thin-walled cylinders loaded in axial compression. These curves are plotted in terms of the nondimensional parameters of small-deflection theory and are compared with theoretical curves derived from buckling of cylinders with simply supported and clamped edges. An empirical equation is given for the buckling of cylinders having a length-radius ratio greater than about 0.75.

Book Mechanics of Optimal Structural Design

Download or read book Mechanics of Optimal Structural Design written by David W. A. Rees and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-12-21 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a global climate where engineers are increasingly under pressure to make the most of limited resources, there are huge potential financial and environmental benefits to be gained by designing for minimum weight. With Mechanics of Optimal Structural Design, David Rees brings the original approach of weight optimization to the existing structural design literature, providing a methodology for attaining minimum weight of a range of structures under their working loads. He addresses the current gap in education between formal structural design teaching at undergraduate level and the practical application of this knowledge in industry, describing the analytical techniques that students need to understand before applying computational techniques that can be easy to misuse without this grounding. Shows engineers how to approach structural design for minimum weight in clear, concise terms Contains many new least-weight design techniques, taking into consideration different manners of loading and including new topics that have not previously been considered within the least-weight theme Considers the demands for least-weight road, air and space vehicles for the future Enhanced by illustrative worked examples to enlighten the theory, exercises at the end of each chapter that enable application of the theory covered, and an accompanying website with worked examples and solutions housed at www.wiley.com/go/rees The least-weight analyses of basic structural elements ensure a spread of interest with many applications in mechanical, civil, aircraft and automobile engineering. Consequently, this book fills the gap between the basic material taught at undergraduate level and other approaches to optimum design, for example computer simulations and the finite element method.

Book Stability Of Structures Elastic Inelastic Fracture And Damage Theories

Download or read book Stability Of Structures Elastic Inelastic Fracture And Damage Theories written by Zdenek P Bazant and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010-08-16 with total page 1039 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A crucial element of structural and continuum mechanics, stability theory has limitless applications in civil, mechanical, aerospace, naval and nuclear engineering. This text of unparalleled scope presents a comprehensive exposition of the principles and applications of stability analysis. It has been proven as a text for introductory courses and various advanced courses for graduate students. It is also prized as an exhaustive reference for engineers and researchers. The authors' focus on understanding of the basic principles rather than excessive detailed solutions, and their treatment of each subject proceed from simple examples to general concepts and rigorous formulations. All the results are derived using as simple mathematics as possible. Numerous examples are given and 700 exercise problems help in attaining a firm grasp of this central aspect of solid mechanics. The book is an unabridged republication of the 1991 edition by Oxford University Press and the 2003 edition by Dover, updated with 18 pages of end notes.
