Book Critical Regimes of Two Phase Flows with a Polydisperse Solid Phase

Download or read book Critical Regimes of Two Phase Flows with a Polydisperse Solid Phase written by Eugene Barsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical regimes of two-phase flows with a polydisperse solid phase form the basis of such widespread industrial processes as separation of various powdery materials and minerals dressing. It is impossible to describe such complicated flows analytically. Therefore, this study concentrates on invariants experimentally revealed and theoretically grounded for such flows. This approach can be compared with the situation in gases, where in order to determine principal parameters of their state, one does not need to measure the kinetic energy and velocity of each molecule and find its contribution to the temperature and pressure. These parameters are determined in a simple way for the system on the whole. A novel conception of two-phase flows allowing the formulation of their statistical parameters is physically substantiated. On the basis of the invariants and these parameters, a comprehensive method of estimating and predicting mass transfer in such flows is developed. It is noteworthy that the presented results are mostly phenomenological. Such an approach can be successfully extended to the separation of liquids, gases and isotopes. The book is intended for students and specialists engaged in chemical technology, mineral dressing, ceramics, microelectronics, pharmacology, power generation, thermal engineering and other fields in which flows carrying solid particles are used in the technological process.

Book Gibbs Entropic Paradox and Problems of Separation Processes

Download or read book Gibbs Entropic Paradox and Problems of Separation Processes written by Eugene Barsky and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-03-22 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gibbs' Entropic Paradox and Problems of Separation Processes reviews the so-called Gibb’s Paradox observed during the mixing of two systems. During the last 150 years, many physicists and specialists in thermodynamics, statistical and quantum mechanics been engaged in the solution of the Gibbs paradox. Many books and journal articles have written on this topic, but a widely accepted answer is still lacking. In this book, the author reviews and analyzes all this data. Based on findings, the book formulates a different approach to this paradox and substantiates it on the basis of physical and statistical principles. The book clearly shows that entropy consists of two parts, static and dynamic. Up to now, entropy has been connected only with the process dynamics. However, the Gibbs paradox is caused by the change in the static component of entropy. Finally, the book includes examples of separation processes and how to optimize them in various fields, including biology, cosmology, crystallography and the social sciences. Provides a precise definition of entropy and allows the formulation of criteria for optimization of separation processes Explains the role of entropy in many processes, facilitating an in-depth analysis and understanding of complicated systems and processes Provides solutions to scientific and applied problems in various scientific disciplines related to separation processes Elucidates entropy’s role in many separation systems

Book Monodisperse Highly Ordered and Polydisperse Biobased Solid Foams

Download or read book Monodisperse Highly Ordered and Polydisperse Biobased Solid Foams written by Sébastien Andrieux and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-23 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the synthesis of chitosan-based solid foams using foam templating. Solid foams with pore sizes between a few micrometres and a few millimetres are widely used in a range of established and emerging applications, including filtration, catalysis, sound and thermal insulation, human protection, and tissue engineering. They are lightweight with large surface-to-volume ratios, and have excellent mechanical, acoustic, and thermal properties. However, most foaming processes are extremely complex, and there remains a lack of sound scientific understanding of—and therefore control over—the parameters that determine the properties of the material. One route towards tailor-made solid foams is liquid foam templating, where the liquid foam is generated first (with the desired structure) before being solidified into a solid foam with the desired structure. This book describes how liquid foam templating can be used to synthesise monodisperse solid foams as well as solid foams with a tuneable polydispersity.

Book Development Verification and Validation of Multiphase Models for Polydisperse Flows

Download or read book Development Verification and Validation of Multiphase Models for Polydisperse Flows written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes in detail the technical findings of the DOE Award entitled 'Development, Verification, and Validation of Multiphase Models for Polydisperse Flows.' The focus was on high-velocity, gas-solid flows with a range of particle sizes. A complete mathematical model was developed based on first principles and incorporated into MFIX. The solid-phase description took two forms: the Kinetic Theory of Granular Flows (KTGF) and Discrete Quadrature Method of Moments (DQMOM). The gas-solid drag law for polydisperse flows was developed over a range of flow conditions using Discrete Numerical Simulations (DNS). These models were verified via examination of a range of limiting cases and comparison with Discrete Element Method (DEM) data. Validation took the form of comparison with both DEM and experimental data. Experiments were conducted in three separate circulating fluidized beds (CFB's), with emphasis on the riser section. Measurements included bulk quantities like pressure drop and elutriation, as well as axial and radial measurements of bubble characteristics, cluster characteristics, solids flux, and differential pressure drops (axial only). Monodisperse systems were compared to their binary and continuous particle size distribution (PSD) counterparts. The continuous distributions examined included Gaussian, lognormal, and NETL-provided data for a coal gasifier.
