Book Thinking Outside the Box Incorporating Critical Thinking Strategies in ESL Reading Writing Instruction

Download or read book Thinking Outside the Box Incorporating Critical Thinking Strategies in ESL Reading Writing Instruction written by Johanna Carranza and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT ESL students in the United States avail the resources of community college to achieve their goal of academic excellence. However, many community colleges struggle to prepare their students for mainstream four-year institutions. Aside from reading, writing, and speaking, learning a second language requires the development of critical thinking skills which are not emphasized enough for many ESL students in contemporary American academia. As such, there are two major problems that this project aims to address. The first is that English as a Second Language (ESL) and English instructors have different expectations for ESL students. ESL instructors do not focus on the teaching and development of critical thinking skills. Many English instructors, however, expect all of their students to have critical thinking skills, which includes ESL students that may find themselves in transfer-level English courses. Because of this, many ESL students struggle in transfer-level English courses they must take to achieve academic excellence. This leads in to the second problem: ESL students do not have the necessary critical thinking skills they need to succeed in transfer-level English courses. The purpose of this project is to develop a handbook for ESL faculty to help ESL students by teaching and developing their critical thinking skills in Advanced ESL Reading and Writing courses to better prepare the students for transfer-level courses, as well as any other higher education courses they may encounter. The project is a pedagogical tool for ESL instructors at the community college level to utilize in the development of an Advanced ESL Reading and Writing course that emphasizes the teaching of critical thinking skills to ESL students. This handbook is centered around one course unit that consists of six lesson plans explored through the lens of human rights. It is also based on the combination of the Process Approach and TBSIR (topic, bridge, support, interpretation, return) to improve the writing skills of the students, while simultaneously developing their critical thinking skills.

Book Critical Thinking Instruction and Assessment

Download or read book Critical Thinking Instruction and Assessment written by Anna B. Merritt Brown and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The current study explores to what extent indirect or direct instruction in specific kinds of critical thinking affects the L2 writer's ability to analytically write. At the college level, second language speakers are expected to write according to the conventions of academic rhetoric; however, the primary investigator "experienced a concern" (McNiff and Whitehead in Nedved, 2005, p. 1) in her own language teaching when she noticed that many L2 students seemed at a loss when attempting to compose an analytic piece of writing. Because of their educational and cultural backgrounds, the primary investigator wondered if a more explicit approach in teaching critical thinking might be more beneficial than an explicit one. In an attempt to answer this question, a pre-existing course for L2 writers at Eastern Washington University was used in a two- part research project. In the first part, the primary investigator taught students how to write a comparison-contrast essay, an analytic type of writing that employs critical thinking, using an indirect teaching approach. The second part also involved teaching the comparison-contrast essay accept through a direct teaching approach. Results were gathered and analyzed by two raters, the primary investigator and the instructor of the students and is presented in this thesis. Though the evidence suggests that direct instruction has a positive outcome on student writing, other variables that could not be controlled for, reflections upon the methods employed, limitations of the study, and future research are also discussed"--Document.

Book Critical Reading Strategies in ESL

Download or read book Critical Reading Strategies in ESL written by Ainon Jariah Muhamad and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lack of critical reading skills, especially at tertiary level, is a great handicap to undergraduates, as they will find it difficult, or even unable to analyse and evaluate materials. The amount of reading students has to do and the endless exposure to all kinds of materials makes it crucial for them to be able to read effectively. This study examines whether the students were able to respond critically to reading texts given and if so, what the critical reading strategies employed were. The critical thinking skills of interpreting, analyzing, evaluating, explaining, inferring, and self-regulating (Facione, 2004) have been adopted as the analysis framework. The analysis should help shed some light on the relevance and the importance of the acquisition of the critical skills in academic reading. This book would be especially useful to policy makers, curriculum developers and also to anyone interested in making critical reading an agenda in the effort towards quality education and life-long learning.

Book Cognitive principles critical practice Reading literature at university

Download or read book Cognitive principles critical practice Reading literature at university written by Susanne Reichl and published by V&R Unipress. This book was released on 2009-09-16 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This enquiry into the principles and practice of reading literature brings together insights from cognitive studies, literary theory, empirical literature studies, learning and teaching research and higher education research. Reading is conceptualised as an active process of meaning-making that is determined by subjective as well as contextual factors and guided by a sense of purpose. This sense of purpose, part of a professional and conscious approach to reading, is the central element in the model of reading that this study proposes. As well as a conceptual aim, this model also has pedagogical power and serves as the basis for a number of critical and creative exercises geared towards developing literary reading strategies and strategic reading competences in general. These activities demonstrate how the main tenets of the study can be put into practice within the context of a particular institution of higher education.
