Drawing Louisiana's New Map reviews a restoration plan proposed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the State of Louisiana, finding that, although the individual projects in the study are scientifically sound, there should be more and larger scale projects that provide a comprehensive approach to addressing land loss over such a large area. More importantly, the study should be guided by a detailed map of the expected future landscape of coastal Louisiana that is developed from agreed upon goals for the region and the nation.

A significant cause for wetland loss in this region is relative sea-level rise produced by sediment-volume reduction. Dewatering, grain reorientation and packing, and oxidation of organic-rich sediments are thought to be the main processes for volume loss. It is argued that natural and anthropogenic causes for sediment degasification play a critical role in sediment-volume reduction. Between 1930 and 1990 the deltaic plain of the Mississippi River lost over 680,000 acres of land due to a complex suite of causes. Controversy and debate continues as to the causes of coastal land loss in Louisiana. Estimates, based on previous research, of the contribution of man to the land loss problem ranges between 10 percent and 90 percent. Different agencies and industries have been targeted as the primary cause of coastal land loss from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to the oil and gas industry. In many cases the role of natural processes and the multiple causality of the coastal land loss problem has been overlooked. In an effort to further our understanding and knowledge of the coastal land loss problem in Louisiana, the Gas Research Institute (GRI) sponsored a research project entitled Natural and Human Causes of Coastal Land Loss in Louisiana through the Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). By the twenty-first century the Louisiana Gulf Coast supplied nearly one-third of America's oil and gas, accounted for half of the country's refining capacity, and contributed billions of dollars to the U.S. economy. Today, thousands of miles of pipelines and related infrastructure link the state's coast to oil and gas consumers nationwide. During the course of this historic development, however, the dredging of pipeline canals accelerated coastal erosion. Currently, 80 percent of the United States' wetland loss occurs on Louisiana's coast despite the fact that the state is home to only 40 percent of the nation's wetland acreage, making evident the enormous unin-tended environmental cost associated with producing energy from the Gulf Coast. In American Energy, Imperiled Coast Jason P. Theriot explores the tension between oil and gas development and the land-loss crisis in Louisiana. His book offers an engaging analysis of both the impressive, albeit ecologically destructive, engineering feats that characterized industrial growth in the region and the mounting environmental problems that threaten south Louisiana's communities, culture, and "working" coast. In the past 50 years, more than 1,500 square miles have been lost. The wetlands contain 95% of all marine species in the Gulf of Mexico, 30% of the nation's fisheries, and one of the largest habitats in the world for migratory waterfowl. More than 25% of all oil and gas used in the United States originates or passes through these wetlands, which also serve as a buffer for hurricanes. The State of Louisiana asked ASCE to convene a summit to discuss technical aspects involved in carrying out restoration programs and to report on the insights that could be drawn from the summit. This report provides conclusions and recommendations concerning the technical topics discussed at the summit as well as the Task Committee's recommendations for a path forward.

This book describes coastal marshes in terms of form, function, ecology, wildlife value, and management. Robert H. Chabreck's emphasis is on the marshes of the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico (there are 5,500 square miles of marshland in Louisiana alone), but he also deals with marshes on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. Plant and animal communities are each given a chapter, and the book concludes with considerations of future uses and needs. The author provides references, a glossary, and a list of scientific names, along with numerous illustrations, including a section of color photographs. For thirty years, Robert H. Chabreck has been engaged in research and management of coastal marshes and has often served as a consultant in wetland ecology. He is a professor of wildlife at Louisiana State University.
