Anti-aging medicine presents aging as an unnatural and unnecessary process. It sees the aging body as a project for rejuvenation, inside and out, in order to maintain a youthful appearance. The discourses of critical gerontology view age as a natural and holistic process. This social science is driven by humanitarian underpinnings and includes a desire to understand the "inside" story of aging on an individual basis. In this thesis both sides of the issue will be explored. First, the development of anti-aging culture will be discussed in terms of population growth, retirement, the influence of beauty culture and types of anti-aging procedures. Second, the development of critical gerntological theory will be discussed in terms of biological aging, life span development theory, life course perspective and critical gerontology, including critical feminist gerontology, narrative gerontology and age studies. The goal of this thesis is to explore the cultural forces that determine the quality of people's age identities. Flaws in the culturally scripted stories of age will be identified and more realistic, individualized stories of age will be suggested. With the help of gerontological theory, a critical age autobiography can be written, one that encourages the emergence of a truer, more authentic, age identity.
