Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tolstoy on Shakespeare: A Critical Essay on Shakespeare Altho I know that the majority of people so firmly believe in the greatness of Shakespeare that in reading this judgment of mine they will not admit even the possibility of its justice, and will not give it the slightest attention, nevertheless I will endeavor, as well as I can, to show why I believe that Shakespeare can not be recognized either as a great genius, or even as an average author. For illustration of my purpose I will take one of Shakespeare's most extolled dramas, King Lear, in the enthusiastic praise of which, the majority of critics agree. Download or read book Critical Essays on the Plays of Shakespeare written by William Watkiss Lloyd and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical Essays on the Plays of Shakespeare In looking over Essays on the occasion of their proposed re-issue, I have found, and in some degree to my surprise, not alone how little I should now, now after the lapse of years, think necessary to add to them, but also how little they contain that I am prepared to revoke or should be anxious to modify. They reappear in consequence unaltered, and in all but secondary and trifling respects are still to be accepted as enunciations of my deliberate views. These, I am well aware, will often be found counter to some that are just now most audibly pronounced, and even, it may be, rather indulgently listened to; but I am quite content, without strengthening my positions, to let Time try these issues as it has already decided others. The Essays were originally written under circumstances that put laborious correction out of the question, and I believe that in a measure this was not entirely a disadvantage; they are certainly in consequence all the nearer to such an expression of an unforced but not on that account unstudied appreciation of the most truly national and popular of our poets, as it was my desire and only design to promulgate. I cannot do better, therefore, than repeat here words which I prefixed, some seventeen years since, to copies of a reprint for private circulation. Book Complete Works of William Shakespeare

Download or read book Complete Works of William Shakespeare written by William Shakespeare and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 1160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete Works of William Shakespeare: Edited, With a Critical Biography; With an Essay on the Chronology of Shakespeare Among the many critics of Shakespeare, few have been so generally accepted as belonging to the first class as Schlegel, whose Lectures on Dramatic Literature were, upon their delivery in Vienna, hailed throughout Europe with marked approbation. His introductions to the separate Plays of Shakespeare are both descriptive and critical, and put the reader in a position to enjoy the Plays, if read before them, or give him an entertaining epitome of them, if read after wards. F ew readers who have not specially studied the subject, are aware of the extent of Shakespeare's familiarity with the Bible, and his debt to it. The brief essay on that subject, with its accompanying quotations, gives suggestive help in reading the plays with this thought in view. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes, Criticism, and Correspondence Upon Shakespeare's Plays and Actors The sketches and essays which occupy the follow ing pages, necessarily partaking more or less of a personal character - the author so often Speaking of his own experience or observations - there would seem to be required no further preface at his hands. He cannot, however, neglect to avail himself of the time-honored privilege of saying a word to the reader, were it only to exchange the customary form of salu tation when meeting. For he would have his book regarded not as an elaborate attempt at authorship to which he makes no pretensions - but in the spirit of a familiar and friendly, yet earnest conversation, when one is listened to with partiality, as he discourses upon topics of admitted interest, or revises the traits of those whom the world has been accustomed to admire. Book excerpt: Examines all 39 of the most influential plays by Shakespeare, with an in-depth examination of each play's historical significance, literary technique, and contemporary alignment. The plays of William Shakespeare, from tragedies such as Hamlet to comedies such as A Midsummer Night's Dream, have endured since their first productions in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. A vital part of high school and college literature curricula today, these plays continue to educate and entertain, showing students - as well as the general populace - themes of humanity that have persevered throughout the ages, such as romantic love, greed, power, revenge, forgiveness, and many more. Written by leading experts in the field of Shakespearean studies, Critical Survey of Shakespeare's Plays closely examines all 39 of Shakespeare's plays, as well as Shakespeare's life, style, technique, and influences. This title begins with a biography of Shakespeare and an introduction to his plays as a whole, followed by close readings of individual plays. Each essay is devoted to a single work and provides an in-depth critical analysis of the play's historical significance, literary/dramatic techniques, and meaning to a contemporary audience. An abstract, explanation of context, and lists of keywords, works cited, and recommended books for further study also enhance each essay. The second half of the book focuses on various critical readings, analyzing Shakespeare's form, technique, and syntax, as well as main themes, motifs, and related topics. Also included are other resources useful to studying Shakespeare's plays, including a guide to free online sources and more literary criticism, a bibliography, a list of contributors, and a complete index. The essays in this single volume compile the essentials for any person interested in Shakespeare, whether a student approaching his works for the first time or a habitual theatergoer about to witness a new production of one of the plays. This title is a set of essays that record the history of Shakespeare the man, the dramatist, and the poet, and analyze each work attributed to his pen. With so much comprehensive analysis of Shakespeare's life and works, Critical Survey of Shakespeare's Plays is a must-have resource for high school and undergraduate literature departments, as well as public libraries who wish to support their literature collections.

This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Education, English Studies, and Shakespeare In the present stage of Shakespearian study, I suppose it would hardly do, even in a book designed for school use, to leave the matter of textual comment and textual correction altogether untouched. Accordingly there will be found, at the end of the play, a body of critical Norm, wherein I have drawn together whatever seemed necessary or desirable to be said in the way of textual criticism, and of comment on such particulars of textual correction as are here admitted. In doing this, I have almost unavoidably been led to note a few instances of different readings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes and Essays on Shakespeare Seeing our dearth of information about Shakespeare is so great, nothing that may be of the slightest value ought to be neglected; and so it may be worth while to consider what scenes and sights may have been familiar to him in his journeyings to and fro from Stratford to London. The transit can be accomplished now in four or five hours; but it was no such light matter in the Elizabethan age. The distance is some 100 miles (by Oxford 94), and probably under ordinary circumstances would occupy four or five days to traverse, though no doubt, under pressure, a less time might suffice. These periods would certainly form notable epochs in the poet's life. What a change from "the smoke and uproar and riches of Rome"! No doubt he would seldom travel alone. Perils from robbers were too common and too serious to encourage that practice. But yet he would often be lonely enough; and many a thought after wards embodied in immortal shape must have occurred to him during these long hours. Book Montaigne and Shakespeare

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montaigne and Shakespeare: And Other Essays on Cognate Questions This said, I leave for another time, or to other hands, the systematic discussion as to what is and is not genuine in the Shakespeare plays. That these problems must and will be grappled with, I am assured. The recent confident deliverance of Mr. C. F. Tucker Brooke, that all attempts to deprive the poet of a large interest in any of the thirty-six plays have failed,1 is only a suggestion to the effect that, despite such admirable critical work as Professor Bradley's, little contri bution to the undertaking from English academic sources is now to be looked for beyond the useful item of careful collation of texts. Our problems, however, must be handled in detail; and it is possible to isolate for the time being the general question of critical method, and that of a particular literary influence. Book Eighteenth Century Essays on Shakespeare Classic Reprint

Download or read book Eighteenth Century Essays on Shakespeare Classic Reprint written by David Nichol Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eighteenth Century Essays on Shakespeare This false attitude to the eighteenth century had its nemesis in the belief that we were awakened by foreigners to the greatness of Shakespeare. Even one so eminently sane as Hazlitt lent support to this opinion. We will confess, says the Preface to the Characters of Sfiakespeare's Plays, that some little jealousy of the character of the national understanding was not without its share in producing the following undertaking, for we were piqued that it should be reserved for a foreign critic to give reasons for the faith which we English have in Shakespeare; and the whole Preface resolves itself, however reluctantly, into praise of Schlegel and censure of Johnson. When a thorough Englishman writes thus, it, is not surprising that Germany should have claimed to be the first to give Shakespeare his true place. The heresy has been exposed; but even the slightest investi gation of eighteenth - century opinion, or the mere recollection of what Dryden had said, should have pre vented its rise. Though Hazlitt took upon himself the defence of the national intelligence, he incorporated in his Preface a long passage from Schlegel, because, in his opinion, no English critic had shown like enthusiasm or philosophical acuteness. We cannot regret the delusion if we owe to it the C/zaracters of Skatespeare's Plays, but his patriotic task would have been easier, and might even have appeared unnecessary, had he known that many of Schlegel's acute and enthusiastic observations had been anticipated at home. Book Shakespeare and His Critics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Shakespeare and His Critics Classic Reprint written by Charles F. Johnson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare and His Critics The critics of the eighteenth century were largely occupied with endeavors to establish a standard text by emendation and conjecture. Quite generally they looked at the plays from the standpoint of the theatre, ignor ing the idea that the tragedies were commentaries on human nature and possessed an absolute quality like truth or beauty. Dr. Johnson is typical of this class, if he is not too extreme an instance of common sense to be typical of that excellent quality. Though these critics rebelled rather timidly against slavish obedience to the authority of 'the ancients, ' the idea that the author was an untutored, natural genius, who would have been much improved by a university training, was not fully eradicated. The true nature of art was not philosophically grasped, and the profound relation of the plays to life was but dimly hinted at. The idea that the characters could be discussed exactly as if they were real, that they differed from historic characters in pos sessing more interesting personalities, in being placed in more complicated and trying situations, and, there fore, exemplifying more fully the passions of men, did not occur to the critics till very late in the eighteenth century. Nor was it discovered till towards the close of the eighteenth century that Shakespeare's female characters bear almost as close a relation to feminine nature as his heroes do to manly nature. In fact, both of these views may be said to belong to the romantic school of the nineteenth century. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of Shakespeare For some fifteen years I have conducted classes in the study of Shakespeare at the University of Indiana. I early found that great advantage was derived from an intimate knowledge of the social conditions that obtained at the time the plays were written. My attempt to furnish some assistance in this direction by the publication of an account of Shakespeare's London and of the people of Eliza beth's generation has given me confidence in the preparation of a handbook designed differently from many now in use. Though criticism of the plays forms the larger part of the following pages, I have had no intention of writing a volume of criticism. The book is not intended to be read on its independent merits, but in conjunction with a study of the texts. Though I hope it will be of interest to those already familiar with the plays of Shakespeare, it is primarily ad dressed to students.
