Book Nineteenth Century English Prose

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nineteenth Century English Prose: Critical Essays In preparing the present work the editors have restricted themselves to a single type of literary expression, - the critical essay. They have endeavored to trace, in a series of ten selected essays, the development of English criticism in the nineteenth century. In choosing the material they have been influenced by something more than mere style. An underlying coherence in content, typical of the thought of the era in question, may be traced throughout. The book is designed to furnish a series of essays covering a definite period and exhibiting the individuality in each author's method of criticism. The subject-matter in these selections provides interesting material for intensive study and class-room discussion, and each essay is an example of excellent, though varying, English style. It has not been the intention of the editors to place the different authors represented on the same level, either as critics or as stylists. Nor do they claim to have, necessarily, selected the best essay of each writer; they have sought, rather, to choose that one which appears to them to be most typical of the author's critical principles, and, at the same time, representative of the critical tendency of his age. Book Tradition and Tolerance in Nineteenth Century Fiction

Download or read book Tradition and Tolerance in Nineteenth Century Fiction written by David Howard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1966, this book collects six essays which discuss the experience of social change as it reveals itself in the work of several nineteenth century novelists. In the novels studied, and the discussion of fiction that follows, the authors argue that all these novelists’ attempts to confront social change — to connect old with new, past with present and the attempted inclusiveness of vision in a changing society — sooner or later fail. The essays are polemic in arguing against the contemporary critical consensus that this failure is a limitation of imaginative intelligence rather than an endorsement of a receding past which the process of change was charged with destroying.

Book Before the West Was West

Download or read book Before the West Was West written by Amy T. Hamilton and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the West Was West examines the extent to which scholars have engaged in-depth with pre-1800 “western” texts and asks what we mean by “western” American literature in the first place and when that designation originated. Calling into question the implicit temporal boundaries of the “American West” in literature, a literature often viewed as having commenced only at the beginning of the 1800s, Before the West Was West explores the concrete, meaningful connections between different texts as well as the development of national ideologies and mythologies. Examining pre-nineteenth-century writings that do not fit conceptions of the Wild West or of cowboys, cattle ranching, and the Pony Express, these thirteen essays demonstrate that no single, unified idea or geography defines the American West. Contributors investigate texts ranging from the Norse Vinland Sagas and Mary Rowlandson’s famous captivity narrative to early Spanish and French exploration narratives, an eighteenth-century English novel, and a play by Aphra Behn. Through its examination of the disparate and multifaceted body of literature that arises from a broad array of cultural backgrounds and influences, Before the West Was West apprehends the literary West in temporal as well as spatial and cultural terms and poses new questions about “westernness” and its literary representation.

Download or read book Nineteenth Century Art written by Stephen Eisenman and published by . This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The revised and expanded edition of Nineteenth Century Art: A Critical History embraces many aspects of the so-called 'new' art history - attention to issues of class and gender, reception and spectatorship, racism and Eurocentrism - while at the same time recovering the remarkable vitality, salience and subversiveness of the era's best art. Indeed, the authors insist that there is a profound sympathy between these new perspectives and the art under examination. For it was nineteenth-century artists who first addressed the issues that preoccupy audiences and scholars today: the relation between popular and elite culture, the legacy of the Enlightenment, the question of the canon, and the representation of workers, women and non-whites."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Edith Wharton

Book excerpt: First published in 1992, this volume of essays celebrates the revival of Edith Wharton’s critical reputation. It offers a variety of approaches to the work of Wharton and examines largely neglected texts. It differs from many other collections of Wharton criticism in its insistence that the entire body of Wharton’s work deserves attention. This book will be of interest in those studying nineteenth century and American literature.
