Book African Literature and the Future

Download or read book African Literature and the Future written by Adeoti, Gbemisola and published by CODESRIA. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many African countries achieved independence from their colonisers over five decades ago, but the people and the continent largely remain mere spectators in the arena of their own dance. The post-independence states are supposed to be sovereign, but the levers of economic and political powers still reside in the donor states. Not in many fora is the complex reality that defines Africa more trenchantly articulated than in imaginative literature produced about and on the continent. This is the crux of the essays collected in African Literature and the Future. The book reflects on Africa's past and present, addressing anxieties about the future through the epistemological lens of literature. The contributors peep ahead from a backward glance. They dissect the trend and tenor of politics and their impact on the socio-cultural and economic development of the continent as portrayed in imaginative writings over the years. One salient feature of African literature is the close affinity between art and politics in its polemics. This is well established in all the six essays in the book as the authors stress the interconnections between literature and society in their textual analyses. On the whole, there is an overwhelming feeling of angst and pessimism, but the authors perceive a glimmer of hope despite daunting odds, under different conditions. Thus, they depict the plausible fate of Africa in the twenty-first century, as informed by its ancient and recent past, gleaned from primary texts.

Download or read book Critical Discourse Analysis and Discourse of Power written by Anwar Elsharkawy and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-01-02 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2012 in the subject Speech Science / Linguistics, grade: Excellent with honor, , course: Critical Discourse Analysis, language: English, abstract: The present paper has shown the practical part of CDA according to three scholars, namely they are Norman Fairclough, Ruth Wodak, and Teun van Dijk. Their approaches are somehow different in method and way of interpretation. While Fairclough is brought up on the systemic-functional model of theory and thus often concentrates on rather limited amounts of research material, Wodak turns to sociolinguistics and ethnography with an emphasis on corpus-based research and on work with different approaches with a variety of empirical data as well as background information. However, the notion that language is inherently social remains a key assumption in both approaches. On the other hand, similarly to Fairclough, van Dijk acknowledges three different perspectives; text, discourse practice and sociocultural practice, and emphasizes on the link between textual analysis and sociocultural analysis. However, van Dijk differentiates himself from both Fairclough and Wodak in his understanding of social events or of social institutions and power relations. To van Dijk, social cognitions mediate between micro- and macro-levels of society, between discourse and action, between the individual and the group. Therefore, the focus on social cognition governs the process of analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kenyan-born novelist and playwright Ngugi wa Thiong’o and his collaborator, Micere Githae Mugo, have built a powerful and challenging play out of the circumstances surrounding the 1956 trial of Dedan Kimathi, the celebrated Kenyan hero who led the Mau Mau rebellion against the British colonial regime in Kenya and was eventually hanged. A highly controversial character, Kimathi’s life has been subject to intense propaganda by both the British government, who saw him as a vicious terrorist, and Kenyan nationalists, who viewed him as a man of great courage and commitment. Writing in the 1970s, the playwrights’ response to colonialist writings about the Mau Mau movement in The Trial of Dedan Kimathi is to sing the praises of the deeds of this hero of the resistance who refused to surrender to British imperialism. It is not a reproduction of the farcical “trial” at Nyeri. Rather, according to the preface, it is “an imaginative recreation and interpretation of the collective will of the Kenyan peasants and workers in their refusal to break under sixty years of colonial torture and ruthless oppression by the British ruling classes and their continued determination to resist exploitation, oppression and new forms of enslavement.”

Book Critical Discourse Analysis of Dove s Campaign for Real Beauty Advertisement

Download or read book Critical Discourse Analysis of Dove s Campaign for Real Beauty Advertisement written by Seda Evirgen and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-12-21 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, grade: 1,7, Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this paper is to explore how Dove experienced the corporate social responsibility paradox, which occurs when a CSR campaign hurts the brand’s reputation instead of benefiting it. Dove communicates its corporate social responsibility activities, as part of its marketing strategy, through social media, which caused in some cases criticism and backlash towards the brand. Even though the message from Dove, that everyone is beautiful in their own way, was perceived positively, the way it was being advertised and represented also caused negative consumer responses toward Dove. The advertisement that was criticized and is the object of investigation in this paper, is the body-shaped bottle advertisement, that was published as part of Dove’s Real Beauty Campaign. The analysis of the advertisement will be conducted according to Fairclough’s (1989, 1995) model for critical discourse analysis. The aim of the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is to explore the visuals, ideology and stereotypes behind the advertisement, what the reason for the negative responses could be, the role of social media in this context and the resulting consequences for Dove.

Book Labeling and Ideology in the Press

Download or read book Labeling and Ideology in the Press written by Innocent Chiluwa and published by Peter Lang Pub Incorporated. This book was released on 2011 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the discursive construction of Nigeria's Niger Delta ethnic militias in the Nigerian press. Over time, certain lexical items have been noted to occur frequently in the Nigerian press in representing the militia groups and their activities. This pattern of labeling which is often viewed as capable of causing further disaffection and conflicts produces a highly negative characterization of the key players in the crisis by consistently referring to them as 'militants', 'thieves', 'cultists', 'criminals', or 'terrorists'. While some of these labels may appear to correctly represent the activities of some of the insurgents, the systematic focus of the press on one partial aspect of the 'facts' at the expense of perhaps more important aspects of the Niger Delta situation bears the danger of outwardly factual reporting of news turning into a vehicle for spreading half-truths and even propaganda. Media labels motivated by the intention to establish a cultural norm or social attitude around this group of social radicals or perhaps around the Niger Delta people in general, may therefore be viewed as evaluative judgement and ideological. Concordance and collocational tools are used to provide semantic profiles of the most frequently used labels in the corpus and, where appropriate, to offer quantitative proof of the presence of potentially distorted value judgements in the discourses under investigation.

Book A critical discourse analysis of power and ideology

Download or read book A critical discourse analysis of power and ideology written by Anwar Elsharkawy and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-01-05 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Sociology - Individual, Groups, Society, grade: 4, , course: CDA, language: English, abstract: This paper has shown the relations of critical discourse analysis (CDA) to Power and Ideology, trying to present the most common theories of power, by which the term power can be defined. Though it is difficult to find an agreed definition of power because its concept is essentially contested, all approaches are true and there are general understandings among them: first the operation of power is the ability to get an individual to behave or not to behave in a particular manner and the ability to achieve one's goals while denying others access to the same. Second, modern power is persuasive and manipulative rather than coercive (i.e., using of force), or incentive, such as the explicit issuing of commands, orders, threats or economic sanctions. Third, Power can be ideological, commonsensical, or symbolic, and within these confines, it can operate at a range of different levels: the social, individual, military, state-based, legal, and so on. Fourth, although the process of power may be realized in different ways and in different social environments, the resources of power utilized may not be of the same type. Fifth, some individuals or groups may access or use strategic resources to maintain a position and a status of power over others.

Book The Divine Matrix by Gregg Braden A Critical Book Analysis

Download or read book The Divine Matrix by Gregg Braden A Critical Book Analysis written by Jean Cédric Obame Emane and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Literature - Modern Literature, grade: A, ( Atlantic International University ), course: SEMINAR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT I, language: English, abstract: In his book, Braden is referring to the universal field of energy, that the father of quantum physics, Max Planck – a German theoretical physicist whose work on quantum theory won him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918 – , describes as a field that connects everything. He calls that field of energy the Divine Matrix. Now, what is the Divine Matrix? According to the author, the Matrix is a universal energy that affects our reality; he uses quantum physics to explain it. Braden (2007, p. 52) mentioned that the Divine Matrix is everywhere at all time and that it is also the mind of the universe. Besides, the following book’s review will help us understand how the Matrix works in our everyday life. Equally important, before the reading of this book, I would experience the kind of things that I somewhat thought to be the unique person on this planet to ever experience. Most importantly, I was incapable of explaining them. It is true that I would as well question people around me if they ever experienced some of them. The answer was “yes”. But for the other experiences I did not even dare to ask someone else. The very purpose of this dissertation is to discuss some of the topics Braden tackles in his book. Because he talks about many themes, nevertheless I have selected those I thought to actually be highly relevant. Accordingly, I will discuss four (04) subjects: the connection which exists between everything within the Matrix; the origins of the universe is also another discussion of my dissertation. In addition to that, I shall debate bilocation and the power of imagination. On the latter, Braden (2007, p. 55) talks about the bridge between imagination and reality. Why do I term it as “power of imagination”? Because the author even if he does not use the expression “power”, conversely demonstrates that imagination in fact has a power. By utilizing the term “bridge”, he means imagination is not far from reality given that as human beings and being part of the Divine Matrix, we ourselves can create our own reality. The four above issues will be discussed in details.
