Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical Contributions to Early English Syntax The much debated question of French influence on English Syntax is not likely to be definitely settled. At the time of the Invasion, Anglo-Saxon was already in a state of rapid evolution. From the greater and more interesting part of the eleventh and twelfth centuries we possess only few and insufficient linguistic documents; our knowledge of Old English is limited. Many apparently new phenomena may also be due to similar constructions in Latin or Scandinavian. We cannot tell when French syntactical influence began, and have no means of measuring its strength. In some cases it may have been paramount, in others, altogether secondary; but exact proofs cannot be given. Special investigations like those of for (Stoffel) and the Absolute Participle in Middle English (Ross) show the difficulty of positive statements. One scholar asserts French influence as probable where another finds it only possible, or perhaps denies it. According to Einenkel, a large portion of the English Syntax is due to French, while Jespersen, in his 'Growth and Structure of the English Language', passes over the delicate question in significant silence. I have here - in chapters of very unequal length and plan - tried to show how new constructions may have arisen on native soil, favoured or not by foreign influence. Einenkel's 'Syntax' in Kluge's Geschichte der englischen Sprache (Grundriss der germanischen Philologie I, pp. 1071 - 1151) offers a convenient starting point in a great many cases. When I leave different assertions of French influence unnoticed, it is not to imply that I subscribe to all of them; but in the absence of new facts there is no need of entering into a discussion of the matter. French idiom did not only enrich the Vocabulary, it also left considerable traces in English Phraseology. Book A Middle English Syntax

Download or read book A Middle English Syntax written by Tauno F. Mustanoja and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a good orientation into the history of English grammar, several books are indispensable. One of those is Mustanoja’s A Middle English Syntax. However, for a long time this work was not readily available; the present edition changes that. This is a fac simile reprint from the 1960 publication which appeared as volume XXIII in ‘Mémoires de la Société Néophilologique de Helsinki’, with a new Introduction by Elly van Gelderen. Compared to Old English, Middle English has fewer grammars and textbooks devoted to it. This book provides an interesting supplement by going deeper into certain questions and, especially, into exceptions. The book points out differences with Old English and certain peculiarities of the Middle English system. It was originally written for students of Middle English literature but serves a linguist well in detailed descriptions of the parts of speech, the use of the various cases, gender, and number. Word order, complex sentences, and conjunctions were meant to be dealt with in a second volume, which was never published.

Book The syntax of early English

Download or read book The syntax of early English written by Olga Fischer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a guide to the development of English syntax between the Old and Modern periods. Beginning with an overview of the main features of early English syntax, it gives a unified account of the significant grammatical changes that occurred during this period. Four leading experts demonstrate how these changes can be explained in terms of grammatical theory and the theory of language acquisition. Drawing on a wealth of empirical data, the book covers a wide range of topics including changes in word order, infinitival constructions and grammaticalization processes.

Book An Historical Syntax of the English Language

Download or read book An Historical Syntax of the English Language written by Museo Di Roma and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-05-08 with total page 729 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frederik Theodor Visser's An Historical Syntax of the English Language, published in four massive volumes between 1963 and 1973, is certainly one of the cornerstones of research in English linguistics. Visser's achievements can hardly be overestimated. Before the advent of modern corpus linguistics, he compiled a remarkable wealth of detailed philological data from all periods of English and combined this with current grammatical analyses of his time. This has made this publications an indispensable resource for anyone investigating the history of English syntax. This reproduction of Visser's volumes is more than welcome, and timely, as the volumes have been out of print for quite some time and were sometimes a little bit difficult to navigate. Having a searchable and easy-to-use online version, although maybe not perfect, available now means a revival for scholarship that celebrates its fiftieth birthday without losing any of its relevance.

Book Early Middle English Syntax

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few decades, the book series Linguistische Arbeiten [Linguistic Studies], comprising over 500 volumes, has made a significant contribution to the development of linguistic theory both in Germany and internationally. The series will continue to deliver new impulses for research and maintain the central insight of linguistics that progress can only be made in acquiring new knowledge about human languages both synchronically and diachronically by closely combining empirical and theoretical analyses. To this end, we invite submission of high-quality linguistic studies from all the central areas of general linguistics and the linguistics of individual languages which address topical questions, discuss new data and advance the development of linguistic theory.

Book The Cambridge History of the English Language

Download or read book The Cambridge History of the English Language written by Richard M. Hogg and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the Cambridge History of the English Language covers the period 1476-1776, beginning at the time of the establishment of Caxton's first press in England and concluding with the American Declaration of Independence, the notional birth of the first (non-insular) extraterritorial English. It encompasses three centuries which saw immense cultural change over the whole of Europe: the late middle ages, the renaissance, the reformation, the enlightenment, and the beginnings of romanticism. During this time, Middle English became Early Modern English and then developed into the early stages of indisputably 'modern', if somewhat old-fashioned, English. In this book, the distinguished team of six contributors traces these developments, covering orthography and punctuation, phonology and morphology, syntax, lexis and semantics, regional and social variation, and the literary language. The volume also contains a glossary of linguistic terms and an extensive bibliography.

Book Connectives in the History of English

Download or read book Connectives in the History of English written by Ursula Lenker and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clausal connection is one of the key building blocks of language and thus a field where a wide range of syntactic, semantic, pragmatic and cognitive phenomena meet. The availability of large databases as well as considerable advances in corpus-linguistic methods have strengthened the interest in the history of features linking clauses or larger chunks of text. The papers in this volume combine a thorough corpus-based analysis of the history of individual connectives, their co-occurrence patterns, and patterns of variation and change from both intra- and inter-systemic perspectives with a variety of methodological tools, ranging from sophisticated methods of grammatical analysis to pragmatics, text linguistics and discourse analysis. Drawing on quantitatively and qualitatively improved data, the studies reconstruct the history of a wide range of connectives in English from various new theoretical perspectives.

Book The Development from Case forms to Prepositional Constructions in Old English Prose

Download or read book The Development from Case forms to Prepositional Constructions in Old English Prose written by Kiriko Sato and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development from a synthetic to an analytic language is one of the most important topics in English historical syntax. This development is reflected in the gradual decrease of case-forms and the replacement of their functions with equivalent prepositional constructions. Focussing on the Old English period, when case-forms and prepositional constructions overlapped in various functions, this book aims to answer an unresolved question: was there a significant change in the use of case-forms and, alternatively, in the use of prepositions plus case-forms in contexts where both types were possible? The author makes a statistical comparison between prose texts written in the early Old English period and texts of the later Old English period; she also takes into account stylistic features of individual texts. Thus, this book addresses this Old English syntactic issue both from a historical and a stylistic perspective and shows the stages of development during the Old English period.
