Book Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament Classic Reprint written by Heinrich August Wilhelm Meyer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament In the new revision of this Commentary the following works have been chie y examined. H. Bouman, comment. perpet. in Jac. ep., ed. 1863, the exposition of the Epistle by Lange (second edition, 1866) in Lange's Bibelwork, and the third edition of de Wette's exposition edited by Bruckner. Whilst in the rst of these works a deep and thorough examination of the thoughts of the Epistle is awanting, the work of Lange is too defective in exegetieal carefulness, which alone can lead to sure results. In order to comprehend the Epistle historically, Lange proceeds from the most arbitrary hypotheses, which often mislead him into very rash, and sometimes strange explanations. It is to be regretted that, with all his spiritual feeling and acuteness, he has not been able to put a proper bridle upon his imagination. The second edition of de Wette's Handbook, containing the exposition of the Epistles of Peter, Jude, and James, had been previously prepared by Bruckner. When in the preface to the third edition he says that he has subjected this portion of the Handbook to a thorough revision, and, as far as possible, has made the necessary additions and corrections, this assertion is completely justified by the work. Although the remarks of Bruckner are condensed, yet they are highly deserving of attention, being the result of a true exegetical insight. It were to be wished that Bruckner had been less trammelled by "the duty to preserve the work of de Wette as much as possible uncurtailed." Of the recent examinations on the relation of the Pauline View of justi cation to that of James, I will only here mention the familiar dissertation of Hengstenberg: "the Epistle of James," in Nos. 91-94 of the Exangelical Church Magazine, 1866; and the explanation of Jas. ii. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament, Vol. 7 Some account of the circumstance has been undertaken, of the plan adopted in preparing it, and of the abbreviations used throughout, will be found prefixed to the Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans, which also contains a Preface specially written by Dr. Meyer for the English edition of his work. It is unnecessary here to repeat the explanations there given except in so far as they concern the course which I have followed in presenting to the English reader Dr. Meyer's work without subtraction or addition. In reproducing so great a masterpiece of exegesis, I have not thought it proper to omit any part of its discussions or of its references - however little some of these may appear likely to be of interest or use to English scholars - because an author such as Dr. Meyer is entitled to expect that his work shall not be tampered with, and I have not felt myself at liberty to assume that the judgment of others as to the expediency of any omission would coincide with my own. Nor have I deemed it necessary to append any notes of dissent from, or of warning against, the views of Dr. Meyer, even where these are decidedly at variance with opinions which I hold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament: The Epistles of Peter and Jude The disciples, would have, in that they had forsaken all for Christ's sake (matt. Xix. In still more marked lines does the picture of his distinctive character stand out in the background of Christ's passion, when he first in vain self confidence promises to the Lord that he would never forsake Him, but would go with im even unto death, and then on the Mount of Olives is unable to watch with Him he wishes, thereupon, to save his Master with the sword, and follows Him even to the court of the high priest, but in sudden cowardice denies Him before the men-servants and maids, and as quickly, feeling the whole weight of his guilt, leaves the judgment-hall in tears. On account of these unquestionably serious vacillations in feeling and conduct, he nevertheless can not be accused of indecision of character. If he showed himself weak on particular occasions, this was the result partly of his sanguine temperament, in which action instantaneously fol lowed on excited feeling, and partly of his great self-confidence, into-which he was betrayed by the consciousness of his own strength. The denial of Christ led to his inward purification; all the more that after His resurrection Christ revealed Him self to Peter first among the apostles. And so to the thrice repeated question of the Lord, if he loved Him more than the others, he returned the answer, humble yet full of faith: Lord, Thou knowest that I love Thee. Book A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Gospel According to S Matthew Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Gospel According to S. Matthew The method of dealing with the Gospels upon the basis of these artificial assumptions seems to the modern student of life to cast an atmosphere of unreality round them, and to lead to results which are of the nature of theories without foundation in actual fact. Of course, it may ultimately prove to be the truth that these assump tions are in reality intuitions of facts of first-rate importance. And that is, indeed, my own belief. The Synoptic Gospels are, I think, historical sources for Christ's life of nearly equal value, and the reader is, I believe, in large measure in immediate touch with the acts and words of the historical Christ. The impression which he obtains of the Person of the Lord from one Gospel is, with very slight reservation, the same as that which is given him by another. In all of them it is the same Christ who acts and speaks. But these impressions or intuitions become Vicious when they are used as grounds for treating the Gospels in a quite artificial and mechanical way. So far from being, from the point of View of the student of history, axioms with which he starts, they themselves need to be proved and justified by historical investigation. Book A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Book of Genesis

Download or read book A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Book of Genesis written by James Gracey Murphy and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Book of Genesis: With a New Translation In introducing to the American public Dr. Murphy's Commentary on Genesis, I would commend it as a timely antidote to much of the negative and destructive criticism upon the Pentateuch which has so largely obtained in Germany, and of late in England also, rather than as a complete solution of the many and vexed questions in language, in science, and in history which pertain to the so-called "Books of Moses." The merits of Dr. Murphy's work are a nice critical analysis of the text, a candid consideration of all alleged difficulties, a common-sense view of the principles of interpretation, and a philosophical clearness and comprehensiveness in the statement of inference or of doctrine. It consists of an exact literal translation of such passages as contain either verbal or grammatical difficulties, and of a critical and exegetical commentary, based upon the grammatical construction of the text, and framed in view of the best lights of modern criticism and science. Thus, in the narratives of the creation and the deluge, our author unfolds step by step the literal meaning of the sacred writer, and evolves from the Hebrew a sense which well accords with the facts of astronomical and geological science. Book A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Gospel According to S Luke Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Gospel According to S Luke Classic Reprint written by Alfred Plummer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Gospel According to S. Luke This volume has no such ambitious aim as that of being a final commentary on the Gospel according to S. Luke. The day is probably still far distant when any such commentary can be written. One of the difficulties with which the present commentator has had to contend is the impossibility of keeping abreast of all that is constantly appearing respecting the Synoptic Gospels as a whole and this or that detail in them. And the Third Gospel abounds in details which have elicited special treatment at the hands of a variety of scholars. Every quarter, indeed almost every month, brings its list of new books, some of which the writer wishes that he could have seen before his own words were printed. But to wait is but to prolong, if not to increase, one's difficulties: it is waiting dum defluat amnis. Notes written and rewritten three or four times must be fixed in some form at last, if they are ever to be published. And these notes are now offered to those who care to use them, not as the last word on any one subject, but simply as one more stage in the long process of eliciting from the inexhaustible storehouse of the Gospel narrative some of those things which it is intended to convey to us. They will have done their work if they help someone who is far better equipped entirely to supersede them. The writer of this volume is well aware of some of its shortcomings. There are omissions which have been knowingly tolerated for one or other of two adequate reasons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
