Book Defending Standardized Testing

Download or read book Defending Standardized Testing written by Richard Phelps and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2005-03-23 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The education reform movement of the past two decades has focused on raising academic standards. Some standards advocates attach a testing mechanism to gauge the extent to which high standards are actually accomplished, whereas some critics accuse the push for standards and testing of impeding reform and perpetuating inequality. At the same time, the testing profession has produced advances in the format, accuracy, dependability, and utility of tests. Never before has obtaining such an abundance of accurate and useful information about student learning been possible. Meanwhile, the American public remains steadfast in support of testing to measure student performance and monitor the performance of educational systems. Many educational testing experts who acknowledge the benefits of testing also believe that those benefits have been insufficiently articulated. Although much has been written on standardized testing policy, most of the material has been written by opponents. The contributing authors of this volume are both accomplished researchers and practitioners who are respected and admired worldwide. They bring to the project an abundance of experience working with standardized tests. The goal of Defending Standardized Testing is to: *describe current standardized testing policies and strategies; *explain many of the common criticisms of standardized testing; *document the public support for, and the realized benefits of, standardized testing; *acknowledge the limitations of, and suggest improvements to, testing practices; *provide guidance for structuring and administering large-scale testing programs in light of public preferences and the "No Child Left Behind Act" requirements; and *present a defense of standardized testing and a vision for its future. Defending Standardized Testing minimizes the use of technical jargon so as to appeal to all who have a stake in American educational reform.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1991, this title was begun just before passage of the Education Reform Act of 1988 (ERA 88), which was implemented in the 1990s. This major act along with still-in-force provisions of the 1944 Education Act (with its 17 amendments) comprises the statutes governing education in England and Wales. Book University Examinations and Standardized Testing

Download or read book University Examinations and Standardized Testing written by Stephen P. Heyneman and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As countries today renew their use of educational testing, new concerns have arisen about how better to manage such testing. China provides one example of the new emphasis on purposefully managing the policies toward educational testing. In September 1984, the Chinese government asked the Economic Development Institute of the World Bank to assist the officials of the Ministry of Education in thinking through some of the policy options for examinations and standardized testing. As a result, a meeting was held in April 1985. This book summarizes the descriptions of testing systems in selected OECD countries and the advice given to the government officials following the meeting. The attention devoted to problems of logistics and to economies of scale are perhaps more pertinent to large, heterogeneous countries such as China. This book, however, contends that many of the principles discussed at the meeting and presented here are applicable to developing countries generally.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In response to this reality, Richard P. Phelps and a team of well-noted measurement specialists describe the current state of public debate about testing across fields, explain and refute the primary criticisms of testing, acknowledge the limitations and undesirable consequences of testing, provide suggestions for improving testing practices, and present a vigorous defense of testing as well as a practical vision for its promise and future." "Those who are charged with translating the science of testing into public information and policy - including administrators, social scientists, test publishers, professors, and journalists who specialize in education and psychology - will find a wealth of valuable information here with which to balance the debate."--BOOK JACKET.
