Donc, avant toute décision thérapeutique, l'odontologiste doit tenir compte de la diversité prothétique. La restauration prothétique nécessite une préparation de la dent devant respecter un certain nombre d'impératifs, mais aussi une détermination de la limite de préparation. Cette dernière peut revêtir différents profils et se situer à différents niveaux vis-à-vis du parodonte. Cependant, le choix concernant le profil et la situation de la limite de préparation ne se fait pas de façon arbitraire mais est influencé par divers facteurs cliniques dont il faut tenir compte. Après avoir considéré et évalué chacun de ces critères, la démarche intellectuelle du praticien doit aboutir à un choix prothétique définitif d'où découlent: le choix de la prothèse et du matériau utilisé le choix de la situation et du profil de la limite. Ainsi, la clé de réussite d'une restauration prothétique tant au niveau de son intégration biologique, physiologique et esthétique que de sa pérennité réside dans le choix et la réalisation des limites de préparation.
