Book Les Cristalleries Saint Louis

Download or read book Les Cristalleries Saint Louis written by Sébastien Lapaque and published by Actes Sud Editions. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charting the rich history and continuing legacy of France's oldest glass manufacturer In 1767, King Louis XV of France conferred the title of "Royal glassworks of Saint-Louis" on the Müntzthal glass workshop in Lorraine, already in operation for 200 years. Fifteen years later, the workshop's crystal glass formula was perfected, and the site was renamed the "Royal crystal-works of Saint-Louis." Since 1829, the workshop has devoted itself solely to the production of crystal, and "Saint-Louis crystal" products--dinner services in the signature "Trianon" pattern and luminous decorative pieces, chandeliers and lamps, exquisitely hand-decorated in 24-carat gold or platinum--have become synonymous with a certain tradition of luxury and refinement. Les Cristalleries Saint-Louis charts the history of 19th- and 20th-century design and craftsmanship as expressed in Saint-Louis luxury crystal products, and explores how partnerships with contemporary designers have brought the brand, representing France's oldest glass manufacturer, into the 21st century.

Book Industrial Espionage and Technology Transfer

Download or read book Industrial Espionage and Technology Transfer written by John R. Harris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain and France were the leading industrial nations in 18th-century Europe. This book examines the rivalry which existed between the two nations and the methods used by France to obtain the skilled manpower and technology which had given Britain the edge - particularly in the new coal-based technologies. Despite the British Act of 1719 which outlawed industrial espionage and technology transfer, France continued to bring key industrial workers from Britain and to acquire British machinery and production methods. Drawing on a mass of unpublished archival material, this book investigates the nature and application of British laws and the involvement of some major British industrialists in these issues, and discusses the extent to which French espionage had any real success. In the process it presents an in-depth understanding of 18th-century economies, and the cultures and bureaucracies which were so important in shaping economic life. Above all, the late John Harris saw the history of industrial espionage as ’one means of restoring the thoughts and activities of human beings to the centre stage of industrial history’. These are the stories of individuals - Holkers, Trudaines, Wilkinsons, or Milnes - and their impact on the world.

Book Picturing Marie Leszczinska 1703 1768

Download or read book Picturing Marie Leszczinska 1703 1768 written by JenniferG Germann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portraits of Queen Marie Leszczinska (1703-1768) were highly visible in eighteenth-century France. Appearing in royal ch?aux and, after 1737, in the Parisian Salons, the queen's image was central to the visual construction of the monarchy. Her earliest portraits negotiated aspects of her ethnic difference, French gender norms, and royal rank to craft an image of an appropriate consort to the king. Later portraits by Maurice-Quentin de La Tour, Carle Van Loo, and Jean-Marc Nattier contributed to changing notions of queenship over the course of her 43 year tenure. Whether as royal wife, devout consort, or devoted mother, Marie Leszczinska's image mattered. While she has often been seen as a weak consort, this study argues that queenly images were powerful and even necessary for Louis XV's projection of authority. This is the first study dedicated to analyzing the queen's portraits. It engages feminist theory while setting the queen's image in the context of portraiture in France, courtly factional conflict, and the history of the French monarchy. While this investigation is historically specific, it raises the larger problem of the power of women's images versus the empowerment of women, a challenge that continues to plague the representation of political women today.

Book Early Days of X ray Crystallography

Download or read book Early Days of X ray Crystallography written by André Authier and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2012 marked the centenary of one of the most significant discoveries of the early twentieth century, the discovery of X-ray diffraction (March 1912, by Laue, Friedrich, and Knipping) and of Bragg's law (November 1912). The discovery of X-ray diffraction confirmed the wave nature of X-rays and the space-lattice hypothesis. It had two major consequences: the analysis of the structure of atoms, and the determination of the atomic structure of materials. This had a momentous impact in chemistry, physics, mineralogy, material science, and biology. This book relates the discovery itself, the early days of X-ray crystallography, and the way the news of the discovery spread round the world. It explains how the first crystal structures were determined, and recounts which were the early applications of X-ray crystallography. It also tells how the concept of space lattice has developed since ancient times, and how our understanding of the nature of light has changed over time. The contributions of the main actors of the story, prior to the discovery, at the time of the discovery and immediately afterwards, are described through their writings and are put into the context of the time, accompanied by brief biographical details.

Book The Basics of Crystallography and Diffraction

Download or read book The Basics of Crystallography and Diffraction written by Christopher Hammond and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-05-07 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crystallography and diffraction are widely used throughout science for studying structure. However, many students find these subjects difficult. The aim of this book is to show, through relevant examples and without relying on complex mathematics, that the basic ideas behind crystallography and diffraction are simple and easily comprehensible.
