Download or read book Grands Courants D changes Intellectuels Georg Brandes Et la France L Allemagne L Angleterre Main Currents of Intellectual Exchanges Georg Brandes and France Germany Great Britain written by Annie Bourguignon and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The Danish writer Georg Brandes (1842-1927) is regarded as one of the founders of comparative literature. As a literary critic, he was highly influential in his time. He was also a politically engaged intellectual, advocating individual freedom and peoples' right to self-government; he also refused to take sides during the First World War and opposed warfare. The countries he knew best and where he had most friends and correspondents were France, Germany and Britain. Brandes' relationship to those countries was the subject of the Second International Georg Brandes Conference held in Nancy (France) in November 2008. The papers that were delivered there are collected in this book. The authors are from various countries (France, Denmark, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Great Britain, USA, Czech Republic...), stressing the international dimension of their research. The presence of the best Brandes' specialists as well as of scholars from various fields other than Scandinavian studies (French, German, English literature, philosophy, history, etc.) shows the diversity and richness in Brandes' work.

Download or read book Off to the Side written by Jim Harrison and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book: A memoir of the writing life of Jim Harrison, from hardscrabble years to high-profile Hollywood friendships, “as engaging as it is eccentric” (The Washington Post Book World). In this “sprawling, impressionistic memoir”, which was selected as a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, Jim Harrison chronicles his coming-of-age, from a boy drunk with books to a young man making his way among fellow writers he deeply admires—including Peter Matthiessen, Robert Lowell, W.H. Auden, Truman Capote, Tennessee Williams, and Allen Ginsberg (The New York Times Book Review). Harrison discusses forthrightly the life-changing experience of becoming a father, and the minor cognitive dissonance that ensued when this boy from the heartland somehow ended up a highly paid Hollywood screenwriter. He gives free rein to his seven obsessions—alcohol, food, stripping, hunting and fishing (and the dogs who have accompanied him in both), religion, the road, and our place in the natural world—which he elucidates with earthy wisdom and an elegant sense of connectedness. Off to the Side is a work of great beauty and importance, a triumphant achievement that captures the writing life and brings all of us clues for living. A true masterpiece of memoir from an author whose “writing bears earthy whiffs of wild morels and morals and of booze and botany, as well as hints of William Faulkner, Louise Erdrich, Herman Melville, and Norman Maclean.” (San Francisco Chronicle) “This fine memoir is a worthy capstone to a fascinating career.” —Publishers Weekly

Download or read book Living Kinship in the Pacific written by Christina Toren and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2015-04-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unaisi Nabobo-Baba observed that for the various peoples of the Pacific, kinship is generally understood as “knowledge that counts.” It is with this observation that this volume begins, and it continues with a straightforward objective to provide case studies of Pacific kinship. In doing so, contributors share an understanding of kinship as a lived and living dimension of contemporary human lives, in an area where deep historical links provide for close and useful comparison. The ethnographic focus is on transformation and continuity over time in Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa with the addition of three instructive cases from Tokelau, Papua New Guinea, and Taiwan. The book ends with an account of how kinship is constituted in day-to-day ritual and ritualized behavior.
