Book Cripple Joe

Book excerpt: Donald Davis has remarked that he "didn't learn stories, I just absorbed them" from a family of traditional storytellers that has lived on the same western North Carolina land since 1781. Considered by many to be the father of family tales, Donald turns the focus of his newest collection on his own father, Joe.As Donald reveals in the opening story, when he was 28, he mistakenly thought his father had died. Until learning of the mistake, he lamented that he'd been "too young and immature to know to ask for the stories that would have filled out his life." Given a "second chance," Donald asked those questions for the next 22 years. In this collection of 20 tender and often humorous stories--including one that tells how the elder Davis came to be called "Cripple Joe"--he shares the lessons he learned from his father. The late Wilma Dykeman wrote in an article for the New York Times, "I could have listened all morning to Donald Davis. . . . His stories often left listeners limp with laughter at the same time they struggled with a lump in the throat." If you are already a Donald Davis fan, here's his latest offering. If you have yet to discover him, here's your chance to see what all the excitement is about.

Joe Klein, Detective is a compilation of short stories showing Joe Kleins progress from rough-and-tumble SWAT team member to becoming a paraplegic and evolving into a thinking detective. Each of the murders, or the method Joe uses to solve the murder, is different. Hes aided in several stories by his live-in girlfriend, Claire, a professor of antiquities and ancient history at Fresno State. A number of the stories start out with no discernible clue, but either Joe or Claire finds a way. Sometimes based on logic and dogged police work, others, recent discoveries in biology and science. Most of the stories concentrate more on the solution to the crime than they do on the crimes commission. Even though this is an anthology of short stories, you can see the characters develop as the stories progress.

Worse yet, he lost his ability to be compassionate toward his patients. When he receives a desperate call from the one nurse who has acted as his guardian angel to care for her eleven-year-old granddaughter as his next cancer patient, Bernstein reluctantly agrees to break his "no children" policy and see her. Little does he know that Anna Bing is about to take hold of his heart and not let go. After Bernstein diagnoses Anna with Hodgkin's disease and lines up a course of treatments at a major medical center, he soon realizes that he feels an unexplainable bond with the girl. Despite her initially good prognosis, however, Anna's treatments fail; she is eventually sent back to Bernstein's hospital for terminal care. Along with her mother and grandmother, Bernstein continues a valiant fight for her life that tests him not only as a doctor, but also as a man. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tommy Turner is an English teacher at football-crazed Midwestern University. Although he is uninvolved with the politics of the day, Tommy suddenly finds himself the center of a free-speech debate on campus. An editorial in a student magazine praises him for planning to read Bartolomeo Vanzetti's sentencing statement to his class as an example of eloquent composition, even in broken English composed by a non-professional. The school's conservative trustees, led by Ed Keller threaten to fire Tommy if he doesn't withdraw the reading from his lecture. The subject of free speech and Tommy's dilemma of conscience anchor the dramatic subplot's social significance. The lighter comic triangle plot concerns a return visit to attend the big football game by Joe Ferguson, a former football hero and onetime love interest of Turner's wife Ellen. Joe is recently divorced and he rekindles Ellen's romantic notions at the very moment when her marriage to Tommy is being tested by the events on campus.

Download or read book Selected Poems written by Paul Laurence Dunbar and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2004-03-30 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dialect poems by one of the nineteenth century's most talented African American lyricists Paul Laurence Dunbar was “the most promising young colored man” in nineteenth-century America, according to Frederick Douglass, and subsequently one of the most controversial. His plantation lyrics, written while he was an elevator boy in Ohio, established Dunbar as the premier writer of dialect poetry and garnered him international recognition. More than a vernacular lyricist, Dunbar was also a master of classical poetic forms, who helped demonstrate to post–Civil War America that literary genius did not reside solely in artists of European descent. William Dean Howells called Dunbar’s dialect poems “evidence of the essential unity of the human race, which does not think or feel black in one and white in another, but humanly in all.” For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.
