Book The Crimson Wave

Download or read book The Crimson Wave written by Bill Horn and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-08-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word “Alaska” conjures visions of jagged icy peaks, smoking volcanoes, vast crimson tundra, sweeping blue rivers and lakes, shaggy brown bears, bush airplanes and pilots, remote Native villages, flashing rainbow trout, and rivers teeming with crimson salmon. These visions are realized, on a stupendous scale, in southwest Alaska’s Bristol Bay region. Each year 60 million or more wild salmon pour into the Bay to fight their way upstream past nets, anglers, bears, swirling rapids, and cascading waterfalls in lake and river systems with magical names—Iliamna, Kvichak, Naknek, Alagnak, Becharof, Egegik, Nushagak, Togiak, and Ugashik. Sport anglers travel to the region to pursue all five species of Pacific salmon, dolly varden and arctic char, grayling and giant rainbow trout that provide unmatched thrills on the end of a line with their explosive runs and twisting leaps. This unparalleled fishing—driven by the salmon—makes Bristol Bay the place of fly fisher’s dreams. In this book, author Bill Horn provides a detailed and compelling account of the natural history and life cycle of these fish as well as a glimpse into the culture, management, and politics that are part of the sockeye salmon story. It also offers essential information for anglers planning a trip to the region, including best times of the year for fishing, strategies and fly choices, and planning your trip.

Download or read book Everyday Discourses of Menstruation written by Victoria Louise Newton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-24 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Menstruation is a topic which is both everyday and sensitive. From Leviticus to Pliny, to twentieth-century debates around 'menotoxin', to advertising and 'having the painters in', Victoria Newton's book offers a lively and innovative exploration of the social and cultural dimensions of menstruation. Through in-depth interviews with men and women, the book explores the many different ways in which this sensitive topic is spoken about in British culture. Looking specifically at euphemism, jokes, popular knowledge, everyday experience and folklore, the book provides original insights into the different discourses acting on the menstruating body and encourages debate about how these help to shape our everyday attitudes towards menstruation.

Book It s a Bama Thing

Download or read book It s a Bama Thing written by Rob Lewis and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2022-08-23 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a humorous comparison on growing up in Alabama to a young athlete leaving home, undergoing, or enduring “The Process” and “growing up” in Crimson Tide country. It explores what it’s like to be a “Bama” fan...its experiences, the friendships, ups, and downs, trials, and tribulations of wearing the crimson and white. So, what’s it like to go anywhere in the country and hear “Roll Tide” loudly proclaimed by another fan? It’s the society of the “A”, the houndstooth coat and hat, about title town and eighteen football national championships (and counting!). Whether you’re from Alabama or not, if you’re a fan, you can relate to this story (haters beware!). At a Bama game, participation can be a raucous occasion, full of pageantry, passion, purpose, and pride. Big Al dances, the crowd feverishly roars out “Roll Tide” at every venue. It’s an event! Do you wear the colors? Do you bleed crimson and white (admittedly, difficult to do)? Have you declared your allegiance to the crimson “A” or the houndstooth pattern (usually happens at birth)? Do you tremble with excitement and delight whenever a team from title town plays (preparing your voice to erupt with “Roll Tide”)? Then far be it from me not to recommend this book as a good read. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll wonder and say to yourself, “Hmmm.” Hey, it’s relatable. Get comfortable, pull up a chair or sit up in bed, read and soak it in. I mean really...it’s a Bama thing!
