Book Rude Awakenings

Download or read book Rude Awakenings written by Carol Sicherman and published by New Acdemia+ORM. This book was released on 2012-08-28 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of a man navigating an era of upheaval, persecution, and suspicion: “A must read for students of 20th-century political and intellectual history.” —Robert Cohen, Professor of History and Social Studies Education, New York University Drawing on family papers, wide-ranging interviews, FBI files, American and German newspapers, a wide array of published sources, and her own memories, Carol Sicherman traces Harry Marks’s German American heritage, his education both formal and informal, his marriage to a fellow Communist from a poor Russian family, his rocky start as an academic, his anguish when confronted by his Communist past, and his ultimate creation of a satisfying career. Her sleuthing encompasses as well the paths to safety taken by his German friends as they found sanctuary around the world—in Russia, England, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Turkey, Palestine, Brazil, the United States, and Canada. “Of particular interest is Carol Sicherman's carefully researched description of the anti-Semitic atmosphere that Jewish students encountered at Harvard in the twenties and thirties, as well as the experience of a young American thrown into the turmoil accompanying the collapse of Germany's democracy and the appeal of Communism as an alternative to Nazism.” —Curt F. Beck, Professor Emeritus of Political Science, University of Connecticut

Book Upending the Ivory Tower

Download or read book Upending the Ivory Tower written by Stefan M. Bradley and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, 2019 Anna Julia Cooper and C.L.R. James Award, given by the National Council for Black Studies Finalist, 2019 Pauli Murray Book Prize in Black Intellectual History, given by the African American Intellectual History Society Winner, 2019 Outstanding Book Award, given by the History of Education Society The inspiring story of the black students, faculty, and administrators who forever changed America’s leading educational institutions and paved the way for social justice and racial progress The eight elite institutions that comprise the Ivy League, sometimes known as the Ancient Eight—Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Penn, Columbia, Brown, Dartmouth, and Cornell—are American stalwarts that have profoundly influenced history and culture by producing the nation’s and the world’s leaders. The few black students who attended Ivy League schools in the decades following WWII not only went on to greatly influence black America and the nation in general, but unquestionably awakened these most traditional and selective of American spaces. In the twentieth century, black youth were in the vanguard of the black freedom movement and educational reform. Upending the Ivory Tower illuminates how the Black Power movement, which was borne out of an effort to edify the most disfranchised of the black masses, also took root in the hallowed halls of America’s most esteemed institutions of higher education. Between the close of WWII and 1975, the civil rights and Black Power movements transformed the demographics and operation of the Ivy League on and off campus. As desegregators and racial pioneers, black students, staff, and faculty used their status in the black intelligentsia to enhance their predominantly white institutions while advancing black freedom. Although they were often marginalized because of their race and class, the newcomers altered educational policies and inserted blackness into the curricula and culture of the unabashedly exclusive and starkly white schools. This book attempts to complete the narrative of higher education history, while adding a much needed nuance to the history of the Black Power movement. It tells the stories of those students, professors, staff, and administrators who pushed for change at the risk of losing what privilege they had. Putting their status, and sometimes even their lives, in jeopardy, black activists negotiated, protested, and demonstrated to create opportunities for the generations that followed. The enrichments these change agents made endure in the diversity initiatives and activism surrounding issues of race that exist in the modern Ivy League. Upending the Ivory Tower not only informs the civil rights and Black Power movements of the postwar era but also provides critical context for the Black Lives Matter movement that is growing in the streets and on campuses throughout the country today. As higher education continues to be a catalyst for change, there is no one better to inform today’s activists than those who transformed our country’s past and paved the way for its future.

Book excerpt: It’s the 1980s, and secret agent Thomas Kuperthorne has spent the past four years hiding from contract killers in the Middle East while posing as “freelance foreign correspondent Tom Maddox” and spying for the Five Eyes Alliance - a powerful international intelligence agency. Now he is needed back home. That's because Canadian Minister of Defense Alphonse Roy has resigned his position without warning to run for the leadership of the largest separatist party in Quebec, though not before stealing the access code to NATO’s wideband global satcom network out from under the government's nose. He intends to use his possession of the code to blackmail the Canadian Federation to allow Quebec to separate without firing a shot, all the while intending to install himself as the first president of a sovereign Quebec. While the rest of Canada has no intention of bending to Roy’s demands, the possibility of Roy offering to sell the access code on the black market to the highest bidder provides the Alliance with a unique and dangerous opportunity to turn the tables and use the code as bait to attract representatives of the world’s most notorious criminal organizations to Canadian shores where they can be captured. The Canadian Military and the Five Eyes Alliance intend to be ready and to do exactly that. As a member of the press, “Tom Maddox” is tasked with infiltrating Roy’s leadership campaign to discover his nefarious plans for the stolen code, and provide much-needed intel to help the Alliance make unprecedented strides to bring down some of most dangerous regimes, cabals and cartels on the global landscape. But he can't do it alone. Much to his chagrin, his superiors have also enlisted Crimson Sumner, a beautiful and well-known Canadian actress (and periodic love interest), hoping to leverage her feminine wiles and celebrity status in a classic 'honeypot' infiltration operation, and gain better access to Roy and his inner circle beyond what any member of the media could accomplish working on their own. It’s a dangerous game and only becomes worse when a cabal based in East Africa, the Brown Mambas, enters the picture as a potential buyer of the stolen code. With their reputation as merciless traffickers of illegal arms and human lives, Thomas will have to decide what truly matters to him: justice and keeping Canada united, while saving thousands of innocent women from sex slavery or protecting the life of the woman he loves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cesar Chavez is the most prominent Latino in United States history books, and much has been written about Chavez and the United Farm Worker's heyday in the 1960s and '70s. But left untold has been their ongoing impact on 21st century social justice movements. Beyond the Fields unearths this legacy, and describes how Chavez and the UFW's imprint can be found in the modern reshaping of the American labor movement, the building of Latino political power, the transformation of Los Angeles and California politics, the fight for environmental justice, and the burgeoning national movement for immigrant rights. Many of the ideas, tactics, and strategies that Chavez and the UFW initiated or revived—including the boycott, the fast, clergy-labor partnerships and door-to-door voter outreach—are now so commonplace that their roots in the farmworkers' movement is forgotten. This powerful book also describes how the UFW became the era's leading incubator of young activist talent, creating a generation of skilled alumni who went on to play critical roles in progressive campaigns. UFW volunteers and staff were dedicated to furthering economic justice, and many devoted their post-UFW lives working for social change. When Barack Obama adopted "Yes We Can" as his 2008 campaign theme, he confirmed that the spirit of "Si Se Puede" has never been stronger, and that it still provides the clearest roadmap for achieving greater social and economic justice in the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Benjamin Franklin to Ragged Dick to Jack Kelly, hero of the Disney musical Newsies, newsboys have long intrigued Americans as symbols of struggle and achievement. But what do we really know about the children who hawked and delivered newspapers in American cities and towns? Who were they? What was their life like? And how important was their work to the development of a free press, the survival of poor families, and the shaping of their own attitudes, values and beliefs? Crying the News: A History of America's Newsboys offers an epic retelling of the American experience from the perspective of its most unshushable creation. It is the first book to place newsboys at the center of American history, analyzing their inseparable role as economic actors and cultural symbols in the creation of print capitalism, popular democracy, and national character. DiGirolamo's sweeping narrative traces the shifting fortunes of these "little merchants" over a century of war and peace, prosperity and depression, exploitation and reform, chronicling their exploits in every region of the country, as well as on the railroads that linked them. While the book focuses mainly on boys in the trade, it also examines the experience of girls and grown-ups, the elderly and disabled, blacks and whites, immigrants and natives. Based on a wealth of primary sources, Crying the News uncovers the existence of scores of newsboy strikes and protests. The book reveals the central role of newsboys in the development of corporate welfare schemes, scientific management practices, and employee liability laws. It argues that the newspaper industry exerted a formative yet overlooked influence on working-class youth that is essential to our understanding of American childhood, labor, journalism, and capitalism.
