Book excerpt: Crimson Hill comes from the fine old literary tradition of Great Expectations. There's the outrageous fortune bestowed upon the poorest family in town ... there's the envy of friends ... there's three generations overcome by poverty in the beginning and wealth in the end. This is the story of a long gone America, of love gained and lost, of treasures hidden and identities unknown. In the town of Crimson Hill luck is never what it seems and fate is always the dark, destructive force that tempts winners and losers alike. Don Clark France takes you to a town in the heart of the South, a town he knows well, where anything can, and does, happen. Step back in time with him and enter a world of warm meadows, meandering cows, and secret trysts down by the river. But don't fall in love just yet ...for nothing is what it seems and everything is just one remove from what we believe is normal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Future of the Image, Jacques Rancire develops a fascinating new concept of the image in contemporary art, showing how art and politics have always been intrinsically intertwined. For Rancire there is never a pure art: the aesthetic revolution must always embrace egalitarian ideals.

Book Framing the Sacred

  • Author : Eleanor Wake
  • Publisher : University of Oklahoma Press
  • Release : 2012-11-08
  • ISBN : 0806186607
  • Pages : 362 pages

Download or read book Framing the Sacred written by Eleanor Wake and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-11-08 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian churches erected in Mexico during the early colonial era represented the triumph of European conquest and religious domination. Or did they? Building on recent research that questions the “cultural” conquest of Mesoamerica, Eleanor Wake shows that colonial Mexican churches also reflected the beliefs of the indigenous communities that built them. European authorities failed to recognize that the meaning of the edifices they so admired was being challenged: pre-Columbian iconography integrated into Christian imagery, altars oriented toward indigenous sacred landmarks, and carefully recycled masonry. In Framing the Sacred, Wake examines how the art and architecture of Mexico’s religious structures reveals the indigenous people’s own decisions regarding the conversion program and their accommodation of the Christian message. As Wake shows, native peoples selected aspects of the invading culture to secure their own culture’s survival. In focusing on anomalies present in indigenous art and their relationship to orthodox Christian iconography, she draws on a wide geographical sampling across various forms of Indian artistic expression, including religious sculpture and painting, innovative architectural detail, cartography, and devotional poetry. She also offers a detailed analysis of documented native ritual practices that—she argues—assist in the interpretation of the imagery. With more than 200 illustrations, including 24 in color, Framing the Sacred is the most extensive study to date of the indigenous aspects of these churches and fosters a more complete understanding of Christianity’s influence on Mexican peoples.

Book Volcano ice Interaction on Earth and Mars

Download or read book Volcano ice Interaction on Earth and Mars written by J. L. Smellie and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2002 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on magmas and cryospheres on Earth and Mars and is the first publication of its kind to combine a thematic set of contributions addressing the diverse range of volcano-ice interactions known or thought to occur on both planets. Understanding those interactions is a comparatively young scientific endeavour, yet it is vitally important for a fuller comprehension of how planets work as integrated systems. It is also topical since future volcanic eruptions on Earth may contribute to melting ice sheets and thus to global sea level rise.
