Sexual murders are generally of two types — catathymic and compulsive. Catathymic homicides are caused by a breakthrough of underlying sexual conflicts. They can be unplanned, explosive (acute) attacks or planned murders stemming from a chronic obsession with, or disturbed attachment to, the victim. In compulsive homicides, a fusion of sex and aggression results in a powerful internal drive which pushes the offender to seek out victims to kill — and the killing itself is sexually gratifying. These murders also may be planned or unplanned. In compulsive homicides that are unplanned, the urge breaks through and disrupts the offender’s controls when a victim of opportunity crosses his path. The compulsive offender who plans his crimes often eludes law enforcement, and as a result he can have multiple (serial) victims over extended periods of time. Both forms of sexual murder — the catathymic and the compulsive — are presented in this volume from a clinical-descriptive perspective encompassing case studies with analysis. Recent advances in empirical research in sexual murder—including findings from the joint research project between John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit in Quantico—has published many important studies. These include such topics as necrophilia, foreign object insertions in sexual homicide, ritual and signature and temporal patterns in serial sexual homicide, mass murder, crime scene staging in homicide, and undoing (symbolic reversal) at homicide scenes. It shows that felony murder liability rests on a simple and powerful idea: that the guilt incurred in attacking or endangering others depends on one's reasons for doing so. Inflicting harm is wrong, and doing so for a bad motive—such as robbery, rape, or arson—aggravates that wrong. In presenting this idea, Guyora Binder criticizes prevailing academic theories of criminal intent for trying to purge criminal law of moral judgment. Researchers explored their relations to their victims, relationships to others, perceptions of murder, experiences with violence, and attitudes about femininity and murder. The study concluded that women murderers kill (1) when their relationship with the mate or child is felt to be directly and overtly destructive to them, and their sense of identity as a woman; (2) when they feel they cannot share their concerns and get support; (3) when they feel they have exhausted all other course of action; (4) when they have redefined and reinterpreted their negative situational in a way calling for action never before considered possible. Implications are drawn for the police role in handling domestic violence, for homicide prevention measures, and for postcrime treatment.

Book excerpt: When I was a young man, I loved traditional English murder mysteries, the ones in which all the suspects were assembled at the end of the book and some wily detective explained the reasoning and clues that led to the identity of the murderer. It was so exciting to watch the detective eliminate suspects and discard certain clues while embracing the clues, which led to the actual murderer. I would then reread the sections involving the murderer and see how the author had set up the clues that most times had eluded me. I had so much fun! I read all those mysteries and unfortunately have not found any who use that dramatic format, so I decided to write one myself. In Murder in St. Charles, the patriarch of a large, dysfunctional family is murdered on Christmas night in front of his adult children, sister-in-law, her boyfriend, and three members of his staff. Max Marten is a successful lawyer whose egocentric personality has made him many enemies—some in the legal community, others in his own family. The path to finding Max Marten’s murderer is psychologically complex and somewhat overwhelming for the small-town police force tasked with solving the crime until criminal psychologist Ray Lynn Park is brought in to consult on the case. It is Ray Lynn who solves the case through the use of psychology, intuition, karma, and a little bit of luck. And most importantly, she uses the little cells in her brain in the best tradition of detectives that went before her. Enjoy the book. I loved writing it.
