Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Carefully compiled' in 1867 'from prison documents, ancient papers, and other authentic sources,' this extremely rare book contains the full details of the crimes, trials and executions of every murderer, highwayman, rogue and rebel ever to swing from the York Tyburn. From nobles such as Lord Hussey, Sir Robert Aske and the Earl of Northumberland (who mounted the scaffold 'with a firm step'), to notorious villains such as William Nevinson, Dick Turpin (whose right leg started to shake as he awaited the drop) and Knaresborough schoolteacher-turned-murderer Eugene Aram, it is an enthralling tour through the executions of the North.Including the last words and prison letters of many of the condemned, and laced with a grim humour (as seen in the case of the murderer who begged the hangman to check the rope carefully lest it break and leave him 'a cripple for life'), it will fascinate anyone with an interest in criminal history.

Book Foul Deeds Suspicious Deaths in the West Riding of Yorkshire

Download or read book Foul Deeds Suspicious Deaths in the West Riding of Yorkshire written by Vivien Teasdale and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2009-11-19 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Another trawl through the records of dastardly deeds, this time around Yorkshire, taking in the whole of the boundaries of the ancient West Riding, which stretched as far up as Sedbrough in the north-west, just beyond Todmorden in the west, north to Kirkby Malzeard and east to Selby and Goole. Join the Dyon, Stanton and Thornton families if you dare and find out who killed which other member of their family. When the course of true love fails to run smoothly, the result can often be tragic, as it was in the case of star crossed lovers in Leeds and Wakefield or between man and wife as in cases in Doncaster, Thurlstone and Heckmondwike. Nor were children ignored by the law, being both victims and, quite often, perpetrators of foul deeds. Whatever you find in todays newspapers, youll find a parallel here knife crimes, drink-related crimes, bank robberies and mail robberies, riots and terrorism. Theres nothing new under the sun and these tales prove it.

Download or read book The Yorkshire Witch written by Summer Strevens and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the morning of 20 March 1809, the woman who had earned herself the title of ‘The Yorkshire Witch’ was hanged upon York’s ‘New Drop’ gallows before an estimated crowd of 20,000 people. Some of those who came to see Mary Bateman die had traveled all the way from Leeds, many of them on foot, and many of them were doubtless the victims of her hoaxes and extortion. A consummate con-artist, Mary was extremely adept at identifying the psychological weaknesses of the desperate and poor who populated the growing industrial metropolis of Leeds at the turn of the nineteenth century. Exploiting their fears and terror of witchcraft, Mary Bateman was well placed to rob them of all their worldly goods, yet she did much more than cause misery and penury; though tried and convicted on a single murder charge, the contemporary branding of Bateman as a serial killer is doubtless accurate. Meticulously researched, this accessible, and at times shocking retelling of Mary Bateman’s life, and indeed her death, is the first since the publication chronicling her criminal career appeared in print in 1811, two years after her execution. Not only focusing on the details of her felonies and the consequences to her victims, it also examines the macabre legacy of her mortal remains, a bone of contention (literally you might say!) with the continuous public display of her skeleton in the Thackray Medical Museum until the recent removal of this controversial exhibit.
