Book excerpt: Edgar Award Finalist: The true story of a serial killer who terrorized a midwestern town in the era of free love—by the coauthor of The French Connection. In 1967, during the time of peace, free love, and hitchhiking, nineteen-year-old Mary Terese Fleszar was last seen alive walking home to her apartment in Ypsilanti, Michigan. One month later, her naked body—stabbed over thirty times and missing both feet and a forearm—was discovered, partially buried, on an abandoned farm. A year later, the body of twenty-year-old Joan Schell was found, similarly violated. Southeastern Michigan was terrorized by something it had never experienced before: a serial killer. Over the next two years, five more bodies were uncovered around Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, Michigan. All the victims were tortured and mutilated. All were female students. After multiple failed investigations, a chance sighting finally led to a suspect. On the surface, John Norman Collins was an all-American boy—a fraternity member studying elementary education at Eastern Michigan University. But Collins wasn’t all that he seemed. His female friends described him as aggressive and short tempered. And in August 1970, Collins, the “Ypsilanti Ripper,” was arrested, found guilty, and sentenced to life in prison without chance of parole. Written by the coauthor of The French Connection, The Michigan Murders delivers a harrowing depiction of the savage murders that tormented a small midwestern town.

Book excerpt: In this “true story that reads like a novel,” the #1 New York Times–bestselling author reveals the facts behind a notorious Southern murder case (Library Journal). When North Carolina farmer Stuart Taylor died after a sudden illness, his forty-six-year-old fiancée, Velma Barfield, was overcome with grief. Taylor’s family grieved with her—until the autopsy revealed traces of arsenic poisoning. Turned over to the authorities by her own son, Velma stunned her family with more revelations. This wasn’t the first time she had committed cold-blooded murder, and she would eventually be tried by the “world’s deadliest prosecutor” and sentenced to death. This book probes Velma’s stark descent into madness, her prescription drug addiction, and her effort to turn her life around through Christianity. From her harrowing childhood to the crimes that incited a national debate over the death penalty, to the final moments of her execution, Velma Barfield’s life of crime and punishment, revenge and redemption, this is crime reporting at its most gripping and profound. “A painfully intimate, moving story about the life and death of the only woman executed in the U.S. between 1962–1998 . . . With graceful writing and thorough reporting, it makes the reader look hard at something dark and sad in the human soul . . . Breathes new life into the true crime genre.” —The News & Observer “Undertakes to answer the questions about the justice system and the motives that drive women to kill.” —The Washington Post Book World “An extraordinary piece of writing . . . The most chilling description of a legal execution that we are ever likely to get.” —Citizen-Times “Taut and engrossing on the nature of justice and the death penalty as well as on guilt and responsibility.” —Booklist

Raising her five kids alone in a rundown section of Sacramento, Theresa Cross Knorr seemed like the ultimate survivor. But her youngest daughter, 16-year-old Terry, told police another story: one almost too terrible to believe. But accused of imprisoning her children in a house of horrors... According to Terry, Theresa--no longer the petite brunette she once was--had turned insanely jealous of her pretty eldest daughters and enlisted the help of her two teenaged sons in a vicious campaign against their sisters. Of beating, torturing and killing her own flesh and blood... Terry's gruesome tale told how Theresa had drugged, handcuffed and shot 16-year-old Suesan, allowing her wounds to fester, until the day she ordered her sons to burn their sister alive. Next, Terry said Theresa severely beat 20-year-old Sheila and then locked her in a stifling broom closet, so that when the girl finally starved to death, her brothers dumped her body in the same desolate mountain range where they had cremated Suesan. She could be one of the most evil murderesses of our time... It took Terry five agonizing years to convince authorities to investigate her grisly accounts of burning flesh, starvation and torture...of a mother from hell, so sadistic and so deranged, she had become her children's own executioner. Wensley Clarkson's Whatever Mother Says ... is the true story of a mother, madness and murder.

Book excerpt: An “intimate” account of a double murder by a man once suspected as being the Golden State Killer (O, the Oprah Magazine,“20 Best True Crime Books”). In 1978, two tortured corpses—hooded, bound, and weighted down with engine parts—were found in the sea off Guatemala. Junior doctor Chris Farmer and his girlfriend, Peta Frampton, were still clinging to life when they were thrown from the yacht they’d been crewing. Here is the gripping account of how Chris’s family worked alongside police, the FBI, and Interpol to gather evidence against the boat’s Californian skipper, Silas Duane Boston. Almost four decades later, in 2015, Chris’s sister, Penny, used Facebook to track down Boston. Following the detailed, haunting testimony of his own two sons—who also implicated their father in a string of other killings—Boston was finally arrested and charged with two counts of maritime murder. A story of homicide on the high seas, Dead in the Water is also a tale of a family’s fortitude and diligence in tracking down a monster. “A real-life page turner more intriguing than anything on Netflix.”—Mail on Sunday “A heartbreaking tale of familial love and a sister’s hunt for justice. There are numerous twists and turns which would be disturbing if they were woven between the pages of a novel let alone as part of a true story.”—The Tattooed Book

Book Lethal Lovers

Download or read book Lethal Lovers written by Real Stories and published by Lethal Lovers. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like wounded animals, they are blinded by pain and rage by the loss of their lovers. Obsessed by sexual jealousy, they lose control of their lives, their hatred eating inside until they explode into violence and murder. These are stories about secrets, lies, and passion gone wrong. These are stories about murder. Real stories. The Murder of Betty Solomon In the early evening of 15 January, 1989, a 911 operator received a frantic call. Forty-year-old Betty Solomon uttered only six words before the call was disconnected. The operator alerted the police, but an error in communications led them to a wrong address. At 11:42 pm, the body of Betty Solomon was found by her husband in the family's Greenburgh apartment. She had been pistol whipped and shot nine times. The Murder of Jessica Manners On the Easter Sunday morning of 26 March, 1989, the nude body of Jessica Manners was found dumped on a rocky embankment near the edge of Setauket Harbor, Long Island, about five miles from her home. The Suffolk County police said that she had been strangled but that they had no suspects or motive in the case, the second murder of a teen-age girl on Long Island in that month. Shocked and saddened, the residents of the Strathmore neighborhood were asking one question over and over: Why did 14-year-old Jessica Manners leave her house late Saturday? The Murder of Noreen Boyle A 12-year-old boy leans towards the microphone in the witness stand, his face perfectly composed under his youthful 1980s haircut. His sweater and collared shirt are neatly arranged. The courtroom and the entire town of Mansfield, Ohio are transfixed; this boy, Landry, is giving critical evidence in the murder trial of his mother, who was found dead, encased in concrete with a plastic bag over her head, under the basement floor of his father's new home. The Murder of Dan & Linda Broderick The sleeping Linda, wearing a sheer nightgown, was curled next to her husband of less than seven months, snuggling under an expensive colonial print bedspread. They were a remarkably attractive couple, in the prime of their lives . . . lives that would last just a few minutes more. A creaking floor or some other slight sound stirred Dan from his sleep, and when he moved, Linda opened her eyes, too. They saw the intruder simultaneously. Linda screamed, "Call the police!" The Murder of Mary Cheshire & Darrell Durbin In the early morning hours of October 30, 1988, residents of the Alhambra Trailer Park in Palatka heard a gunshot, a scream that lasted "just a few seconds," and another gunshot. One resident reported looking out his trailer and seeing nothing unusual. Another saw a bedroom light on in Darrell Durbin's trailer; also Durbin's front door was ajar. When daylight came, neighbors reported seeing that cars parked in front of Durbin's trailer had flat tires, because they had been slashed. These neighbors called the police and reported the suspicious events they had witnessed. When a deputy arrived, he received no response from inside the trailer and entered through an unlatched door. There, he found the nude bodies of a man and a woman, both of whom had been shot and killed. The victims were Mary Cheshire and Darrell Durbin.

Throughout the years, three of Elisabeth's children mysteriously appeared on the Fritzls' doorstep; Josef and Rosemarie raised them as their own. But only Josef knew the truth about Elisabeth's disappearance... For twenty-seven years, Josef had imprisoned and molested Elisabeth in his man-made basement dungeon, complete with sound-proof paneling and code-protected electric locks. There, she would eventually give birth to a total of seven of Josef's children. One died in infancy—and the other three were raised alongside Elisabeth, never to see the light of day. Then, in 2008, one of Elisabeth's children became seriously ill, and was taken to the hospital. It was the first time the nineteen-year-old girl had ever gone outside—and soon, the truth about her background, her family's captivity, and Josef's unspeakable crimes would come to light.
