Book Global Study on Homicide 2013

Download or read book Global Study on Homicide 2013 written by United Nations and published by UN. This book was released on 2014-06-15 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Global Study on Homicide 2013 is based on comprehensive data from more than 200 countries/territories, and examines and analyses patterns and trends in homicide at the global, regional, national and sub-national levels. Such analysis is fundamental to understanding the various factors and dynamics that drive homicide, so that measures can be developed to reduce violent crime. The Study provides a typology of homicide, including homicide related to crime, coexistence-related homicide, and socio-political homicide. The nature of crime in several countries emerging from conflict, the role of various mechanisms in killing, and the response of the criminal justice system to homicide are also analyzed. A further chapter examines homicide at the sub-national level, and includes analysis at the city-level for selected global cities.

Book Crime Is Not the Problem

Download or read book Crime Is Not the Problem written by Franklin E. Zimring and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999-05-27 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Crime is Not the Problem, Franklin Zimring and Gordon Hawkins revolutionize the way we think about crime and violence--by forcing us to distinguish between crime and violence. The authors reveal that compared to other industrialized nations, in most categories of nonviolent crime, American crime rates are comparable--even lower, in some cases. Only when it comes to lethal violence does the United States outpace other Western nations, with homicide rates many, many times greater. London and New York City have nearly the same number of robberies and burglaries each year, but robbers and burglars kill 54 victims in New York for every victim death in London. Why are the risks so much greater that victims will be killed or maimed in the United States? And what can be done to bring the death rate from American violence down to tolerable levels? The authors show how the impact of television and movie violence on rates of homicide is wildly overrated, but emphasize the paramount importance of guns. By making the crucial distinction between lethal violence and crime in general, the authors clear the ground for a targeted, far more effective response to the real crisis in American society. Crime is Not the Problem will reshape the debate about crime control in the United States.

Unlike many CJ texts detailing the systems of select nations, or books that merely catalog types of international crime, Global Crime and Justice provides a critical and integrated investigation of the nature of crime and how a society reacts to it. The book first details types of international crime, including genocide, war crimes, international drug and weapons smuggling, terrorism, slavery, and human trafficking. The second half covers international law, international crime control, the use of martial law, and the challenges of balancing public order and human and civil rights.

Book Crime and Criminal Justice Systems in Europe and North America 1995 2004

Download or read book Crime and Criminal Justice Systems in Europe and North America 1995 2004 written by Kauko Aromaa and published by Criminal Justice Press. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent crime and criminal justice system trends in the countries of Europe and North America are reported, based on data in the sixth through the ninth United Nations Surveys on Crime Trends and the Operations of Criminal Justice Systems (CTS). The CTS is the main source of worldwide data on national recorded crime rates and criminal justice system operations. Data for the years 1995-2004 were obtained from official agencies in Canada, the U.S. and more than 30 countries in Europe, and were analyzed by a working group of international experts. The biggest strength of this dataset is that it allows the study of crime and criminal justice systems over a full ten-year period. Two of the major trends across Europe and North America in this period were: (1) On average, the number of criminal justice personnel and the resources of the national criminal justice systems remained stable. (2) The numbers of recorded assaults, robberies, drug-related offenses and frauds increased, while the numbers of thefts, auto thefts and burglary suspects decreased. The following 11 chapters provide extensive analyses of and statistical data on multinational trends: Introduction by Kauko Aromaa; Trends in Criminal Justice System Resources 1995-2004 by Beata Gruszczynska and Ineke Haen Marshall; Trends of Recorded Crime by Kauko Aromaa and Markku Heiskanen; Persons Brought into Initial Contact with the Police by Markku Heiskanen; Prosecution and Courts by Paul Smit; Juvenile Justice and the United Nations Survey on Crime Trends and Criminal Justice Systems by Steven Malby; Trends in Prison Population 1995-2004 by Roy Walmsley; An Empirical Approach to Country Clustering by Paul Smit, Ineke Haen Marshall andMirjam van Gammeren; Measu
