"[Fondation's] stark, hyperviolent, spookily erotic stories are absolutely addictive. COMMON CRIMINALS is a brilliant and claustrophobic rendering of life as it is lived in the cities of America today"-Barry Graham. "The inhabitants of Fondation's COMMON CRIMINALS are repelling and compelling, repulsive and attractive as they navigate life, compelled by the competing imperatives of their good intention and petty larcenous souls. A Dickens for the new millennium. This writer pulls no punches-he sees into the hearts and souls of LA and its inhabitants"-Sally Shore. "COMMON CRIMINALS will grab you where you live, and no let you up for breath"-Gary Phillips. "COMMON CRIMINALS is a dark account of LA alienation in a controlled style that sheds harsh, electrifying light on the darkness"-Ronald Sukenick.

Book excerpt: A series of True Crime cases headlined by the murder of Annie Le...Annie was hungry for knowledge and she was determined to change the medical community with scientific breakthroughs. Although her passion was primarily medical, she was an academic writer as well. In the February of 2009 she published an article in Yale Medical School's Magazine. The ironic title of this article was "Crime and Safety in New Haven". This article was based on campus safety and it looked at the amount of robberies in New Haven, compared to other cities that housed Ivy Level schools. It advised students on the different campus safety methods such as; the buddy system, utilizing campus police, and avoiding drugs and alcohol. Her article included an interview with Yale's police Chief. In the interview Chief James Perrotti states "pay attention to where you are and avoid portraying yourself as a potential victim." Annie was quoted as stating "In short, New Haven is a city and cities have their perils, but with a little street smarts, one can avoid becoming yet another statistic." Perrotti mentioned that victims of a crime should always make not of their attacker's shoes. "It's important to take not of the attacker's physical appearance, especially the shoes. The shoes are very important because they can shed the clothing along the way... shoes are unique." How does an intelligent and well-versed student like Annie Le get murdered?

Book excerpt: A cross between The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and A Year in Provence, this ingenious thriller gets stunning raves from one and all: "A marvel." - Olen Steinhauer • "Riveting." - France Today • "Elements of Agatha Christie and Robert Ludlum." - Bookreporter.com • "'Superbe'." - Jim Fusilli • "Like a good Alan Furst or Graham Greene." - The Washingtonian • "Engaging." - Publishers Weekly Le Crime is a story of political intrigue, corruption and jealousy. It is also a story of love and friendship and, of course, France. When political intrigue drove Louis Morgon from a successful career at the State Department, he moved to a cottage in France, far from Washington and what he called "the sordid world." He took up painting. He grew vegetables and flowers. He ate long, lovely meals on the terrace overlooking fields of sunflowers. He thought that he had found happiness. Then one day Louis's past lands squarely on his doorstep. It does so in the shape of a dead man. His throat has been slit. He wears a cap with liberte embroidered on it. Except for the local cop, Jean Renard, the police are strangely uninterested. This seems peculiar to Renard, but not to Louis. He knows who the murderer is. He also knows that he is likely to be the next victim. And there is very little he or Renard or anyone else can do. Each clue they find raises more questions than it answers. Nothing is as it appears. Louis's best hope is to turn the tables on his murderer. Instead of knowledge, he has only his intuition and his intelligence. Instead of power or influence, he has only his own past. Louis finds himself on a lonely and dangerous journey of self-discovery. He thought he was beyond surprises. But every turn of the road reveals new mysteries, and the resolution is a shock. This book was previously published as A French Country Murder.

Book Male Criminal Activity from Childhood Through Youth

Download or read book Male Criminal Activity from Childhood Through Youth written by Marc Le Blanc and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Male Criminal Activity From Childhood Through Youth reports the results of a large longitudinal study from 1972 to 1985 on a sample of delinquents and a comparison sample of the population in Montreal. A clarification emerges from this extensive study: how to describe criminal activity in a comprehensive theory of crime which integrates the offense, offending, and patterns of offending. Using a developmental approach, Drs. Le Blanc and Fréchette observed a gradation of crimes with subjects progressing through five distinct stages of offending. In all, the research investigates the factors that sustain the development of offending and the mechanisms which accelerate, stabilize, and decelerate the commission of crimes. This book represents a significant advance in the understanding of the development of criminal activity.

Book Crime Opportunity Theories

Download or read book Crime Opportunity Theories written by Mangai Natarajan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opportunity theories of crime seek to explain the occurrence of crime rather than simply the existence of criminal dispositions. They emphasize the fundamental element in the criminal act of opportunity: how this arises, how it is perceived, evaluated and acted on by those with criminal dispositions. This volume brings together influential research articles on opportunity theories of crime by leading theorists such as Cohen and Felson on routine activity theory and Clarke and Cornish on the bounded rational choice perspective. The articles also include more recent theoretical developments and studies of situational crime prevention of specific twenty-first century crimes. These articles attest to the sheer volume as well to as the richness and the variety of work designed to reduce crime that has forever changed the face of criminology and criminal justice.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE • “A taut page-turner with all the hallmarks of a good historical thriller.”—Orlando Sentinel The gripping true story of the duel to end all duels in medieval France as a resolute knight defends his wife’s honor against the man she accuses of a heinous crime In the midst of the devastating Hundred Years’ War between France and England, Jean de Carrouges, a Norman knight fresh from combat in Scotland, returns home to yet another deadly threat. His wife, Marguerite, has accused squire Jacques Le Gris of rape. A deadlocked court decrees a trial by combat between the two men that will also leave Marguerite’s fate in the balance. For if her husband loses the duel, she will be put to death as a false accuser. While enemy troops pillage the land, and rebellion and plague threaten the lives of all, Carrouges and Le Gris meet in full armor on a walled field in Paris. What follows is the final duel ever authorized by the Parlement of Paris, a fierce fight with lance, sword, and dagger before a massive crowd that includes the teenage King Charles VI, during which both combatants are wounded—but only one fatally. Based on extensive research in Normandy and Paris, The Last Duel brings to life a colorful, turbulent age and three unforgettable characters caught in a fatal triangle of crime, scandal, and revenge. The Last Duel is at once a moving human drama, a captivating true crime story, and an engrossing work of historical intrigue with themes that echo powerfully centuries later.
