Book Silence Of The Heart

Download or read book Silence Of The Heart written by David Frith and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-12-16 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cricket has an alarming suicide rate. Among international players for England and several other countries it is far above the national average for all sports: and there have been numerous instances at other levels of the game. For thirty years, celebrated cricket author David Frith has collected data on this sad subject. Silence of the Heart is his compelling account of over a hundred cricketers - involving top names from the past hundred years - who have taken their own lives, with an explanation of factors that led to their premature deaths. Can the shocking rate of self-destruction among cricketers be reduced? Can those who run the game do something to save its participants from this dreadful fate? These are among the questions addressed within this catalogue of biographies. But the key question is whether cricket itself is to blame for its losses - or is that this summer game attracts people of a melancholic and over-sensitive nature? Stoddart, Shrewsbury, Gimblett, Bairstow, Trott, Iverson, Robertson-Glasgow, Barnes . . . There remains a sense of disbelief that these high-profile cricketers killed themselves. And many more cases are examined in this extraordinary book, which comes crammed with detail, is not devoid of humour, and must rank among the most intricately researched volumes in cricket's extensive library. With a foreword by former England captain Mike Brearley, now a psychotherapist, Silence of the Heart is a startling investigative narrative covering the phenomenon of cricket's unduly high level of suicide.

Book The Strange Death of English Leg Spin

Download or read book The Strange Death of English Leg Spin written by Justin Parkinson and published by Pitch Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shane Warne has shown the world how to bowl leg spin. But how many people know that English cricketers pioneered the art? Leg breaks, googlies, flippers - all were invented here. So how did we come to give it all away? Reach the point where home crowds would boo an English leggie's efforts, yet then pay gracious tribute to the Australian master of the most beautiful form of bowling known to man. The Strange Death of English Leg Spin shows how a century of neglect effectively killed any chance of England producing its own Warne. Petty rivalries, mistrust, ridiculous rule changes, jealousies, ineptitude and neglect combined to ensure that Ian Salisbury, Tich Freeman, Chris Schofield and others never had a chance to become world-beaters. Featuring interviews with key players, psychologists and coaches and in-depth historical research, the book suggests how England can once again become the global centre of leg spin.

Book excerpt: (Author's Preface)I should like to state at the beginning of my book that what is stated in it on controversial matters is my own firm opinion, except where in a few cases the views of other people are published and their names given.I wish to make it clear that though there were, and are, sharp differences of opinion on the subject of Fast-Leg-Theory bowling between myself and some Australians, there was always an atmosphere of complete cordiality between the teams on both sides. Although we differ seriously over my Fast-Leg-Theory bowling I have done my best in the following pages not to disturb that atmosphere.Until now my side of the matter has not been heard. I have refused many tempting offers to break silence. As a fast bowler and a hitter by nature I have written strongly because I cannot express myself otherwise.I hope very much indeed that in doing so, though I was one, of the aggrieved parties in Australia, I have given nobody half the offence from which I suffered so often on the last tour.A belief exists that some of the things I have written about are not yet to be discussed.Obviously I differ from that view. I do so because I feel that in a matter of such vital interest to cricketers as the possible admission by legislation of such a far-reaching principle as that bowlers may not bowl as they like, no cricketer can keep silent. I believe I have only written here what very many cricketers are saying. But I have written supported by first-hand knowledge. For the many imperfections of style and language in my first book I beg the indulgence of my reader.Yours Sincerely,H. Larwood

Book Near Death on the Sub Continent

Download or read book Near Death on the Sub Continent written by David Jenkins and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gavin Stevens was a talented schoolboy cricketer who played 'B' Grade district cricket for Glenelg D.C.C. at the age of 14. Originally a fast bowler, Gavin developed into a powerful opening batsman. Very early in his career he forced his way into the South Australian state side. He struggled early to establish himself but time in England, following the early death of both parents, matured him and he returned a better player. Success in his final two years of domestic first class cricket saw him selected in the Australian team for the inaugural full tour of Pakistan and India. His great joy soon became a nightmare as he joined the list of players who succumbed to serious illness. In Gavin's case not only was his career threatened but so was his life. The tour changed him in several ways and he never played first-class cricket again. The book titled NEAR DEATH ON THE SUB-CONTINENT - THE GAVIN STEVENS STORY is a wonderful tale. It looks at Steven's early struggles and ends with a look at his business career that is truly remarkable. The story of Bradman and his thoughts on Test players, especially Stevens, is interesting. The book of 183 pages includes statistics of Stevens' career and has some previously unpublished photos. With stiffened wrappers the book is a must for those interested in Australian tours to the sub-continent and South Australian cricket in the 1950s.

Book excerpt: Eighteen-year-old Haven doesn’t remember life before the Surge. Before electricity was zapped to near non-existence. Before families sold their children and big cities became ghost towns. Before she met her best friend Cricket, the 6’10” boy she rescued from a freak show. After spending a year as the McCall circus’s star dancer, Haven is blindsided when her employer sells her to a brothel. Refusing to be sold into prostitution, she hatches an escape plan, but after her final show, she and Cricket are interrupted mid-escape by an intoxicated assassin named Breck. He is everything Haven fears about the outside world - dangerous, cold, and yet incredibly charming. But Breck’s arrival ends with a trail of blood and their faces plastered on WANTED posters. Haven agrees to leave under his protection on one condition - Cricket goes too - and because Breck can’t fight his burning infatuation with Haven, he agrees. Hopping trains and hiding out in a misfit circus wasn’t the life she’d envisioned, but as Breck’s hard exterior softens and Cricket’s smile is no longer painted, Haven finally realizes how badly she wants to be free and in control of her own life. With the brothel and McCall’s investors closing in on them, Haven must fight for what she wants - but the price for freedom is greater than she ever imagined.

Book Mystery Spinner

Download or read book Mystery Spinner written by Gideon Haigh and published by Aurum Press. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is no mystery that today Jack Iverson is virtually unknown. An unexceptional estate agent who died in obscurity, by his own hand, he was a clumsy fielder and a hopeless batsman. But for four years he was the best spin bowler in the world. Iverson took up cricket, at the advanced age of 31, as capriciously as he left it â?? joining a club 3rd XI in Melbourne one day, and instantly announcing himself as the most prodigious and improbably spinner of a cricket ball. Using a technique that he appears to have perfected with a ping-pong ball, he doubled back his middle finger and found he could bowl leg breaks, top spinners and googlies, every one dropped on a perfect length and impossible to pick. Within four years he was bowling the Australian Test side to victory over England in the Ashes series of 1950-51. Then, in his moment of triumph, he retired from international cricket, and was never the same bowler again. Gideon Haighâ??s quest for the truth about this enigmatic, elusive man, with the strangest grip any spinner had ever used, is not just a story of a forgotten hero, but an attempt to solve the enduring riddle of Iversonâ??s life. Shortlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year, and voted Cricket Book of the Year, with the judges commending a 'stunning and most moving book', Mystery Spinner is a truly compelling study of how, at the highest level of sport, skill is only half the battle.

The only certainty is that Charles Rose's body did not go directly to a grave. Written with clarity and verve, and drawing on a rich array of material, Possessing the Dead explores the disturbing history of the cadaver trade in Scotland, England and Australia, where laws once gave certain officials possession of the dead, and no corpse lying in a workhouse, hospital, asylum or gaol was entirely safe from interference. With a rare blend of curiosity, delight in the unexpected and an eye for detail, award-winning historian Helen MacDonald brings to life this gruesome past to reveal the chicanery at play behind the procuring of bodies for dissections, autopsies and collections.
