Book Superstar India

Download or read book Superstar India written by Shobhaa De and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2015-08-15 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vintage Shobhaa Dé, with scathing take-offs on everything, from the caste system to male chauvinism, from sex to social pretension . . . in other words, it's all great fun'-Economic Times Watching the preparations for independent India's 60th birthday in 2007, Dé-poised then to enter her own sixth decade-was struck by the thought, 'Surely my life has taken the same trajectory as the country's!' While she reflected on this, many more questions arose: Does India really deserve to congratulate itself? Has it lived up to the early promises it made to its people? Does Dé herself believe in India? In Superstar India, an intimate confession to her readers, Dé answers these questions and discovers a jawan-young-India, ready to find its place in today's world. Witty, passionate and gloriously opinionated, Superstar India celebrates the spirit of a nation that is certainly not about to lose its glow.

Book Silence Of The Heart

Download or read book Silence Of The Heart written by David Frith and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-12-16 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cricket has an alarming suicide rate. Among international players for England and several other countries it is far above the national average for all sports: and there have been numerous instances at other levels of the game. For thirty years, celebrated cricket author David Frith has collected data on this sad subject. Silence of the Heart is his compelling account of over a hundred cricketers - involving top names from the past hundred years - who have taken their own lives, with an explanation of factors that led to their premature deaths. Can the shocking rate of self-destruction among cricketers be reduced? Can those who run the game do something to save its participants from this dreadful fate? These are among the questions addressed within this catalogue of biographies. But the key question is whether cricket itself is to blame for its losses - or is that this summer game attracts people of a melancholic and over-sensitive nature? Stoddart, Shrewsbury, Gimblett, Bairstow, Trott, Iverson, Robertson-Glasgow, Barnes . . . There remains a sense of disbelief that these high-profile cricketers killed themselves. And many more cases are examined in this extraordinary book, which comes crammed with detail, is not devoid of humour, and must rank among the most intricately researched volumes in cricket's extensive library. With a foreword by former England captain Mike Brearley, now a psychotherapist, Silence of the Heart is a startling investigative narrative covering the phenomenon of cricket's unduly high level of suicide.

Book Batting for the Empire

Download or read book Batting for the Empire written by Mario Rodrigues and published by Penguin Group. This book was released on 2003 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Definitive Biography Of An Indian Prince And English Cricketer Ranji Is Enshrined In Popular Perception As The Sporting Icon Who Electrified Victorian England And Scored Over 25,000 Runs Without Ever Playing A Christian Stroke . But There Was A Lot More To The Mysterious Prince Of Hindoo And Much Of It Doesn T Quite Fit With The Extant Stereotype Of The Charming, Generous Sportsman, Progressive Ruler And Enlightened Statesman. The Picture That Emerges From This Long-Overdue Political Biography Is That Of Hrh Jekyll And Maharaja Hyde. The Jam Saheb Of Nawanagar Was An Autocrat, An Often-Absentee Landlord Who Was Flayed By The Press For Ruthlessly Squeezing Money Out Of His Subjects For A Lavishly Spendthrift Durbar. He Did Little To Promote Cricket In His Own Country, And Refused To Let His Talented Nephew Duleep Represent India. More Than That, Ranji Fought Tooth And Nail To Preserve The Raj. As An Important Functionary Of The Princely Order And Chancellor Of The Chamber Of Princes, He Played An Influential And Strikingly Reactionary Role In The Period Between The World Wars. Even As An Increasingly Strident Nationalist Movement Challenged The British Across The Subcontinent, Ranji Schemed And Lobbied For The King-Emperor, To Keep India Bound To The Empire. Batting For The Empire Sheds Light On The Contradictions Between The Sussex Skipper And The Gujarati Despot, And Examines The Tangled Relationships Between The Native States, British India And The British. Mario Rodrigues Has Accessed An Enormous Amount Of Material From A Variety Of Sources To Chronicle The Fascinating Life Of A Complex Man Who Occupied Centre Stage In A Complex Era.
