Download or read book The Brazilian Economy written by Werner Baer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-05-30 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing the analysis of Brazil's economic performance up to date, Baer's classic text remains the only book in English to provide a thorough historical, statistical, and institutional description of the Brazilian economy. After touching on such issues as Brazil's exporting economy prior to the 1930s, the impact of external shocks, and the historical struggle to bring inflation under control, the book turns to contemporary issues. The changing nature of Brazil's international trading and investment links, the past role of state enterprises and the process of privatization, the agricultural sector, environmental issues, and the economics of the health delivery system are thoroughly examined. Offering a full statistical and institutional description of Brazil's economy, this book includes a review of the major controversies surrounding such issues as the high degree of concentration in the country's income distribution, the causes of inflation, the impact of various stabilization programs, and the influences of the state in the economy. Scholars, students, international institutions dealing with development, and corporate officers dealing with Latin America will welcome this up-to-date, definitive book on one of the world's largest economies.

Download or read book A Ditadura Militar e a Governan a da gua no Brasil The Military Dictatorship and Water Governance in Brazil written by Fernanda de Souza Braga and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-03-11 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades there has been an exponential increase in large hydroelectric plants in Brazil, especially in the Amazon region. These large hydraulic structures impact the environment and the lives of people living in the places where they settle and require a special type of water governance. The dictatorial regime (1964-1985) created a "standard" for the construction of these great structures, through an institutional and legal framework, which benefited the Brazilian business elite but also, through the creation of a popular imagination, which shows itself lasting progress on the country's progress and development. The suspension of security, the fragility of institutional environmental structures, the disrespect for indigenous reserves, the lack of clarity about the concept of "affected population" and the non-payment of fair compensation were identified as one of the main challenges for a democratic water governance in the country. In the late 1970s, the Dam-Affected Movement (MAB) began its organization and is also studied in this research. The study is an important and insightful academic contribution to the understanding of the main bottlenecks of effective water governance in Brazil.

Download or read book The Economic Rise of China written by Zhihua Wang and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-08 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to reinvigorate debates on the growing forces influencing China’s social and economic evolution. It draws attention to several neglected areas in the discussion of China’s rapid economic expansion, such as unbalanced growth, mass internal migration, international labour flows, and disparities in access to education, public health, and housing. China’s rapid economic development has attracted the interest of many scholars following its emergence as the world’s second largest economy and stimulated research into the underlying factors that have made this development unique. In advancing research, the chapters included in this edited book help with refining our understanding of the forces that have been driving China’s social- economic, political, institutional and technological developments, addressing the related issues, thus, advancing the social economic literature within the China context. This book serves the interests of scholars who seek to understand more fully the development of China as well as of other emerging economies. One of the chapters in this volume was originally published in the Review of Evolutionary Political Economy. Other chapters were originally published in the Forum for Social Economics.
