Book Creeping Death from Neptune

Download or read book Creeping Death from Neptune written by Basil Wolverton and published by Fantagraphics Books. This book was released on 2012-05-31 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first in a two-volume retrospective―collecting full comics stories, unpublished art, ads, etc.―and biography of the famous Mad cartoonist. This is the first of two volumes reprinting copious amounts of comics stories and recounting the career of cartoonist Basil Wolverton. Based on his correspondence and journals, the biographical portion of the books follow Wolverton from childhood to adult day-to-day life as freelance cartoonist, itinerant handyman, persistent contest enterer, and local pastor of the Radio Church of God. Wolverton lived and worked in the Pacific Northwest, unique among the first generation of comic book pioneers. In the precious period before the industry calcified into a commercial institution, Wolverton was free to work under the radar to explore in detail his weird tales of the future. The book collects all of Wolverton’s non-humorous comic stories and a substantial selection of his humorous comics, alongside dozens of pages of unpublished artwork, unsold features, and never-before-seen correspondence, including rejection letters!

  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book Spacehawk written by Basil Wolverton and published by Fantagraphics Books. This book was released on 2012-12-07 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complete collection of Wolverton's legendary costumed crusader. Basil Wolverton is one of the greatest, most idiosyncratic talents in comic book history. Though he is best known for his humorous grotesqueries in MAD magazine, it is his science-fiction character Spacehawk that Wolverton fans have most often demanded be collected. The wait is over, as The Complete Spacehawk features every story from Spacehawk’s intergalactic debut in 1940 to his final, Nazi-crushing adventure in 1942. Spacehawk is the closest thing to a colorfully-costumed, conventional action hero Wolverton ever created, yet the strip is infused with Wolverton’s quintessential weirdness: controlled, organic artwork of strangely repulsive aliens and monsters and bizarre planets, and stories of gruesome retribution that bring to mind Wolverton’s peer, Fletcher Hanks. Spacehawk had no secret identity, no fixed base of operations beyond his spaceship, and no sidekicks or love interests. He had but one mission in life: to protect the innocent throughout the Solar System, and to punish the guilty. He was a dark ― yet much more visually playful ― counterpart to Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon.

Download or read book The Meaning of Metallica written by William Irwin and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Join Professor Irwin as he traces the lyrical development of the “thinking man’s” metal band and uses the themes in Metallica’s work to illuminate topics such as truth, identity, questions of life and death, the mind-body problem, justice, and more…. More than 40 years since their formation, and 125 million album sales later, Metallica is as relevant as ever. Much has been written about the band, but The Meaning of Metallica is the first book to focus exclusively on their lyrics. Their mighty guitar riffs and pounding drums are legendary, but Metallica’s words match the intensity of their tunes. Lead singer James Hetfield writes rock poetry dealing with death, war, addiction, alienation, corruption, freedom, religion, and other weighty topics. Painting a rainbow of emotions with a deft palette, subtle but not obscure, Hetfield’s lyrics deserve careful attention. A master of narrative, Metallica makes listeners care about a vast array of characters, from a vengeful God, to a suicidal teenager, to a man in mid-life crisis. The Meaning of Metallica is like a riveting conversation with a close friend. A thematic tour de force that traces Hetfield’s lyrical development across the decades, this companion examines everything from deep cuts like “Confusion” to megahits like “Enter Sandman.” Sure to spark debate and discussion, The Meaning of Metallica provides a close reading of lyrics dense with details and rich with allusions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sixth International Financial Cryptography Conference was held during March 11-14, 2002, in Southampton, Bermuda. As is customary at FC, these proceedings represent "final" versions of the papers presented, revised to take into account comments and discussions from the conference. Submissions to the conference were strong, with 74 papers submitted and 19 accepted for presentation and publication. (Regrettably, three of the submit ted papers had to be summarily rejected after it was discovered that they had been improperly submitted in parallel to other conferences.) The small program committee worked very hard under a tight schedule (working through Christmas day) to select the program. No program chair could ask for a better committee; my thanks to everyone for their hard work and dedication. In addition to the refereed papers, the program included a welcome from the Minister of Telecommunications and e-Commerce, Renee Webb, a keynote address by Nigel Hickson, and a panel on privacy tradeoffs cheiired by Rebecca Wright (with panelists Ian Goldberg, Ron Rivest, and Graham Wood). The traditional Tuesday evening "rump session" was skillfully officiated by Markus Jakobsson. My job as program chair was made much, much easier by the excellent work of our general chair, Nicko van Someren, who performed the miracle of hiding from me any evidence of the innumerable logistical nightmares associated with conducting this conference. I have no idea how he did it, but it must have involved many sleepless nights.
