Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now they both must pull together before it’s too late; to either bow at Dragon Eddie’s feet, or join sides to take him down and collect their dues. What the both of them seem to forget is that this is not Eddie’s first pistol showdown at dawn, and neither is it the first time that someone has threatened to take away what is most precious to him. When the smoke clears, it’s hard to tell who’s still standing in this old school versus new school battle. If it is the more experienced man who has seen and done all there is to see and do, who wins. If it’s the newcomer who is full of vigor and short of mercy, who wins. It would be nothing short of a pity and a shame if lovesick Cara Mia is caught in the middle and meets an early fate, all in the name of love and peace. That’s what you get when you’re obsessed with a savage and the sworn enemy of your own father. You’re introduced to more troubles than you can bear, and you’re facing a loaded barrel held in the hand of your own father.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **ONE OF POPSUGAR'S “10 BOOKS BY DEBUT AUTHORS TO WATCH IN 2019”** From a powerful new literary voice, a sweeping epic of one family and the destructive power of the American Dream All their lives, the children of George Benjamin Hill have fought to escape the shadow of their father, a dust-bowl orphan, self-made millionaire in bedrock American capitalism (fast food and oil), and destroyer of two families on his way to financial success. Now, they are approaching middle age and ruin: A failed ex–minor league ballplayer, divorced and mourning the death of his daughter in Miami; a self-proclaimed CIA veteran, off his meds and deciphering conspiracies in Manhattan; a Las Vegas showgirl turned old maid of The Strip, trying to stay clean; and an Alaskan bush pilot, twice un-indicted for manslaughter and recently thrown off his land by the federal government. While their father takes his place at the center of a national scandal, these estranged siblings find themselves drawn from their four corners of the country, compelled along crowded interstates by resentment and confusion, converging on a 300-acre horse ranch outside Omaha for a final confrontation with the father they never had. Migrating from the suburban anonymity of 1950s San Bernardino, to the frozen end of the world (Alaska circa 1976), and concluding in the background of one of the most horrifying moments in American history, The Patricide of George Benjamin Hill spans seventy years of life in America, from the Great Depression to the age of corporate greed and terrorism. It is a literary suspense novel about the decline and consequence of patriarchal society. It is also an intricate family saga of aspiration and betrayal.

Book excerpt: When a mysterious woman showed up at their door after their party guests had all gone home for the evening, no one had any idea who she was. She was young, beautiful, well-dressed, and up to now, had been barred from having any personal contact with them, so it was only natural that they didn’t recognize her. You could have heard a pin drop when she introduced herself as Jan Brewster, the rep who’d been taking care of them behind the scenes from the very beginning. Not only was she finally allowed to make personal contact with them, but the backers had been so impressed by their selfless actions in freeing slaves from the Faranox dimension, that she was granted permission to offer them a very special gift. The serum she carried with her when she arrived granted them not only immortality, but everlasting youth, total recall, rapid healing, enhanced senses, and superior physical abilities. Once the serum takes full effect, the first order of business is to finish training the new recruits, so they can be sent out on some training runs to other dimensions, both known, and unknown. Unfortunately, while out on a training run with Brian, Jarrod runs into a situation that will put their newly granted immortality to the test, and his very survival hangs in the balance. Old enemies return, new discoveries are made, and in the end, they discover that their lives are about to change in ways that they never could have imagined. Immortals is the 5th book of the Unseen Things series.

Book excerpt: A brutally funny, carnivalesque novel about love, death, and survival, from the Czech Republic’s greatest living author Tab, an itinerant Czech actor, travels around Europe on the theater circuit with his partner, Sońa, and their two young sons, attending festivals and performing plays. Confronted with growing resentment toward foreigners, Tab decides to return home to the banks of the Sázava River southeast of Prague. No sooner has he arrived than Tab finds himself falsely accused of a terrible crime and forced to go on the run with his two sons. Over the course of their peregrinations, dodging authorities by car, foot, and raft, they encounter a motley cast of allies and enemies. Tab’s sudden reappearance and just-as-sudden disappearance ripple through the community, catalyzing a chaotic chain of events that reaches a final, raucous crescendo. Hailed as “a picaresque romp of black humor and fantasy” (Times Literary Supplement), this is an unforgettable novel about finding the sparks of humanity even in the bleakest of places, in which love or the longing to find it lie around every bend.

Book Letters to My Father

Download or read book Letters to My Father written by William Styron and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I’ve finally pretty much decided what to write next—a novel based on Nat Turner’s rebellion,” twenty-six-year-old William Styron confided to his father in a letter he wrote on May 1, 1952. Styron would not publish his Pulitzer Prize–winning The Confessions of Nat Turner until 1967, but this letter undercuts those critics who later attacked the writer as an opportunist capitalizing on the heated racial climate of the late 1960s. From 1943 to 1953, Styron wrote over one hundred letters to William C. Styron, Sr., detailing his adventures, his works in progress, and his ruminations on the craft of writing. In Letters to My Father, Styron biographer James L. W. West III collects this correspondence for the first time, revealing the early, intimate thoughts of a young man who was to become a literary icon. Styron wrote his earliest letters from Davidson College, where he was very much unsure of himself and of his prospects in life. By the last few letters, however, he had achieved a great deal: he had earned a commission in the Marine Corps, survived World War II, published the novel Lie Down in Darkness (1951) and the novella The Long March (1953), and won the Prix de Rome. He had also recently married and was about to return to the United States from an expatriate period in Paris and Rome. The letters constitute a portrait of the artist as a young man. They read like an epistolary novel, with movement from location to location and changes in voice and language. Styron was extremely close to his father and quite open with him. His story is a classic one, from youthful insecurity to artistic self-discovery, capped by recognition and success. There are challenges along the way for the hero—poor academic performance, a syphilis scare, writer’s block, temporary frustration in romance. But Styron overcomes these difficulties and emerges as a confident young writer, ready to tackle his next project, the novel Set This House on Fire (1960). Rose Styron, the author’s widow, contributes a prefatory memoir of the senior Styron. West has provided comprehensive annotations to the correspondence, and the volume also has several illustrations, including facsimiles of some of the letters, which survive among Styron’s papers at Duke University. Finally, there is a selection of Styron’s apprentice fiction from the late 1940s and early 1950s. In all of American literature, no other extended series of such letters—son to father—exists. Letters to My Father offers a unique glimpse into the formative years of one of the most admired and controversial writers of his time.
