Book Ceramic Matrix Composites

Download or read book Ceramic Matrix Composites written by I M Low and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-25 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of engineering-designed polymer matrix composites in the late 1940s has provided an impetus for the emergence of sophisticated ceramic matrix composites. The development of CMCs is a promising means of achieving lightweight, structural materials combining high temperature strength with improved fracture toughness, damage tolerance and thermal shock resistance. Considerable research effort is being expended in the optimisation of ceramic matrix composite systems, with particular emphasis being placed on the establishment of reliable and cost-effective fabrication procedures. Ceramic matrix composites consists of a collection of chapters reviewing and describing the latest advances, challenges and future trends in the microstructure and property relationship of five areas of CMCs. Part one focuses on fibre, whisker and particulate-reinforced ceramic matrix composites, part two explores graded and layered ceramics, while the five chapters in part three cover nanostructured CMCs in some detail. Refractory and speciality ceramic composites are looked at in part four, with chapters on magnesia-spinel composite refractory materials, thermal shock of CMCs and superplastic CMCs. Finally, part four is dedicated to non-oxide ceramic composites. Ceramic matrix composites is a comprehensive evaluation of all aspects of the interdependence of processing, microstructure, properties and performance of each of the five categories of CMC, with chapters from experienced and established researchers. It will be essential for researchers and engineers in the field of ceramics and more widely, in the field of inorganic materials. Looks at the latest advances, challenges and future trends Compiled by experienced and established researchers in the field Essential for researchers and engineers

Book Plastic Deformation of Ceramics

Download or read book Plastic Deformation of Ceramics written by R.C. Bradt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 661 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proceedings volume, "Plastic Deformation of Ceramics," constitutes the papers of an international symposium held at Snowbird, Utah from August 7-12, 1994. It was attended by nearly 100 scientists and engineers from more than a dozen countries representing academia, national laboratories, and industry. Two previous conferences on this topic were held at The Pennsylvania State University in 1974 and 1983. Therefore, the last major international conference focusing on the deformation of ceramic materials was held more than a decade ago. Since the early 1980s, ceramic materials have progressed through an evolutionary period of development and advancement. They are now under consideration for applications in engineering structures. The contents of the previous conferences indicate that considerable effort was directed towards a basic understanding of deformation processes in covalently bonded or simple oxide ceramics. However, now, more than a decade later, the focus has completely shifted. In particular, the drive for more efficient heat engines has resulted in the development of silicon-based ceramics and composite ceramics. The discovery of high-temperature cupric oxide-based superconductors has created a plethora of interesting perovskite-Iike structured ceramics. Additionally, nanophase ceramics, ceramic thin films, and various forms of toughened ceramics have potential applications and, hence, their deformation has been investigated. Finally, new and exciting areas of research have attracted interest since 1983, including fatigue, nanoindentation techniques, and superplasticity.

Book Influence of Alumina on the Structure and Mechanical Properties of Yttria Stabilized Zirconia Composites

Download or read book Influence of Alumina on the Structure and Mechanical Properties of Yttria Stabilized Zirconia Composites written by R. C. Buchanan and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composite structure of yttria (4.5 wt%) stabilized zirconia (YSZ) with added Al2O3 (0.3-7.5 wt%) have been investigated. They show fracture toughness (KIc) and strength (MOR) values in excess of 9.0 MPa X the square root of M and 500 MPa respectively more than twice that normally reported for YSZ samples of like composition. Starting materials used were floated Al2O3 and precipitated YSZ powders (approx. 99.9% purity) of average partical size 0.03 micrometers. The powders were washed, dispersed, ball milled, spray dried, dry pressed and the resultant compacts sintered at 1300 C/8 h. Microstructures obtained were of uniform grain size (0.2-0.4 micrometers) with discrete Al2O3 inclusions, approximately the same size as the YSZ grains, dispersed throughout the composite structure. The strengthening mechanism involved dissipation of strain energy by plastic deformation of the Al2O3 inclusions in the YSZ matrix. Variation in the mechanical properties and structure of the composite as a function of added Al2O3 was correlated with DC conductivity, X-ray diffraction and lattice parameter data. The X-ray data showed splitting of the main peaks indicating a primarily tetragonal phase. Lattice parameter changes with increasing Al2O3 were attributed to direct substitution of Al(3+) for Zr(4+) ions at low Al2O3 (0.325 wt%) content resulting in increased oxygen vacancies, higher conductivity and lower activation energy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the fatigue properties of structural materials used for the production of ceramics. It explains the cyclic deformation and how failures occur by fatigue. Dislocations related to fatigue are examined. The way that fatigue induces structural changes in material undergoing cyclic deformation is explained as well. A special chapter considers the importance of environmental effects on fatigue. Surface treatment such as shot pinning, sand blasting and laser treatment are described. The book explains how design should be carried out considering all the major factors leading to reduced fatigue resistance.

It aids continued research and development of these materials and as such it is a critical information resource to academics and industry professionals facing the technological challenges of the future. Hard materials operate at the leading edge of technology, and continued research and development of such materials is critical to meet the technological challenges of the future. Users of this work can improve their knowledge of basic principles and gain a better understanding of process/structure/property relationships. With the convergence of nanotechnology, coating techniques, and functionally graded materials to the cognitive science of cemented carbides, cermets, advanced ceramics, super-hard materials and composites, it is evident that the full potential of this class of materials is far from exhausted. This work unites these important areas of research and will provide useful insights to users through its extensive cross-referencing and thematic presentation. To link academic to industrial usage of hard materials and vice versa, this work deals with the production, uses and properties of the carbides, nitrides and borides of these metals and those of titanium, as well as tools of ceramics, the superhard boron nitrides and diamond and related compounds.
