Book Creep as a Surface Dependent Phenomenon

Download or read book Creep as a Surface Dependent Phenomenon written by Milton R. Pickus and published by . This book was released on 1950* with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative creep tests have been described for single crystal and polycrystalline zinc, with and without the presence of a surface layer containing electrodeposited copper. For polycrystalline zinc, neither the creep rate at constant temperature and load, nor the temperature dependence of the creep rate at constant load was affected by the presence of copper in the surface layer. The single crystals, on the other hand, showed a marked increase in the resistance to creep as a result of the electrodeposited copper layer. The copper also caused an increase in the temperature dependence of the creep rate, suggesting that a higher activation energy is required to generate dislocations when copper is present in the surface layer. A study was made of the steady state creep behavior of 'A' nickel in different environments and surface conditions. It was found that resistance to high temperature creep was much greater in air than in either purified hydrogen or nitrogen. The presence of tungsten in the surface layer did not affect the resistance to creep. In regard to the temperature dependence of steady state creep, 'A' nickel was found to be insensitive to conditions at the surface. An important conclusion resulting from this work is the fact that under certain conditions, creep is a surface dependent phenomenon.

Book Investigation of a Full scale Cascade type Thrust Reverser

Download or read book Investigation of a Full scale Cascade type Thrust Reverser written by Robert C. Kohl and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A double set of turning vanes was carried inside the jet tailpipe. To produce reverse thrust, the tailpipe opens into two side sections and the turning vanes move outward to form a V-shaped cascade, which deflects the exhaust-gas flow. Forward and reverse net thrust were measured over a range of engine speeds with the airplane stationary. Taxi tests were made to determine the comparative stopping distances using wheel braking and reverse thrust separately, and a combination of both. The effect of turning-vane spacing on thrust-reverser performance was determined by scale-model tests using unheated air.

Book excerpt: In this volume, soil creep is analysed within the framework of other soil-rheological phenomena, such as stress relaxation and long-term resistance, to present an in-depth discussion of the effect of time on soil behaviour. As time is the only state parameter which cannot be entirely modelled in the laboratory, the presented extrapolation is based upon a combination of appropriate theoretical analysis, and the principles of the physical behaviour of soils affected by state parameters such as porosity, water content, stress, strain, time and temperature. Principal macro- and microrheological theories are analysed, and a comprehensive picture of the soil structure and of the effect of state parameters is presented, documented by the author's experiments and illustrated by many examples. The theory of hereditary creep was selected as the best theory serving the author's purpose to propose simple constitutive relations governing creep of soils. The proposed constitutive relations have been implemented into FEM programs and the effect of the time factor has been demonstrated by the solution of such boundary value problems as a dams and underground tunnels. This volume should be of interest to civil engineers, scientists, research and postgraduate students, and advanced undergraduates.
