Book Evaluation of Low Cycle Creep Fatigue Degradation for Notched Components

Download or read book Evaluation of Low Cycle Creep Fatigue Degradation for Notched Components written by Tait RA and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four approaches have been examined to predict the endurance of circumferentially notched, uniaxially loaded test pieces subjected to fully reversed strain-controlled cyclic loading at elevated temperatures. Results are compared with uniaxial data derived from smooth test pieces. The strain-time waveforms include both trapezoidal and triangular shapes to distinguish between fatigue and fatigue-creep damage. The four materials investigated are HP-45 (1144 K), Incoloy 800H (1144 K), Incoloy 800 (922 K), and 11⁄4Cr-1⁄2Mo (811 K). The analysis has reflected the various degrees of cyclic hardening and creep deformation exhibited by these materials. The predictive approaches include Neuber notch strain analysis and finite element analyses to identify the maximum plastic strain range, the equivalent plastic strain range, and the total plastic work per cycle.

Book Creep Fatigue and Environmental Response of Alloy 800H Tested at 900 Degrees C

Download or read book Creep Fatigue and Environmental Response of Alloy 800H Tested at 900 Degrees C written by David Michael Leet and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creep and creep rupture studies have been carried out at 900$spcirc$C in lab air and in vacuum on Alloy 800H. Three different notch acuities were chosen so that the effect of stress intensity on the rupture lifetimes could be examined. The effect of oxidation on the creep rupture lifetimes has also been examined using reduced section modelling and vacuum testing of pre-oxidized specimens. Tests in oxidizing environments were found to have similar, but somewhat shorter failure lives compared to vacuum exposure. This effect is accentuated in the low stress notched specimen tests where the stress concentration and oxidation can act together most effectively to reduce failure life. A direct current potential drop technique was utilized to monitor in situ creep strain. A high speed data acquisition system was employed to collect and transform the direct current potential drop data. This methodology was found to provide accurate measurements of creep strain even in notched specimens. A finite difference method was developed to perform second derivative analysis of the creep curves. This technique showed that it is possible to quantitatively identify the end points of the various creep stages as well as to identify crack initiation and crack advance events. High resolution electron metallography was performed on the creep and creep rupture specimens, and a finite element analysis of smooth and notched specimens was used, in conjunction with this microstructural data, to aid in the interpretation of the smooth and notched specimen failures.

Book Life Prediction Techniques for Analyzing Creep Fatigue Interaction in Advanced Nickel Base Superalloys

Download or read book Life Prediction Techniques for Analyzing Creep Fatigue Interaction in Advanced Nickel Base Superalloys written by M. N. Menon and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ON THE BASIS OF THE LIMITED DATA THAT ARE PRESENTED IN THIS STUDY, IT MAY BE CONCLUDED THAT THE EFFECT OF CREEP DAMAGE ON THE LOW CYCLE FATIGUE BEHAVIOR OF Rene 95 at 1200 F is not very severe. This is probably because of the good stress rupture properties of the material at this temperature. Strain Range Partitioning approach does not seem to hold much promise for analyzing, and therefore, for predicting strain controlled low cycle fatigue behavior of Rene 95 under creep-fatigue conditions at 1200 F. When compared to the SRP approach, the Frequency Modified approach appears less cumbersome and, hence, more advantageous. The present study indicates, however, that the FM approach using the frequencies calculated on the basis of the actual cycles holds only a slight edge over that involving unmodified inelastic strain range versus cyclic life representation. At present, the damage approach proposed by Ostergren seems to offer more potential as it takes into account the aspect of loop shift that accompanies fatigue cycling of Rene 95.

Book excerpt: Dr Theodore Nicholas ran the High Cycle Fatigue Program for the US Air Force between 1995 and 2003 at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and is one of the world’s leading authorities on the subject, having authored over 250 papers in leading archival journals and books. Bringing his plethora of expertise to this book, Dr Nicholas discusses the subject of high cycle fatigue (HCF) from an engineering viewpoint in response to a series of HCF failures in the USAF and the concurrent realization that HCF failures in general were taking place universally in both civilian and military engines. Topic covered include: Constant life diagrams Fatigue limits under combined LCF and HCF Notch fatigue under HCF conditions Foreign object damage (FOD) Brings years of the Author's US Air Force experience in high cycle fatigue together in one text Discusses HCF in the context of recent international military and civilian engine failures
