Book Handbook of Counselor Preparation

Download or read book Handbook of Counselor Preparation written by Garrett McAuliffe and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2010-12 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in cooperation with the Association of Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) This definitive single-volume guide is the first of its kind on teaching and developing counselor educator programs that embrace constructivist and developmental theory. Leading scholars and experts offer practical advice on teaching courses in every area of counseling practice. As a result, the book is ideal for current and future counselor educators and supervisors as well as faculty in other helping professions. The authors seek to inspire educators to empower and involve, to risk "losing control" over subject matter, to hear student voices, to pose dilemmas, and to challenge their own assumptions in the presence of their students using constructivist, developmental, and experiential thinking and strategies. Key Features: Coverage of the foundations of constructivist and developmental teaching in Part One includes the pedagogies of the classic thinkers in the teaching field, namely John Dewey, Lawrence Kohlberg, and David Kolb, explicit guidelines for teaching, the phases of counselor development, and a primer on six common teaching strategies. Carefully-crafted guides for teaching in 17 content areas in the counselor education curriculum provide readers with practical "how to" information. Innovative ideas for counselor education in Part Three offer readers keys to evaluating outcomes in counselor education, expanding technology in the field, and boldly infusing narrative theory into counselor education. Exercises in constructivist, developmental, and experiential approaches appear in chapters to give readers an opportunity to apply what they have just learned.

Book excerpt: Money-related stress dates as far back as concepts of money itself. Formerly it may have waxed and waned in tune with the economy, but today more individuals are experiencing financial mental anguish and self-destructive behavior regardless of bull or bear markets, recessions or boom periods. From a fringe area of psychology, financial therapy has emerged to meet increasingly salient concerns. Financial Therapy is the first full-length guide to the field, bridging theory, practical methods, and a growing cross-disciplinary evidence base to create a framework for improving this crucial aspect of clients' lives. Its contributors identify money-based disorders such as compulsive buying, financial hoarding, and workaholism, and analyze typical early experiences and the resulting mental constructs ("money scripts") that drive toxic relationships with money. Clearly relating financial stability to larger therapeutic goals, therapists from varied perspectives offer practical tools for assessment and intervention, advise on cultural and ethical considerations, and provide instructive case studies. A diverse palette of research-based and practice-based models meets monetary mental health issues with well-known treatment approaches, among them: Cognitive-behavioral and solution-focused therapies. Collaborative relationship models. Experiential approaches. Psychodynamic financial therapy. Feminist and humanistic approaches. Stages of change and motivational interviewing in financial therapy. A text that serves to introduce and define the field as well as plan for its future, Financial Therapy is an important investment for professionals in psychotherapy and counseling, family therapy, financial planning, and social policy.

Book Prebankruptcy Credit Counseling

Download or read book Prebankruptcy Credit Counseling written by Noreen Clancy and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2007 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 provided new requirements for bankruptcy filers and gave the U.S. Trustee Program (USTP) new areas of responsibility. One new requirement is that any individual filer must have received credit counseling during the 180 days before filing. USTP must develop measures of credit-counseling agency effectiveness, then apply those criteria to decide whether to reapprove those agencies. Complicating the effectiveness issue is the increased use of Internet-based credit counseling and whether the mode of delivery influences the counseling's adequacy and effectiveness. USTP asked RAND for help in examining what constitutes effective prebankruptcy credit counseling and how to measure it. The authors concluded that USTP should first explicitly identify the goals of prebankruptcy credit counseling; that there are no common standards or accepted sets of metrics for USTP to adopt in whole; and that there are no accepted views on the various modes of delivery. They recommend that USTP use certain upcoming reports to inform the process of developing measures of effectiveness and approving or reapproving credit-counseling agencies; that it consider whether an agency up for reapproval is providing the services stated in its initial approval application, as well as any pre- and post-testing that the agency conducts; that it survey prebankruptcy credit counselors; that it choose a few measures of effectiveness; and that it take some debtor characteristics into account when measuring agency effectiveness.
