Book Child Labor Income Shocks and Access to Credit

Download or read book Child Labor Income Shocks and Access to Credit written by Rajeev Harsha Dehejia and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although a growing theoretical literature points to credit constraints as an important source of inefficiently high child labor, little work has been done to assess its empirical relevance. Using panel data from Tanzania, Beegle, Dehejia, and Gatti find that households respond to transitory income shocks by increasing child labor, but that the extent to which child labor is used as a buffer is lower when households have access to credit. These findings contribute to the empirical literature on the permanent income hypothesis by showing that credit-constrained households actively use child labor to smooth their income. Moreover, they highlight a potentially important determinant of child labor and, as a result, a mechanism that can be used to tackle it. This paper--a joint product of the Poverty Team and Investment and Climate, Development Research Group--is part of a larger effort in the group to study the determinants of child labor. It is output from the research project "Child Labor and Access to Credit: Evidence from Rural Tanzania and Vietnam" funded by the Bank's Research Support Budget.

Book excerpt: This paper looks at the relationship between parents' access to credit and children's labor. The study uses national household survey data for Guatemala that includes child labor statistics alongside information regarding applications for loans to more accurately measure the overall effect of access to credit on child labor. The findings point to a relationship between household access to credit and children's likelihood and propensity to work. Children in households that have access to credit are less likely to work and tend to work fewer hours than those in households without access to credit. These results lend support to the idea that increasing access to credit can be an important part of reducing child labor. In addition, the study also suggests a relationship between household applications for loans and child labor. Those households that apply for loans are more likely to have children working than those households that do not suggesting that services and education should be targeted to those applying for loans.

Book excerpt: Even though access to credit is central to child labor theoretically, little work has been done to assess its importance empirically. Dehejia and Gatti examine the link between access to credit and child labor at a cross-country level. The authors measure child labor as a country aggregate, and proxy credit constraints by the level of financial market development. These two variables display a strong negative (unconditional) relationship. The authors show that even after they control for a wide range of variables-including GDP per capita, urbanization, initial child labor, schooling, fertility, legal institutions, inequality, and openness-this relationship remains strong and statistically significant. Moreover, they find that, in the absence of developed financial markets, households resort to child labor to cope with income variability. This evidence suggests that policies aimed at increasing households' access to credit could be effective in reducing child labor.

Book The Economics of Child Labour in the Era of Globalization

Download or read book The Economics of Child Labour in the Era of Globalization written by Sarbajit Chaudhuri and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children in poor countries are subjected to exploitation characterized by low wages and long hours of work, as well as by unclean, unhygienic and unsafe working and living conditions, and, more importantly, by deprivation from education, all of which hampers their physical and mental development. Child labour is a complex issue, and clearly it has no simple solution. This book sheds some understanding of its root causes. The book attempts to delve into many of the important theoretical aspects of child labour and suggests policies that could indeed be useful in dealing with the problem under diverse situations using alternative multisector general equilibrium models.

Book Child Labor in America

Download or read book Child Labor in America written by William G. Whittaker and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of child labour in America is long and, in some cases, unsavoury. It dates back to the founding of the United States. Traditionally, most children, except for the privileged few, had always worked -- either for their parents or for an outside employer. Through the years, child labour practices have changed -- and so have the benefits and risks associated with employment of children. In some respects, altered workplace technology has served to make work easier and less hazardous. At the same time, some processes and equipment have rendered the workplace more dangerous -- especially for the very young. Child labour first became a federal legislative issue at least as far back as 1906 with the introduction of the Beveridge proposal for regulation of the types of work in which children might be engaged. Although the 1906 legislation was not adopted, it led to extended study of the conditions under which children were employed or allowed to work and to a series of legislative proposals -- some approved, others defeated or overturned by the courts -- culminating in the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) of 1938. The latter statute, amended periodically, remains the primary federal law dealing with the employment of children. Although providing a framework for regulation of child labour (and, in some cases, forbidding it entirely), the FLSA is not comprehensive, nor does it deal with all employment of children in precisely the same way. Generally speaking, work by young persons (under 18 years of age) in mines and factories is not allowed. What other types of work may be suitable (or especially hazardous) for persons under 18 years of age has been left to the discretion of the Secretary of Labour. Some types of work -- for example, some newspaper sales and delivery, theatrical (and related) employment -- fall beyond the scope of FLSA child labour requirements. Finally, a distinction has been made between employment in non-agricultural fields and in agriculture -- and, in the latter case, between work for a parent or guardian in an agricultural setting and commercial employment. This book sketches the early history of child labour regulation and reviews certain recent federal initiatives in that area and discusses child labour legislation.
