Book excerpt: Creativity and critical thinking are key skills for complex, globalised and increasingly digitalised economies and societies. While teachers and education policy makers consider creativity and critical thinking as important learning goals, it is still unclear to many what it means to develop these skills in a school setting. To make it more visible and tangible to practitioners, the OECD worked with networks of schools and teachers in 11 countries to develop and trial a set of pedagogical resources that exemplify what it means to teach, learn and make progress in creativity and critical thinking in primary and secondary education.

Book Critical Thinking Through Creative Thinking

Download or read book Critical Thinking Through Creative Thinking written by Mary Bozik and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Findings have revealed that mastering any kind of knowledge requires both creativity and critical skills, while early stages of learning require simple memorization of rules. Both the "soft" thinking behaviors of creative thinking (such as dreams and fantasies) and the "hard" behaviors of critical thinking (such as reason and reality) are needed to solve complex problems. Thus, to encourage creative as well as critical thinking in speech classes, educators must take care to create classroom environments conducive to both kinds of thought. A nonthreatening atmosphere, emphasis on communication, and liberal doses of humor all support higher level thinking skills. A system of motivating rewards (for instance, showing how learning a skill connects with the students' lives) is also beneficial. Positive teacher attitudes, a belief that students can foster their own learning, and encouragement of classroom communication are other ways to help speech communication students develop creative and critical thinking skills. Book Critical Condition

    Book Details:
  • Author : Patrick Finn
  • Publisher : Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press
  • Release : 2015-06-18
  • ISBN : 1771121599
  • Pages : 219 pages

Download or read book Critical Condition written by Patrick Finn and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2015-06-18 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should we stop teaching critical thinking? Meant as a prompt to further discussion, Critical Condition questions the assumption that every student should be turned into a “critical thinker.” The book starts with the pre-Socratics and the impact that Socrates’ death had on his student Plato and traces the increasingly violent use of critical “attack” on a perceived opponent. From the Roman militarization of debate to the medieval Church’s use of defence as a means of forcing confession and submission, the early phases of critical thinking were bound up in a type of attack that Finn suggests does not best serve intellectual inquiry. Recent developments have seen critical thinking become an ideology rather than a critical practice, with levels of debate devolving to the point where most debate becomes ad hominem. Far from arguing that we abandon critical inquiry, the author suggests that we emphasize a more open, loving system of engagement that is not only less inherently violent but also more robust when dealing with vastly more complex networks of information. This book challenges long-held beliefs about the benefits of critical thinking, which is shown to be far too linear to deal with the twenty-first century world. Critical Condition is a call to action unlike any other.

Book A Guide to Effective Business Communication and Creative Critical Thinking

Download or read book A Guide to Effective Business Communication and Creative Critical Thinking written by Dennis Onyama and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-09-20 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book emphasizes the dynamic interplay between effective business communication and creative critical thinking and their complements - as a viably sustainable option to leverage the hidden powers of information packaging. The interaction of business communication and creative thinking is so pervasive that separating business communication from creative thinking makes business communication ineffective. Also, creative ideas would hardly see the end of the tunnel if the ideas are not properly packaged and effectively communicated to those that matter. Thus, separating the two will virtually handicap each of them, and both of them. As a result, organizational performance will suffer major setbacks, and by extension profit margin could drop significantly. Think of communication technologies like voice technologies, for example voice synthesis, voice recognition, and podcasting; virtual agents such as chat-bots; mobile communication like Global Positioning System (GPS); networking advances such as peer-to-peer (P2P); wireless networking such as Wi-Fi technology; and short messaging services (SMS). In all these, we can observe that undeniably, even as technologies continue to advance, anyone who has used a computer knows that the benefits of technology are not automatic. For instance, to communicate effectively, you need to keep technology in perspective, use technological tools productively, and disengage from the computer frequently to communicate in person. This tells us that technology is an aid to interpersonal communication, not a replacement for it. Technology can't think for you, communicate for you, or make up for a lack of essential skills. The spellchecker in your word processor is a great example. It's happy to run all your words through the dictionary, but it doesn't know whether you're using the correct words or the best words possible. Consequently, the sheer number of possibilities in many technological tools can also get in the way of successful communication. Therefore, by focusing on your message and your audience, you can avoid falling into the trap of letting technology get in the way of successful communication. Obviously, this requires creative critical thinking to empower communication to be effective. That being said, this book observes that effective business communication and creative critical thinking are two sides of the same coin. As it goes, on one side of the coin, it takes effective business communication to leverage the ultimate or hidden powers of creative thinking. Meanwhile, on the other side of the coin, in order for creative thinking to be successfully leveraged, so that the intangibles of creative thinking ideas can be transformed into tangibles (commercial reality), it requires effective business communication skills to organize the bits and pieces of information that would collectively make sense to those that matter for the ideas to become a viable commercial reality. Honestly, many books have been written in the domain of business communication. Many other books have been written on creative thinking. Still, many other books have been written on information management. But this book is incredibly versatile in its approach. Firstly, it tackles effective business communication, not just business communication as traditionally expressed. Secondly, it treats creative thinking within a novelty of creative critical thinking. Thirdly, it goes beyond the traditional information management perspective, and delves into unveiling some great potentials, inherent in the hidden powers of information packaging. Finally, it blends the three combinations into a holistic approach. Guess what! This approach is HEADING toward resolving some of the most salient issues - spotted in the light of the ever increasing interdisciplinary challenges confronting the world today.

Book Handbook of Research on Barriers for Teaching 21st Century Competencies and the Impact of Digitalization

Download or read book Handbook of Research on Barriers for Teaching 21st Century Competencies and the Impact of Digitalization written by Dhir, Harpreet Kaur and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-06-25 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need to develop 21st-century competencies has received global recognition, but instructional methods have not been reformed to include the teaching of these skills. Multiple frameworks include creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration as the foundational competencies. Complexities of planning curriculum and delivering instruction to develop the foundational competencies requires professional training. However, despite training, instructional practice can be impacted by barriers caused by personal views of teachers, economic constraints, access to resources, social challenges, pandemic, overwhelming pace of global shifts, and other influences. With digitalization entering the field of education, it is unclear if technology has helped in removing or eliminating the barriers or has, itself, become another obstruction in integrating the competencies. Gaining an educator's perspective is essential to understanding the barriers as well as solutions to mitigate the impediments through innovative instructional methods being practiced across the globe via digital or non-digital platforms. The need for original contributions from educators exists in this area of barriers to 21st-century education and the role of digitalization. The Handbook of Research on Barriers for Teaching 21st-Century Competencies and the Impact of Digitalization discusses teaching the 21st-century competencies, namely critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication. This book presents both the problems or gaps causing barriers and brings forth practical solutions, digital and non-digital, to meet the educational shifts. The chapters will determine the specific barriers that exist, whether political, social, economic, or technological, to integrating competencies and the methods or strategies that can eliminate these barriers through compatible instructional approaches. Additionally, the chapters provide knowledge on the impacts of digitalization in general on teaching and learning and how digital innovations are either beneficial to removing impediments for students or rather causing obstructions in integrating the four competencies. This book is ideally intended for educators and administrators working directly with students, educational researchers, educational software developers, policymakers, teachers, practitioners, and students interested in how 21st-century competencies can be taught while facing the impacts of digitalization on education.

Book Transforming Schools

  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing

  • ISBN : 1474232604
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Transforming Schools written by Miranda Jefferson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-09 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transforming Schools demonstrates how transformation is no longer an option in teaching and learning - it has become a necessity. Changes in the way we work and the challenges of issues such as climate change, poverty and migration mean that teaching and learning need to alter to incorporate capacities that will help us meet those challenges. The 4Cs: Creativity, Critical Reflection, Communication and Collaboration have long been present in education, but Transforming Schools demonstrates how schools can change teaching and leadership to embed and enact the 4Cs to make them central to dynamic and exciting learning. Miranda Jefferson and Michael Anderson demonstrate how a renewed approach to teaching that integrates the 4Cs can better equip today's learners. They draw on their own international research and experiences in school transformation in a variety of school settings, working in partnership with practitioners, researchers, students and the community. The authors consider how schools might reorganise themselves to become more relevant to their students and to the community. Practical strategies for transformation are included throughout the chapters to demonstrate how learning can be supported and how the 4Cs can be made explicit in schools. These examples will support school leadership teams and teachers to explicitly teach the 4Cs in relevant and challenging ways. This book is essential reading for those looking to transform schools and more effectively meet the needs of today's learners.
