(upper-intermediate) Nowadays Many EFL Students are in search of more conversational ways to pick up the English language. Mainly because of the importance of bringing into practice what they learn. Instead you want to be involved in the classroom, interact with your classmates, as well as practice real life situations. One of the best ways to do that is to create truly personalized Role-playing activities. Role playing has many beneficial characteristics, and especially in the EFL classroom. Book Rethinking Linguistic Creativity in Non native Englishes

Download or read book Rethinking Linguistic Creativity in Non native Englishes written by Sandra C. Deshors and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-07-19 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when the paradigm gap (Sridhar & Sridhar 1986) between the EFL and ESL research areas is attracting much scholarly attention, the contributions in the current volume explore this gap from the perspective of linguistic innovations across the two different types of non-native Englishes. In this endeavour, this volume unveils the many facets of linguistic innovations in non-native English varieties and explores the fine line between learners’ erroneous versus creative use of a target language. Adopting empirical, corpus-based approaches to portray linguistic innovations characteristic of EFL and ESL varieties, the contributions show how the interaction of linguistic and social forces influences the development of novel linguistic forms in both endonormative ESL contexts and exonormative EFL contexts. This volume is of relevance to linguists who are interested in the features of non-native English and who wish to gain a better understanding of the nature of innovations along the EFL – ESL continuum.Originally published as a special issue of International Journal of Learner Corpora Research 2:2 (2016).

Book Metaphors in Learner English

Download or read book Metaphors in Learner English written by Susan Nacey and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-15 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents results from a corpus-based investigation into the metaphorical production of foreign language learners, comparing texts written by Norwegian (L2) learners of English with those written by British (L1) students. Three types of questions are addressed. The first has empirically measured answers: For example, do L2 English writers produce more metaphors than L1 novice writers? How frequent are novel metaphors in an L2, as compared with an L1? The second type has more subjective answers: How creatively do L2 English learners employ metaphor? Are they even expected to be able to produce metaphor at all? The third type combines theoretical and methodological perspectives: How is metaphorical creativity identified? What is the potential role of metaphoric competence? Most importantly, how are metaphors identified? To this end, the newly-developed ‘Metaphor Identification Procedure’ is tested and critiqued. This book is intended for metaphor researchers, corpus linguists, applied linguists and language educators.

Book Creativity and Learning in Secondary English

Download or read book Creativity and Learning in Secondary English written by Andrew McCallum and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creativity in secondary English lessons today is a democratically conceived quality that all pupils are expected to achieve and a resource on which all are entitled to draw. But what exactly is creativity? And how does it relate to English? Creativity and Learning in Secondary English answers these questions, and others, by arguing for a version of creativity that sees it as an ordinary, everyday part of successful classroom practice, central to processes of meaning-making, dialogic interaction and textual engagement. In this construction, creativity is not just linked to learning; it is the driving force behind learning itself, offering pupils the opportunity to transform their knowledge and understanding of the world around them. This book borrows from a range of theories about creativity and about learning, while remaining largely practical in focus. It contains numerous examples for teachers of how to apply ideas about creativity in the classroom. In doing so, it attempts to maintain the subject’s core identity while also keeping abreast of contemporary social, pedagogical and technological developments. The result is a refreshing challenge to some of the more mundane approaches to English teaching on offer in an age focussed excessively on standardisation and teaching to tests. Practical applications of creativity include: Using picture books and graphic novels to stimulate multimodal responses Placing pupils in the role of the teacher Devising marketing campaigns for class novels Adopting experimental approaches to redrafting Encouraging ‘extreme’ forms of re-creative writing Focusing on how to ‘listen’ to texts Creating sound-scapes for poems Thought-provoking and provocative, this textbook draws on current best practice in English teaching and will equip trainee and practising teachers with a wide range of strategies that will lead to greater creativity in the classroom.
