Book Sensory Being for Sensory Beings

Download or read book Sensory Being for Sensory Beings written by Joanna Grace and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sensory-being: the enveloping of natural presentness and awareness in an unfolding sensory moment. Sensory Beings: people whose experience of the world, and meaning within it, is primarily sensory. Often these are people who do not have access to language. If you support someone who understands the world in a primarily sensory way, for example someone with PMLD or later stage dementia, you will recognise that they often face periods of time in which they are left without an activity they can access. This unique, practical guide helps you to plan and deliver sensory activities that lead people into a calm, focused state. You are even invited to let the person you support lead you into a state of sensory focus. Written by a leading sensory specialist this book will help you to: View the world as the person you support may view it, and identify times when a sensory-being activity may be appropriate. Understand how to select and create the most engaging, low cost, sensory foci to suit the specific needs of the individuals in your care. Effectively facilitate sensory-being sessions from start to finish so that the people you care for receive the full and many benefits of calm, focused time. Tried and tested in a diverse range of settings prior to publication, these techniques and practical tools have already helped many people provide an enriched experience of life for those in their care. Book Sensory Affect Learning Spaces and Design Education

Download or read book Sensory Affect Learning Spaces and Design Education written by Lorraine Marshalsey and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-10 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the lens of sensory affect, this book offers a new way of thinking about day-to-day teaching and student engagement within learning spaces in design education. The book examines the definitions, concepts, ideas, and overlaps of a repertoire of learning spaces prevalent in higher education and addresses the pedagogical gap that exists between broader learning structures and spaces, and the requirements of specialist design education. Recognising that mainstream teaching environments impact upon design studio learning and student engagement, the book positions creative learning spaces at the heart of practice-based learning. It defines the underlying pedagogical philosophy of a creative learning space in design education and reports on how practical strategies incorporating sensory affect may be implemented by educators to foster better student engagement in these spaces within higher education. Bringing much-needed attention to specialist design teaching and learning spaces in higher education, this book will be of interest to educators, researchers, and post-graduate students immersed in design education, pedagogy, and learning spaces more broadly.

Book Sharing Sensory Stories and Conversations with People with Dementia

Download or read book Sharing Sensory Stories and Conversations with People with Dementia written by Joanna Grace and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2018-05-21 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sensory Stories contain just a few lines of text, and are brought to life through a selection of meaningful sensory experiences. They have been found to be highly effective in helping care for people with dementia, and can enable them to engage with their memories, life history and more, in a way that would otherwise not be possible. Despite these benefits, there is very little guidance on how to incorporate this approach in everyday care. This book looks at how sensory engagement can help someone with dementia feel safe and secure, minimise their anxieties, support their cognitive abilities, as well as other benefits. Full of practical advice, this book provides everything you need to put Sensory Stories into practice. Written at a level suitable for both family members and practitioners, this innovative book will be invaluable for anyone supporting a person with dementia.

Book Sensory Architecture

Download or read book Sensory Architecture written by Heather Holz and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This design thesis will address the question: how do combinations of our senses influence the way we interact with our surrounding built environment? The typology chosen to evaluate this question is an addition to an existing museum. The claim to this thesis question is as follows,?A built environment can raise an occupant?s consciousness and awareness by revealing how the senses respond to that environment.? The direction of this research will be guided by the theoretical premise/unifying idea:?The built environment can trigger and or stimulate the senses, creating a more holistic experience of one?s surroundings.? In justification of this project,?As humans, we are visually dominant creatures and it is important that we as designers address, not only this visual sense, but all of the senses, for people experience a space or environment with different sensory strengths, and this differentiates their experience and or understanding of that space.? The narrative looks at the significance of the project and addresses why we as designers need to look at how our building designs engage our senses and acknowledge more than just our visual sense. The project client is the Chicago Park District and the main users will be students and teachers, tourists, Chicago citizens, as well as employees and volunteers. The major project elements of this museum are: exhibits, a restaurant, entry, education spaces, multipurpose amphitheater, offices and small conference rooms. The site of this project is the Museum Campus in Chicago, Illinois, which is on the lakefront of Lake Michigan. The project emphasis is to look at how the built environment triggers and stimulates our different senses. Research for this project will be completed for the unifying idea, project typology, historical context, site analysis as well as programmatic requirements. The process of this thesis design will be preserved and compiled in a thesis book which will be accessible in the digital repository.

Book Creating Brain Like Intelligence

Download or read book Creating Brain Like Intelligence written by Bernhard Sendhoff and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-03-13 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TheInternationalSymposiumCreatingBrain-LikeIntelligencewasheldinFeb- ary 2007 in Germany. The symposium brought together notable scientists from di?erent backgrounds and with di?erent expertise related to the emerging ?eld of brain-like intelligence. Our understanding of the principles behind brain-like intelligence is still limited. After all, we have had to acknowledge that after tremendous advances in areas like neural networks, computational and arti?cial intelligence (a ?eld that had just celebrated its 50 year anniversary) and fuzzy systems, we are still not able to mimic even the lower-level sensory capabilities of humans or animals. We asked what the biggest obstacles are and how we could gain ground toward a scienti?c understanding of the autonomy, ?exibility, and robustness of intelligent biological systems as they strive to survive. New principles are usually found at the interfaces between existing disciplines, and traditional boundaries between disciplines have to be broken down to see how complex systems become simple and how the puzzle can be assembled. During the symposium we could identify some recurring themes that p- vaded many of the talks and discussions. The triad of structure, dynamics and environment, theroleoftheenvironmentasanactivepartnerinshapingsystems, adaptivity on all scales (learning, development, evolution) and the amalga- tion of an internal and external world in brain-like intelligence rate high among them. Each of us is rooted in a certain community which we have to serve with the results of our research. Looking beyond our ?elds and working at the interfaces between established areas of research requires e?ort and an active process.

Book excerpt: In a culture where teenagers are growing up inundated with images, experiences, and media that moves and changes at the speed of light, it's no wonder many of them learn better when they're doing something-not only listening to someone talk to them. So rather than stand up front and only use words to teach about Jesus calling the disciples to be 'fishers of men,o why not provide an experience that incorporates the idea of fishing? Using simple things like an inflatable boat and goldfish crackers can turn the 'old storyo into something new that your students think of every time they snack on a goldfish cracker or see a boat. It turns the lesson into an experience. Sacred Space provides dozens of ideas to help students engage in scripture and apply the lesson to their own lives. Whether you're looking to teach a biblical theme, the life of Christ, or a gospel passage, or even when celebrating holidays, you'll find step-by-step instructions to create the space and experience necessary to draw your students into the story. Through art, listening, writing, and multi-sensory prayer stations, your students will experience God's Word in a whole new way. This is more than a toolbox for your ministry-it's a holistic way to approach teaching and communicating God's Word. Authors Dan Kimball and Lilly Lewin bring their years of experience developing these kinds of experiences in youth group settings and churches. In addition to worship experiences on the life of Christ, you'll find ideas for teaching on: The life of David Women of the Bible The Sermon on the Mount Justice The Gospel of Luke Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter And more Use these ideas in your typical gathering to enhance the teaching and musical worship, or develop these experiences into a special event, or a new, unique service without singing or teaching. Inside you'll find everything you need (except the actual supplies!) to create experiences that can transform the way your students encounter God, and help them engage in and learn from the Bible in more meaningful ways.

Book Sensory Friendly Water Features in Autism Friendly School Design

Download or read book Sensory Friendly Water Features in Autism Friendly School Design written by Muskan Afzal and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2024-07-29 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2024 in the subject Art - Architecture / History of Construction, The University of Kashmir (School of Architecture Kashmir), course: B.Arch, language: English, abstract: As the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders continues to rise, there is a growing recognition of the importance of creating educational spaces that foster inclusivity and support the diverse learning styles of autistic students. Traditional school settings often struggle to provide the tailored support required for the diverse learning styles and sensitivities of autistic students. The varied sensory demands of people, especially those who are autistic, have been more widely acknowledged in educational settings in recent years. To improve the educational experience and general well-being of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), this study investigates the incorporation of sensory-friendly water features into the architecture of autism-friendly schools. Since water features are known to have therapeutic and relaxing effects, they may be advantageous for autistic students in educational environments. This study offers insights into the possible effects of sensory-friendly water elements on the learning environment for autistic students.

Book A Generator of Sensory Architectures

Download or read book A Generator of Sensory Architectures written by Liang Liu (M. Arch) and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As we have said, the majority of people consider architecture and space as an essentially visual experience. Architecture: these are buildings - and space is the emptiness contained within its walls. It is precisely where the misunderstanding resides, because space is not emptiness but rather an environment for life contained within the walls, an environment that is stimulating to the senses. It is obviously light and shadow, proportion and color, perspective and decoration, but also sounds that reverberate, surfaces that our feet walk upon, textures that we touch, temperatures that determine our degree of comfort and smells that surround and seduce us. All these things together multiply one another into an ensemble that we perceive as a whole surrounding." Sense of Smell Marc Crunelle. Why is it that our visual sense is so emphasized rather than the collaboration of all senses? For the convenience of visual information dissemination, we mostly perceive the outside world by seeing. And it is no doubt that the visual sense has the priority among rest of our senses. In terms of architecture, we always rely on our eyes when we are designing or experiencing architectural spaces. It is so convenient and fast to draw sketch, build Rhino model, and making renderings. But, at the same time, it's reducing the fact that architecture is such a three-dimension art should be experienced and created by the multi-sensory of our bodies. And somehow, the priority of visual sense is becoming the limitation for us to understand and pursue architecture in a broader way. Our conventional design process places emphasis on drawings and ocular representation, subverting our capacity to engage the other senses in the design process. It proposes to rouse the understanding of multi-sensory architectural design process and experience. So, in a word, by doing this thesis, I'm making the effort on challenging our ocular way to read architectures. It's challenging our conventional design methodology. And it's also challenging our existing architectural representations.
