Book Creating Sales with Stock Outs

Download or read book Creating Sales with Stock Outs written by Laurens Debo and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stock-outs convey information about the propensity of other consumers to purchase a product and this can increase the willingness of marginally interested consumers to buy. But in order to leverage stock-outs, firms must be able to capture the extra demand. We show how asymmetric inventory allocations to ex ante identical retailers may increase the expected satisfied demand compared to symmetric inventory allocations; when one retailer stocks out, the other retailer faces increased demand, not only due to overflow demand, but also due to an increase in the residual demand triggered by the stock-out information. In short, stock- outs can trigger herding behavior. Taking consumer reactions to stock-outs into account may lead to higher inventory investment (to capture the `herd') and asymmetric inventory allocation (one retailer is `sacrificed' to trigger the herd) for high margin products with a low prior on the quality (i.e. `brand perception'). In other cases, accounting for consumer reactions to stock-outs can lead to lower investment in inventory.

Book Leveraging Quality Information in Stock Outs

Download or read book Leveraging Quality Information in Stock Outs written by Laurens Debo and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study the informational role stock-outs may play when consumers have heterogeneous information about the quality of a firm's product. Typically, in a newsvendor world, matching uncertain demand with inventory leads inevitably to stock-outs. When, in addition, consumers are heterogeneously informed about the quality of the firm's product, stock-outs caused early in the season by savvy consumers may be an indication of high quality for the less savvy consumers later in the season. The firm can leverage their increased willingness to pay after a stock-out via increased prices. As a consequence, in the presence of quality uncertainty, a firm may want to manipulate inventory early in the season to create stock-outs in order to take advantage of increased willingness to pay later in the season. In our model, stock-outs can thus be caused either by the firm's inventory manipulations, or by market uncertainty. We find conditions under which stock-outs are an indication of high quality. Our model provides an explanation for frequently reported stock-outs of consumer electronic products or toys, whose potential markets are characterized by significant market uncertainty, but, also, whose quality may not be fully known by all consumers in the market. Compared to the case in which consumers do not observe stock-out information, we find that the firm rationally underinvests in inventory, which causes backorder costs early in the season that are leveraged later in the season via increased sales revenues. Interestingly, we find that the difference in price after a stock-out versus after no stock-out, and the equilibrium stock-out probability, can either increase or decrease with more-savvy early-season consumers.

Book Visualizing Marketing

Download or read book Visualizing Marketing written by S. Umit Kucuk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-20 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on marketing graphics, figures, and visual artifacts discussed in marketing theory in order to explain and discuss the marketing concepts visually and open a door to future predictions of the evolution of such marketing concepts. Marketing concepts are, by nature, abstract and there is a need for approaches that provide a clear picture of such concepts and concrete and hands-on knowledge tools to students, scholars, and practitioners. Furthermore, the recent rising importance and popularity of marketing metrics make visualization of such important marketing phenomena possible. Visualizing or concretizing of marketing data is more important than ever as the usage and presentation of such enormous amounts of data requires visual representation. Thus, the book provides collection of such marketing visualization examples that can help marketing scholars and students to make sense of marketing concepts and their data, so that they can develop clearer and winning marketing strategies.

Book Product Promotion Effectiveness

Download or read book Product Promotion Effectiveness written by Alankrita Nigam and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unpredictable demand pattern during promotions leads to lost sales incurred due to frequent stock-outs, affecting the revenue and the brand of both the manufacturer and the retailer. The research focuses on finding out the root-causes of stock-outs in retail stores. It uses the audit response data that informs us of various states for zero on-shelf availability. These responses are used to create a fault-tree diagram that shows how different states could be reached. The root-causes mentioned in the fault-tree diagram are classified as either qualitative or quantitative root-causes. The credibility of quantitative root causes was established through regression analysis while store visits and interviews of different players of the supply chain helped to reason out the qualitative root-causes. Quantitative factors such as replenishment frequency, store sales volume and forecast accuracy seem to indicate a good correlation with stock-outs during promotions.

Thanks to an emerging technology construct—the Internet-based mega-portal—companies can now connect instantaneously with suppliers, distributors, manufacturers, customers, and alliance partners around the world. Online access to up-to-the-minute information enables companies to improve communication and project management across the entire supply chain, promote collaboration across departments, and enhance customer service and financial operations. Drawing from extensive primary research, this book presents detailed examples of how organizations as diverse as Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Dell, and the U.S. Department of Defense are creating information and communication hubs online and reaping the rewards. The authors explain the basic technical and organizational infrastructure necessary for launching a mega-portal and how its successful management can have profound impact on every area and function of the extended enterprise—from strategy to logistics, product development to customer service.
