Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary worship music shapes the way evangelical Christians understand worship itself. Author Monique M. Ingalls argues that participatory worship music performances have brought into being new religious social constellations, or "modes of congregating". Through exploration of five of these modes--concert, conference, church, public, and networked congregations--Singing the Congregation reinvigorates the analytic categories of "congregation" and "congregational music." Drawing from theoretical models in ethnomusicology and congregational studies, Singing the Congregation reconceives the congregation as a fluid, contingent social constellation that is actively performed into being through communal practice--in this case, the musically-structured participatory activity known as "worship." "Congregational music-making" is thereby recast as a practice capable of weaving together a religious community both inside and outside local institutional churches. Congregational music-making is not only a means of expressing local concerns and constituting the local religious community; it is also a powerful way to identify with far-flung individuals, institutions, and networks that comprise this global religious community. The interactions among the congregations reveal widespread conflicts over religious authority, carrying far-ranging implications for how evangelicals position themselves relative to other groups in North America and beyond.

  • Pages : 154 pages

Download or read book Flow written by Lester Ruth and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there a way to do the prescribed or suggested orders of worship from denominational worship resources—such as the United Methodist Book of Worship, Evangelical Lutheran Book of Worship, the Book of Common Worship of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), or the Book of Common Prayer—in a way that feels legitimately and authentically contemporary? This practical, how-to book will help churches plan and implement passionate and invigorating worship. Step by step, author Lester Ruth and contributors Zachary Barnes, Andrew Eastes, Jonathan Ottaway, Adam Perez, Glenn Stallsmith and Deborah Wong break down the process of re-thinking what the official or recommended order of worship is truly suggesting, so pastors and worship leaders can plan and lead a service of Word and Table that feels genuinely relevant and attuned to the congregation’s culture. With this goal, Flow casts a new, but classic, understanding of traditional worship as well as spurs a reconsideration of how contemporary worship can be done by honoring the traditions of denominational congregations.

Book excerpt: “Worship is a central feature of Christian communities. In the twenty-first century, expressions of worship take on many different characteristics. One style of worship that churches around the world offer, with increasing regularity, is Contemporary Worship. . . . The main question this project aimed to address was, how do we create Contemporary Worship services in the United Methodist Church that are conducive for church growth but do not sacrifice the essence of what makes us United Methodist. The author of this project offers interventions at Dauphin Way United Methodist Church in Mobile, Alabama, to develop a process for creating Contemporary Worship that other United Methodist Churches can replicate. This project focused on creating worship that is theologically sound, liturgically mindful, and culturally relevant. . . . ” -- Leaf [2].

Book Contemporary Worship Music and Everyday Musical Lives

Download or read book Contemporary Worship Music and Everyday Musical Lives written by Mark Porter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whilst Contemporary Worship Music arose out of a desire to relate the music of the church to the music of everyday life, this function can quickly be called into question by the diversity of musical lives present in contemporary society. Mark Porter examines the relationship between individuals’ musical lives away from a Contemporary Worship Music environment and their diverse experiences of music within it, presenting important insights into the complex and sometimes contradictory relationships between congregants’ musical lives within and outside of religious worship. Through detailed ethnographic investigation Porter challenges common evangelical ideals of musical neutrality, suggesting the importance of considering musical tastes and preferences through an ethical lens. He employs cosmopolitanism as an interpretative framework for understanding the dynamics of diverse musical communities, positioning it as a stronger alternative to common assimilationist and multiculturalist models.

Book excerpt: At Worship’s Core is a carefully examined investigation of the attitudes and behaviors that welcome the presence of the Lord. Leading worship appears easy, but its effectiveness is wrapped in nuance and complexity over time. Many believe worship is exclusively a musical proposition. And while there is a propensity for worship in church to involve singing, author Dr. Tom McDonald proposes that worship is not about the voice but the heart. “This significant work by worship leader, professor, and author Dr. Tom McDonald immediately captured my attention! The title itself, At Worship’s Core, stirred my heart, and I was drawn into the riches of its contents” – Glenn C. Burris Jr., president, The Foursquare Church “Dr. Tom McDonald has succeeded in his attempt to reveal what is and how a worship leader should be. His passion to raise a new generation of worship leaders can be seen in this book.” – Daniel Kizhakkevila, chief pastor of Full Gospel Churches in India and president of Voice of Gospel Ministries International “On the first day of Hebrew school in medieval Europe, children would sometimes undergo the ritual of kissing honey from the Torah. Sometimes, the honey would be kissed off a slate with the letters of the Hebrew alphabet. That’s twenty-two kisses. Tom McDonald has written not a five-star book, but a twenty-two-kiss book. The sweet spirit of worship fills every page and chapter. The word we translate as “worship” literally means “to kiss toward,” and this book is a textbook on how worship can be a holy kiss back toward the God who kissed us into life and keeps us alive, kiss by kiss.” – Leonard Sweet, author of The Bad Habits of Jesus, professor, and founder of www.preachthestory.com

Book Christian Congregational Music

Download or read book Christian Congregational Music written by Monique Ingalls and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian Congregational Music explores the role of congregational music in Christian religious experience, examining how musicians and worshippers perform, identify with and experience belief through musical praxis. Contributors from a broad range of fields, including music studies, theology, literature, and cultural anthropology, present interdisciplinary perspectives on a variety of congregational musical styles - from African American gospel music, to evangelical praise and worship music, to Mennonite hymnody - within contemporary Europe and North America. In addressing the themes of performance, identity and experience, the volume explores several topics of interest to a broader humanities and social sciences readership, including the influence of globalization and mass mediation on congregational music style and performance; the use of congregational music to shape multifaceted identities; the role of mass mediated congregational music in shaping transnational communities; and the function of music in embodying and imparting religious belief and knowledge. In demonstrating the complex relationship between ’traditional’ and ’contemporary’ sounds and local and global identifications within the practice of congregational music, the plurality of approaches represented in this book, as well as the range of musical repertoires explored, aims to serve as a model for future congregational music scholarship.
