Book The Complexity and Progression of Black Representation in Film and Television

Download or read book The Complexity and Progression of Black Representation in Film and Television written by David L. Moody and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-06-02 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Complexity and Progression of Black Representation in Film and Television examines the intricacies of race, representation, Black masculinity, sexuality, class, and color in American cinema and television. Black images on the silver screen date back to the silent film era, yet these films and television programs presented disturbing images of African American culture, and regrettably, many early films and small screen programs portrayed Black characters in demeaning and stereotypical roles. In order to fully analyze the roles of Black actors and actresses in film and television, Moody addresses the following issues: the historical significance of the term “race films”; female Black identities and constructs; queerness and Black masculinity; Black male identities; and Black buffoonery in film and television.

Book Living as God s Holy People

Download or read book Living as God s Holy People written by Kent Brower and published by Authentic Media Inc. This book was released on 2014-08-08 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this readable and enlightening book (based on his 2008 Didsbury Lectures) Kent Brower opens up Paul's theology of holy-living-as-community in the power of the Spirit. At the heart of Paul's practical theology is God's call of Israel to be holy as God is holy. But his conviction is that the call to be God's holy people now encompasses all, Jews and Gentiles, who follow Jesus the Messiah. This new community of God is to embody the holiness of God wherever they live just as Israel was to embody it. This is a central theological concern in all of Paul's epistles. His ethics are always theological ethics; his theology is always practical theology. 'Abreast of other scholarly studies, and written in a very accessible style, this engaging book makes a contribution in inverse relation to its modest size.' Larry Hurtado, Professor of New Testament Language, Literature and Theology, University of Edinburgh

His wife has left him, his father is sinking into dementia, and Marcos tries not to think too hard about how he makes a living. After all, it happened so quickly. First, it was reported that an infectious virus has made all animal meat poisonous to humans. Then governments initiated the “Transition.” Now, eating human meat—“special meat”—is legal. Marcos tries to stick to numbers, consignments, processing. Then one day he’s given a gift: a live specimen of the finest quality. Though he’s aware that any form of personal contact is forbidden on pain of death, little by little he starts to treat her like a human being. And soon, he becomes tortured by what has been lost—and what might still be saved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many Christians who are feeling the anguish of being torn between two worlds. They have love for God in their hearts and a desire to live out their faith; however, they find themselves yielding to carnal pleasures. Every day they war in the trenches and hurt behind the scenes. This is a real challenge within the church, and many are at a crossroad in their spiritual walk. They are asking themselves, "Do I continue with the masquerade of church as usual, or do I take a hard look at my compromises?" The objective of Torn between Two Worlds is to help hurting Christians move toward a committed, liberated, and dedicated relationship with God. However, this can only be accomplished if there is a willingness to courageously face their compromises. Every Christian has their share of battles with the flesh, and for those who have been restored, they know firsthand the agony that comes behind negotiating their faith. Therefore, we need Christians who are willing to be open and transparent, in hopes of reaching out to those who are trapped by the serpent's devices. The book engages, encourages, and exhorts its readers to consider the vast difference between the kingdom of God and the carnal world. It stresses the importance of a devotional life with God in order to combat self-centered desires.

Book Let Laodicea Now See

Download or read book Let Laodicea Now See written by John Ingraham B.Th. and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2021-01-13 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An opinionated people, a shamefully naked church, an arrogant prideful people, wretched and despicable in behavior and above all, a spiritually blind church”. Regrettably, this is how Revelation chapter 3 describes the seventh church, Laodicea. This book is a highly recommended exegetical commentary on the seventh named church spoken about in the book of Revelation. It identifies many of the parallels between the historical church and the church today. The book focuses primarily on the apparent blindness of some facets of the church that can be evidently confirmed in the interpretation of end-time prophecy. With earnest prayer and fasting, Bishop John Ingraham has devoted himself to a meticulous study of eschatological events for over twenty years. Primarily he believes, interpretation of prophecy is by divine revelation from the Spirit of God and by proper exegetical analysis of scripture. Let Laodicea now see examines several popular teachings on end-time events in the light of scripture. I pray that after this book would have been read, eyes will have been anointed with the eye salve of truth’ the word of God, and Laodicea will now see!

Book Dante s Divine Comedy in Early Renaissance England

Download or read book Dante s Divine Comedy in Early Renaissance England written by Jonathan Hughes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-24 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dante's Divine Comedy in Early Renaissance England compares the intellectual, emotional, and religious world of Dante in 13th-century Florence with that of a group of English intellectuals gathered around Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, uncle of the King, Henry VI. Here, Jonathan Hughes establishes that there was a Renaissance in 15th-century England, encouraged by the discovery and translations of works of Greek philosophers and developments in science and medicine; and that vernacular writers in Gloucester's circle, such as John Lydgate and Robert Hoccleve, were of fundamental importance in exploring the meaning of the self and man's relationship with the natural world and the classical past. However, the appearance in 15th-century England of Dante's 'Commedia', the most popular work of the Middle Ages, served to remind writers and readers of the cost of intellectual enquiry: the loss of faith in a harmonious and beautiful world; the redemptive power of the love of a woman; and the tangible presence of an afterlife. Engagingly written and meticulously researched, this innovative study shines a new perspective on Dante scholarship as well as offering a unique anaylsis of intellectual thought and culture in 15th-century England.

In this thought-provoking book, the author delves into the depths of these challenging moments, offering invaluable insights and perspectives that lead readers toward a profound understanding of God's unwavering love and the transformative power of trials. Through the metaphor of a tunnel—a symbol of the arduous journey through perceived barriers and obstacles—the author guides readers on a transformative path of self-discovery, resilience, and spiritual growth. This metaphor encompasses the myriad difficulties that God's children encounter in a fallen world governed by the grasp of darkness. The tunnel represents the test of faith, an essential stage in every believer's journey towards fulfilling their divine purpose and manifesting God's promises in their lives. "The Light After the Tunnel" emphasizes the importance of preparation, endurance, and spiritual maturity in fulfilling one's purpose and avoiding disappointment. Drawing parallels to the rigorous testing process undergone by manufacturers to ensure the durability and authenticity of their products, the author illustrates how God allows trials, hardships, and pain to shape and refine individuals, preparing them for the responsibilities and blessings tied to His promises. While traversing the tunnel is an uncomfortable and challenging experience, the author highlights its significance as a pivotal time for believers to prove their spiritual citizenship in the kingdom of God. By showcasing the experiences of biblical champions and heroes of faith, as well as great ministers of the gospel, the book establishes the tunnel as a rite of passage for those seeking to do extraordinary work in their calling, whether in their careers, businesses, or ministries. The message of "The Light After the Tunnel" resounds with the assurance that challenging situations are not an indication of failure or abandonment by God, but rather a testament to one's capability to overcome them. Readers are encouraged to trust in God's unwavering faithfulness and His perfect understanding of the precise manner in which His promises will be fulfilled. Through scriptural wisdom and profound insights, the book reminds us that God's ways transcend human comprehension, and His thoughts surpass our own. In this inspiring and spiritually enriching book, readers will find solace, guidance, and encouragement to navigate life's storms with unwavering faith and hope. By embracing the tunnel experiences, readers will discover the transformative power within themselves, enabling them to emerge on the other side with newfound strength, character, and a deeper connection to God. "The Light After the Tunnel" is a beacon of light and wisdom, illuminating the path toward a brighter future filled with divine blessings and a deeper understanding of God's unconditional love. It is a must-read for those seeking resilience, spiritual growth, and the realization of their purpose amidst the challenges of life.
