Book Alligator Bayou

Download or read book Alligator Bayou written by Donna Jo Napoli and published by Wendy Lamb Books. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unforgettable novel, based on a true story, about racism against Italian Americans in the South in 1899. Fourteen-year-old Calogero, his uncles, and his cousins are six Sicilians living in the small town of Tallulah, Louisiana, miles from any of their countrymen. They grow vegetables and sell them at their stand and in their grocery store. Some people welcome the immigrants; most do not. Calogero's family is caught in the middle of tensions between the black and white communities. As Calogero struggles to adapt to Tallulah, he is startled and thrilled by the danger of midnight gator hunts in the bayou and by his powerful feelings for Patricia, a sharp-witted, sweet-natured black girl. Meanwhile, every day, and every misunderstanding between the white community and the Sicilians, bring Calogero and his family closer to a terrifying, violent confrontation. In this affecting and unforgettable novel, Donna Jo Napoli's inspired research and spare, beautiful language take the classic immigrant story to new levels of emotion and searing truth. Alligator Bayou tells a story that all Americans should know.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louisiana is our most exotic state. It is religious and roguish, a place populated by Cajuns, Creoles, Rednecks, and Bible-thumpers. It is a state that loves good food, good music, and good times. Laissez les bons temps rouler -- let the good times roll -- is the unofficial motto. Louisiana is also excessively corrupt. In the 1990s, it plunged headlong into legalized gambling, authorizing more games of chance than any other state. Leading the charge was Governor Edwin Edwards, who for years had flaunted his fondness for cold cash and high-stakes gambling, and who had used his razor-sharp mind and catlike reflexes to stay one step ahead of the law. Gambling, Edwin Edwards, and Louisiana's political culture would prove to be a combustible mix. Bad Bet on the Bayou tells the story of what happened when the most corrupt industry came to our most corrupt state. It is a sweeping morality tale about commerce, politics, and what happens when the law catches up to our most basic human desires and frailties.

Download or read book Murder in the Bayou written by Ethan Brown and published by Scribner. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Bestseller & the Basis for the Hit Showtime Docuseries Murder in the Bayou is a New York Times bestselling chronicle of a high-stakes investigation into the murders of eight women in a troubled Southern parish that is “part murder case, part corruption exposé, and part Louisiana noir” (New York magazine). Between 2005 and 2009, the bodies of eight women were discovered in Jennings, Louisiana, a bayou town of 10,000 in the Jefferson Davis parish. The women came to be known as the Jeff Davis 8, and local law enforcement officials were quick to pursue a serial killer theory, stirring a wave of panic across Jennings’ class-divided neighborhoods. The Jeff Davis 8 had been among society’s most vulnerable—impoverished, abused, and mired with mental illness. They engaged in sex work as a means of survival. And their underworld activity frequently occurred at a decrepit motel called the Boudreaux Inn. As the cases went unsolved, the community began to look inward. Rumors of police corruption and evidence tampering, of collusion between street and shield, cast the serial killer theory into doubt. But what was really going on in the humid rooms of the Boudreaux Inn? Why were crimes going unsolved and police officers being indicted? What had the eight women known? And could anything be done do stop the bloodshed? Mixing muckraking research and immersive journalism over the course of a five-year investigation, Ethan Brown reviewed thousands of pages of previously unseen homicide files to posit what happened during each woman’s final hours delivering a true crime tale that is “mesmerizing” (Rolling Stone) and “explosive” (Huffington Post). “Brown is a man on a mission...he gives the victims more respectful attention than they probably got in real life” (The New York Times). “A must-read for true-crime fans” (Publishers Weekly, starred review), with a new afterword, Murder in the Bayou is the story of an American town buckling under the dark forces of poverty, race, and class division—and a lightning rod for justice for the daughters it lost.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When most people think of Cajun cooking, they think of blackened redfish or, maybe, gumbo. When Terri Pischoff Wuerthner thinks of Cajun cooking, she thinks about Great-Grandfather Theodore's picnics on Lake Carenton, children gathering crawfish fresh from the bayou for supper, and Grandma Olympe's fricassee of beef, because Terri Pischoff Wuerthner is descended from an old Cajun family. Through a seamless blend of storytelling and recipes to live by, Wuerthner's In a Cajun Kitchen will remind people of the true flavors of Cajun cooking. When her ancestors settled in Louisiana around 1760, her family grew into a memorable clan that understood the pleasures of the table and the bounty of the Louisiana forests, fields, and waters. Wuerthner spices her gumbo with memories of Cajun community dances, wild-duck hunts, and parties at the family farm. From the Civil War to today, Wuerthner brings her California-born Cajun family together to cook and share jambalaya, crawfish étoufée, shrimp boil, and more, while they cook, laugh, eat, and carry on the legacy of Louis Noel Labauve, one of the first French settlers in Acadia in the 1600s. Along with the memories, In a Cajun Kitchen presents readers with a treasure trove of authentic Cajun recipes: roasted pork mufaletta sandwiches, creamy crab casserole, breakfast cornbread with sausage and apples, gumbo, shrimp fritters, black-eyed pea and andouille bake, coconut pralines, pecan pie, and much more. In a Cajun Kitchen is a great work of culinary history, destined to be an American cookbook classic that home cooks will cherish.

Book excerpt: The Cajun is an action-romance that is a little Crocodile Dundee and a little Rambo. Logline: With a million dollar reward on her head, Kelli Parsons hides in the treacherous Atchafalaya Swamp where living or dying depends on one man--the Cajun!Synopsis:Kelli Parsons, a beautiful tough writer, has written a series of articles about the religious practices of the Muslims. Now a fatwa or contract for her death, along with it a million dollar reward has forced her to run from the terrorists. While in protective custody of the FBIs lead agent Richard Staley, who is willing to give her up for part of the reward, they are ambushed on the 20-mile bridge crossing Louisiana’s, Atchafalaya Swamp. In a desperate escape attempt, Kelli jumps into the swamps where the swamp wise and mysterious Cajun, Ballew Dragun, rescues her.The terrorists led by the cold-blooded killer, Kaja Aboujawadeh, pursue her into the swamps with seven of his men. The Cajun catches them all and later releases them with the promise of death if they return. But Kaja is not to be denied and returns with 24 men, including two of the best in the world, Mustafa and Kidane. None of the men have ever tasted defeat. Their force captures Kelli along with two of Ballew's friends, Happy Jak the rotund and jolly bar owner and Belle Rose the old, tobacco chewing, voodoo chanting, woman of the swamps they call "Swamp Witch."While trying to rescue his friends Ballew is tortured and almost killed but manages to escape with Kelli. After he rescues his friends, he returns to the terrorist to exact his Cajun revenge. Using the swamp and all of her secrets, Ballew follows and kills the terrorists one by one, but not without the help of Kelli who saves his life. The Franchise:The Cajun would be a little Indiana Jones with a mix of Lethal Weapon. A buddy movie where one of the characters is a strong female lead. The stories will deal with current news stories and events that will hold the viewer attention and interest. I have a completed script (and novel) for "The Cajun. I have started the sequel and have outlines for four more that are listed below. The main character is Ballew Dragon, who is swamp wise and mysterious. Some think his mother is the Swamp Witch. His buddy in the series is Kelli Parsons a beautiful, tough writer who is on the run from terrorists after her scorching articles on the Islamic faith.Returning characters are:Richard Staley - The FBI agent who is willing to give up Kelli for part of the reward, but changes and saves her in the end.Happy Jak Chamblee - He is Ballew's friend and runs a bar in the swamps called; "Happy Jak's." Belle Rose - the old, tobacco chewing, voodoo chanting, woman of the swamps they call "the Swamp Witch." The Cajun is a natural to lead into an adventure cartoon for kids dealing with all of the animals in the swamp. The Cajun could also make for a very interesting video game. The main character is part Crocodile Dundee and part Rambo (First Blood). This is perfect for a series of movies. I have three sequels ready to start. This would make a great graphic novel and even video game. I have also written a novel to the script. There are six sequels I’m working for The Cajun series.HijackedAtchafalayaParadise LostCajun JusticeKidnappedSwamp Rats
