Book excerpt: Crazy Rich Asians is the outrageously funny debut novel about three super-rich, pedigreed Chinese families and the gossip, backbiting, and scheming that occurs when the heir to one of the most massive fortunes in Asia brings home his ABC (American-born Chinese) girlfriend to the wedding of the season. When Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home, long drives to explore the island, and quality time with the man she might one day marry. What she doesn't know is that Nick's family home happens to look like a palace, that she'll ride in more private planes than cars, and that with one of Asia's most eligible bachelors on her arm, Rachel might as well have a target on her back. Initiated into a world of dynastic splendor beyond imagination, Rachel meets Astrid, the It Girl of Singapore society; Eddie, whose family practically lives in the pages of the Hong Kong socialite magazines; and Eleanor, Nick's formidable mother, a woman who has very strong feelings about who her son should--and should not--marry. Uproarious, addictive, and filled with jaw-dropping opulence, Crazy Rich Asians is an insider's look at the Asian JetSet; a perfect depiction of the clash between old money and new money; between Overseas Chinese and Mainland Chinese; and a fabulous novel about what it means to be young, in love, and gloriously, crazily rich.

Book Roger Waters

Download or read book Roger Waters written by Dave Thompson and published by Hal Leonard Corporation. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Book). To some, he is the face behind classic Pink Floyd. To others, he is the temperament behind some of the greatest albums of the rock era. And to others still, he is one of the most original songwriters of a generation that overflows with notable talent. To all, he is an enigma: a rock star who not only eschewed stardom but also spent much of his career railing against it. But to call Roger Waters a mass of contradictions is simply taking the easy way out. He is so much more than that. Roger Waters: The Man Behind the Wall is the first full biography of the author of The Dark Side of the Moon , Wish You Were Here , and, of course, The Wall . It traces his life from war-torn suburbia to the multitude of wars he has fought since then with his bandmates, with his audience, and most of all with himself. Packed with insight and exclusive interviews with friends and associates, Roger Waters: The Man Behind the Wall dismantles the wall brick by brick, revealing the man who built it in all his glory.

Book Pink Floyd in the 1970s

    Book Details:
  • Author : Georg Purvis
  • Publisher : Sonicbond Publishing Ltd
  • Release : 2021-02-09
  • ISBN : 1789521165
  • Pages : 135 pages

Download or read book Pink Floyd in the 1970s written by Georg Purvis and published by Sonicbond Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It may have all started with Syd Barrett, but the persistence and creativity of Roger Waters, Rick Wright, Nick Mason and David Gilmour meant that Pink Floyd went from one of England’s top underground psychedelic bands to one of the biggest rock bands on the planet — all thanks to an album wondering if there really was a dark side of the moon. Pink Floyd in the 1970s: Decades focuses on the band throughout the 1970s — undoubtedly the peak of their success — from the weird brilliance of Atom Heart Mother to the epic, autobiographical storytelling of The Wall. In between, the band achieved tremendous success with Meddle and Dark Side of the Moon, yet struggled to come to terms with their place in the pantheon of rock music on Wish You Were Here and Animals. The decade of Pink Floyd’s greatest successes was dominated by shifting musical trends and a balance in power in the band changing from democratic equality to Waters calling most of the shots. These factors, and the looming spectre of Barrett, their erstwhile founder, inspired some of the greatest albums of all time. The book explores the music, the defining moments and the personality clashes that very nearly destroyed the band. The author: Georg Purvis is the author of Queen: The Complete Works, currently in its third edition. While Queen was his gateway band, he has come to appreciate all kinds of music over the years and considers himself lucky that his first-ever concert, at the age of 10, was on Pink Floyd’s The Division Bell tour at Veteran’s Stadium on June 2, 1994. He has since turned his love of writing about music into a hobby, with several unfinished manuscripts collecting dust on an external hard drive. He lives in Philadelphia with his wife, Meredith, and their two cats, Spencer and William.

Book Sound as Popular Culture

Download or read book Sound as Popular Culture written by Jens Gerrit Papenburg and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2016-03-18 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars consider sound and its concepts, taking as their premise the idea that popular culture can be analyzed in an innovative way through sound. The wide-ranging texts in this book take as their premise the idea that sound is a subject through which popular culture can be analyzed in an innovative way. From an infant's gurgles over a baby monitor to the roar of the crowd in a stadium to the sub-bass frequencies produced by sound systems in the disco era, sound—not necessarily aestheticized as music—is inextricably part of the many domains of popular culture. Expanding the view taken by many scholars of cultural studies, the contributors consider cultural practices concerning sound not merely as semiotic or signifying processes but as material, physical, perceptual, and sensory processes that integrate a multitude of cultural traditions and forms of knowledge. The chapters discuss conceptual issues as well as terminologies and research methods; analyze historical and contemporary case studies of listening in various sound cultures; and consider the ways contemporary practices of sound generation are applied in the diverse fields in which sounds are produced, mastered, distorted, processed, or enhanced. The chapters are not only about sound; they offer a study through sound—echoes from the past, resonances of the present, and the contradictions and discontinuities that suggest the future. Book Magnets and miracles Loneliness and nostalgia in Pink Floyd s lyrics

Download or read book Magnets and miracles Loneliness and nostalgia in Pink Floyd s lyrics written by Jacopo Caneva and published by goWare. This book was released on 2018-04-09 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following 10 songs you should listen to before you die and the books on Tim Burton and Hayao Miyazaki, Jacopo Caneva’s latest work carries out a short, but in-depth study on the concepts of loneliness and nostalgia in Pink Floyd’s lyrics, from The Dark Side of the Moon to The Wall. The young writer unveils the common ground of apparently different lyrics: the memory of Syd Barrett, the genius and first leader of the group, the “crazy diamond” who gave the band the name of Pink Floyd, delivering it to myth, disappearing in anonymity after troublesome years. The book is a tribute to the legendary English rock-band and a celebration of the The Endless River, a new album of previously unreleased songs.

Book Quicklet on The Best Pink Floyd Songs Lyrics and Analysis

Download or read book Quicklet on The Best Pink Floyd Songs Lyrics and Analysis written by Sarah Bruhns and published by Hyperink Inc. This book was released on 2012-07-30 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK Pink Floyd's progressive and psychedelic rock sound, most famously featured on concept albums like The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall, have given them astounding critical and commercial success. When lead songwriter Syd Barrett succumbed to drugs and mental illness and left the band, the subsequent power struggle between artistically controlling frontman Roger Waters and guitarist David Gilmour led to one of the most famous feuds in rock-n-roll history. The band was originally composed of Roger Waters (bass), Nick Mason (drums) and Richard Wright (piano/keyboard), who all met while studying at Regent Street Polytechnic in London. 17-year-old Roger Syd Barrett, a childhood friend of Waters, joined the group in 1964. Barrett named the group Pink Floyd by combining the names of two blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. MEET THE AUTHOR Sarah Bruhns graduated from San Francisco State University with a degree in Creative Writing. She is a long-time volunteer at 826 Valencia, where she designed a comic book creation class, a magical realism workshop, and lessons for the English Language Learners Summer Series. Her favorite activities include hiking around the city, uncovering new eating experiences, and cooking with wine. She can be found at Borderlands Cafe in San Francisco, drinking way too much coffee. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK The Wall is a sprawling rock opera that explores abandonment, conformity, isolation and emotional numbness. The albums lyrics are cyclical as a reflection of inevitability a sentence (Isn't this where ) begins at the very end of the album, and is finished (we came in?) at the very beginning. The story is arranged around a character named Pink, who loses his father in war, is tormented at school, and eventually as a rock star, builds a literal and figurative wall to protect himself from the outside world. During stage shows, the band played behind a gradually constructed wall, and giant inflatable pigs floated above the stadium. The band performed The Wall only 29 times in New York, Los Angeles and London. CHAPTER OUTLINE Quicklet on the Best Pink Floyd Songs: Lyrics and Analysis + About Pink Floyd + We Don't Need No Thought Control + You Have Found the Secret Message + The Wall Was Too High as You Can See + ...and much more The Best Pink Floyd Songs: Lyrics and Analysis
