Book excerpt: Few places in the United States feel the impact of courthouse disasters like the state of Georgia. Over its history, 75 of the state's counties have suffered 109 events resulting in the loss or severe damage of their courthouse or court offices. This book documents those destructive events, including the date, time, circumstance, and impact on records. Each county narrative is supported by historical accounts from witnesses, newspapers, and legal documents. Maps show the geographic extent of major courthouse fires. Record losses are described in general terms, helping researchers understand which events are most likely to affect their work.

A visit with a cousin in Dunbar, West Virginia in 2008 forever altered his purpose in life and he became a genealogist. Thomas invites you to join him on his journey to uncover his paternal ancestors. His search led him to Roberta, Crawford County, Georgia, the place where it all began. He has documented all eight of his paternal great-great grandparents and his research led to the creation of a bi-annual reunion of the descendants of his great-great grandfather Jessie Jordan, Sr. (1817-1915). Utilizing his newfound sleuthing skills, he discovered his connection to one of the most pivotal civil rights events in history.

Book 1864 Census for Re Organizing the Georgia Militia

Download or read book 1864 Census for Re Organizing the Georgia Militia written by and published by Genealogical Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1864 Census for Re-organizing the Georgia Militia is a statewide census of all white males between the ages of 16 and 60 who were not at the time in the service of the Confederate States of America. Based on a law passed by the Georgia Legislature in December 1863 to provide for the protection of women, children, and invalids living at home, it is a list of some 42,000 men--many of them exempt from service--who were able to serve in local militia companies and perform such homefront duties as might be required of them. In accordance with the law, enrollment lists were drawn up by counties and within counties by militia districts. Each one of the 42,000 persons enrolled was listed by his full name, age, occupation, place of birth, and reason (if any) for his exemption from service. Sometime between 1920 and 1940 the Georgia Pension and Record Department typed up copies of these lists. Names on the typed lists, unlike most of the originals, are in alphabetical order, and it is these typed lists which form the basis of this new work by Mrs. Nancy Cornell. Checking the typed lists against the original handwritten records on microfilm in the Georgia Department of Archives & History, Mrs. Cornell was able to add some information and correct certain misspellings. She also points out that no lists were found for the counties of Burke, Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Dooly, Emanuel, Irwin, Johnson, Pulaski, and Wilcox.

Book They Weathered the Storm

Download or read book They Weathered the Storm written by Baldwin Ross Swift and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2003-04-10 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing my ancestry was challenging and painful--yet, exciting. I encountered learning experiences at my every turn, and had to climb over many a brick wall during my research. I must say that my persistent, tireless efforts to achieve my goal proved beneficial and rewarding. This book has been written not only to spark an interest in its reader for family research, but also to document my gratitude for those who struggled and weathered the emotional storms and endured to strengthen and secure our family ties. Unlike the famous writer Alex Haley, I was unable to link my ancestors to the country of Africa. The trace only led me to the state of Georgia. Our ancestors had many shades of color--from ivory to chestnut, dark brown, and ebony. Hair was all ways from kinky to straight to curly. Eyes ranged from blue to grey and brown. And noses as well as ears showed up little all the way to big. There were high cheekbones on some and round faces on others. Some were tall, some short. I attribute their many features to the Caucasian, Creek, Cherokee, Blackfoot Indian, and the African American bloodline. I must note that no legal references were uncovered to verify the location from which our ancestors migrated. Information concerning our surnames--Banks, Walker, Ross, Swift, and Lockett--I leave for the future generation to uncover. I give each of you my blessings, and I assure you your discoveries will be worth the challenge of doing the job. In this book you will witness my research and view my memory. I hope that as you read it you will learn new aspects of yourself.
