Book Practical Approaches to Alcoholism Psychotherapy

Download or read book Practical Approaches to Alcoholism Psychotherapy written by Sheldon Zimberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sodetal attitudes toward alcoholism are characterized by several types of denial, with disastrous personal and sodal consequences. Refusal to admit the extent of alcoholism as a major national health problem leads to a public policy which allocates relatively few resources to research, prevention, treatment, or rehabilitation. On an individual basis, the combination of sodally approved drinking and the stigma assigned to the chronic alcoholic results in individuals blinding themselves to the existence of the problem in family, friend, and self until it has reached such an advanced or obvious degree that denial is no longer possible. There is the third kind of denial, exemplified by therapeutic de spair, which proclaims thatgaps in knowledge of the cause of alco holism are so great and failures to treat alcoholics successfully so dra matic that there is no assurance that efforts will lead to a positive outcome. This denial is perhaps the most troublesome because it re flects an attitude of therapeutic helplessness. It discourages families from seeking help, and it reinfOlces the tendency of physidans and other human-services workers to overlook the presence of alcoholism as they treat its physical, sodal, and economic consequences. Denial frequently surrounds those who treat alcoholics with an aura of hope lessness, which itself is a negative therapeutic force.

  • ISBN : 0802719759
  • Pages : 271 pages

Download or read book Crave written by Cynthia M. Bulik, Ph.D. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: February 2007, a landmark clinical study by researchers at Harvard University was published in Biological Psychiatry and was soon picked up widely by the media. A survey of 3,000 participants found that 2.8 percent of them suffered from binge eating disorder (BED); that women were twice as likely to report binge eating; and that BED occurs across the age span, from children to the elderly. By extrapolating the statistics to the general population, health professionals estimate 5,250,000 American women and 3,000,000 men suffer from binge eating. The same month the study was published Jane Brody revealed in the New York Times that when she was a 23 years old, her food binges were so extreme that "Many mornings I awakened to find partly chewed food still in my mouth...." Cynthia Bulik, director of the UNC Eating Disorders Progam, is a foremost authority on binge eating. BED can affect anyone, and can be caused by brain chemistry, genetic predisposition, psychology, and cultural pressures--but none of those triggers make giving in to food cravings inevitable. Crave helps readers understand why they crave specific foods, recognize their individual triggers, and modify their responses to those triggers. Binge eating disorder is highly treatable; 70% to 80% of patients at the UNC Eating Disorders Program triumph over their binge eating by using techniques to "curb the crave". Through the stories of some of these patients--men and women, young and old--and with the guidance of Bulik, readers will develop a variety of strategies to use in conquering their cravings and establishing healthy eating habits.

Book The End of Craving

  • Author : Mark Schatzker
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2022-11-08
  • ISBN : 1501192485
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book The End of Craving written by Mark Schatzker and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-11-08 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international bestseller from award-winning writer Mark Schatzker that reveals how our dysfunctional relationship with food began—and how science is leading us back to healthier living and eating. For the last fifty years, we have been fighting a losing war on food. We have cut fat, reduced carbs, eliminated sugar, and attempted every conceivable diet only to find that eighty-eight million American adults are prediabetic, more than a hundred million have high blood pressure, and nearly half now qualify as obese. The harder we try to control what we eat, the unhealthier we become. Why? Mark Schatzker has spent his career traveling the world in search of the answer. Now, in The End of Craving, he poses the profound question: What if the key to nutrition and good health lies not in resisting the primal urge to eat but in understanding its purpose? Beginning in the mountains of Europe and the fields of the Old South, Schatzker embarks on a quest to uncover the lost art of eating and living well. Along the way, he visits brain scanning laboratories and hog farms, and encounters cultural oddities and scientific paradoxes—northern Italians eat what may be the world’s most delicious cuisine, yet are among the world’s thinnest people; laborers in southern India possess an inborn wisdom to eat their way from sickness to good health. Schatzker reveals how decades of advancements in food technology have turned the brain’s drive to eat against the body, placing us in an unrelenting state of craving. Only by restoring the relationship between nutrition and the pleasure of eating can we hope to lead longer and happier lives. Combining cutting-edge science and ancient wisdom, The End of Craving is an urgent and radical investigation that “charts a roadmap not just for healthy eating, but for joyous eating, too” (Dan Barber, New York Times bestselling author of The Third Plate).

Book Clinical Case Studies in the Behavioral Treatment of Alcoholism

Download or read book Clinical Case Studies in the Behavioral Treatment of Alcoholism written by William M. Hay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no shortage of books on behavioral research, on behavioral research on alcoholism, or on behavioral research on alcoholism treatment. Most of the authors of chapters in this book have been involved in the writing of these books. The books and their authors have played an important role in the dramatic increase in the influence of behavioral approaches to one of our society's most troubling human problems. There are not many books, though, which detail the longitudinal course of the behavioral therapies, none doing so for behavior therapy with al coholics and problem drinkers. That this book now appears, then, is a first, made more valuable by the fact that the chapter's authors are both research ers and clinicians, willing and able to combine respect for empirical data with clinical sensitivity and compassion, concern, and commitment for their patients. The chapters in this book reveal important commonalities and telling divergencies in technique, strategy, and treatment tactics. Despite a common perspective on etiology and treatment, the authors of the chapters in this book diverge in criteria for deciding on treatment goal, choice of initial intervention target, the specifics of techniques used, and follow-up proce dures. Common to all, though, is an openness to innovation, a pragmatic appreciation of approaches that work, and a sincere respect for the patient and his or her fundamental desire for a healthy, happier, and more produc tive life.
