Book excerpt: Cranleigh has claimed for some time to be the 'largest village' in England. As long ago as the 1920s, travel writers were dismissing it as a village aping the ways of a town. The tensions between those who saw expansion as a good thing and those concerned at the loss of what Cranleigh village meant to the people who already lived here have been evident for at least a century.Yet, in the 18th century, Cranleigh was a village in decline. While life in its agricultural hinterland continued in its own unchanging way, there was no 'squire', no local worthy to lead the social life of the community. As a survey of the village noted in 1724, the chief homes had become merely farmhouses, including Knowle; the Onslows, who owned most of the land in Cranleigh, had long since retired to the great house and park of Clandon. It was not until the mid- 19th century that the moral temper of the village changed, with the arrival of the formidable Rev. J.H. Sapte riding the wave of Victorian rectitude that lasted until the First World War. The reasons why Cranleigh survived to grow into the 'largest village in England', while larger settlements nearby did not, are contained in its history. History can attempt to explain, too, why such a burgeoning settlement should thrive away from the main thoroughfares of Surrey. Much has already been written about the village but its past still remains relatively obscure, although continuing research has led to recent and revealing new discoveries. We think of 'Cranleigh' as a place of Saxon origin, for example, and therefore over a thousand years old, but there is emerging evidence of settlement here during the Iron Age, a thousand years earlier still, and of man's presence thousands of years before that. This readable and extremely informative account offers the reader the latest thinking on the history of Cranleigh and brings together many previously unpublished photographs of the village and its people.

Download or read book The Language of Doctor Who written by Jason Barr and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-05-15 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a richly developed fictional universe, Doctor Who, a wandering survivor of a once-powerful alien civilization, possesses powers beyond human comprehension. He can bend the fabric of time and space with his TARDIS, alter the destiny of worlds, and drive entire species into extinction. The good doctor’s eleven “regenerations” and fifty years’ worth of adventures make him the longest-lived hero in science-fiction television. In The Language of Doctor Who: From Shakespeare to Alien Tongues, Jason Barr and Camille D. G. Mustachio present several essays that use language as an entry point into the character and his universe. Ranging from the original to the rebooted television series—through the adventures of the first eleven Doctors—these essays explore how written and spoken language have been used to define the Doctor’s ever-changing identities, shape his relationships with his many companions, and give him power over his enemies—even the implacable Daleks. Individual essays focus on fairy tales, myths, medical-travel narratives, nursery rhymes, and, of course, Shakespeare. Contributors consider how the Doctor’s companions speak with him through graffiti, how the Doctor himself uses postmodern linguistics to communicate with alien species, and how language both unites and divides fans of classic Who and new Who as they try to converse with each other. Broad in scope, innovative in approach, and informed by a deep affection for the program, TheLanguage of Doctor Whowill appeal to scholars of science fiction, television, and language, as well as to fans looking for a new perspective on their favorite Time Lord.

Just as Lady Dalby is clearly the best person to arrange the match. But how exactly should Penelope go about dazzling a duke? Surely a show of cleavage never hurt. Perhaps a kiss? And a bit of competition might do nicely. To that end, Penelope approaches the Marquis of Iveston requesting that he kindly appear interested in her so that the Duke will take note. When he does, the game begins as all of Society tries to determine who will actually marry Penelope.
